Science Roll No. 1 to 20

Read the given case study and based on it complete the holiday homework according
to the instructions provided:
“Bengaluru's worst water crisis leaves country's IT capital high and dry”
A case study- published in the Times of India on 07/03/2024.
Bengaluru is facing a worsening water crisis, leading to significant shortages in
various areas. According to the reports, 223 of the 236 taluks in Karnataka are
affected by drought, including Mandya and Mysore districts, the sources of
Bengaluru’s water.
As summer intensifies, about 7,082 villages across Karnataka are at risk of witnessing
a drinking water crisis in the coming months.
What are the Reasons Behind Bengaluru's Severe Water Scarcity?
● Reduced Rainfall and Empty Water Reservoirs:
o The city has witnessed insufficient rainfall in the past couple of monsoons. This
has significantly impacted the Cauvery River, a primary source of water for the city.
Lower river levels mean less water for drinking and agriculture.
o Karnataka received a 38% deficit in north-east Monsoon showers from October to
December. The State received a 25% deficit in southwest monsoon rain from June to
September.
o As per information from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre
(KSNDMC), the water levels in Cauvery Basin reservoirs like Harangi, Hemavathi,
and Kabini are at 39% of their total capacity as of 2024
What is the Current State of the Groundwater Crisis in India?
● Lack of Water Availability:
o Despite supporting 17% of the world's population, India possesses only 4% of the
world's freshwater resources, making it challenging to meet the water needs of its vast
populace.
 A report titled “Composite Water Management Index (CWMI)”, published
by NITI Aayog in June 2018, mentioned that India was undergoing the
worst water crisis in its history; that nearly 600 million people were facing
high to extreme water stress; and about 200,000 people were dying every
year due to inadequate access to safe water.
● Lack of Access to Safe Drinking Water:
○ Millions of Indians lack access to safe drinking water and improved
sanitation, leading to a high incidence of waterborne diseases.
○ A few numbers from the World Bank highlight the plight the country is
facing:
■ 163 Million Indians lack access to safe drinking water.
■ 210 Million Indians lack access to improved sanitation.
■ 21% of communicable diseases are linked to unsafe water.
■ 500 children under the age of five die from diarrhea each day in
India.
1. Based on the above case study, make a web chart depicting possible after-
effects of the water crisis in Bengaluru or any other part of the country. (to be
done on an A3 sheet).
2. Based on the following parameters, create a Google Form consisting of 10
questions and get it filled out by at least 30 people.
· Causes of water crisis
· After effects of the water crisis
· The diseases associated with drinking contaminated water
· Importance of water sanitation and hygiene
· Steps that can be taken to prevent such grave conditions in the future.
Note: The questionnaire should be in multiple-choice form
3. Analyse the data collected by you and represent it on a graph, question-wise.
Make a bar graph of the same.
4. Based on your analysis, make a poster mentioning steps to be taken for proper
water sanitation and hygiene, and in turn, promoting sustainability in the true
sense.

to the instructions provided:
Cape Town almost ran out of water. Here’s how it averted the crisis.
Cape Town’s water crisis got so bad last year that there were competitions to see who
could wash their clothes the least. Restaurants and businesses were encouraging
people to use least water. The city was just 90 days away from turning off the taps.
Reducing demand was a key priority. The City of Cape Town worked to get residents
and businesses on board with a host of water-saving initiatives. People were instructed
to shower for no longer than two minutes. A campaign with the slogan “If it’s yellow,
let it mellow” promoted flushing the toilet only when necessary. And the use of
recycled water – so-called greywater – was also pushed.
A year on, the South African city’s parched dams are now over 80 % full Water use
restrictions have been relaxed. And Day Zero – the point at which Cape Town’s
municipal water supply would be shut off – never came to pass
