Photo tutorial “Oak leaf ornament”

Designer: Irina Ferrer Davydova

This oak leaf ornament is knitted flat in garter stitch.

The finished leaf is about 14 cm [5.5 inches] length.

Materials needed:
Yarn (see also recommendations below):
– 5 g [0.18 oz] of your choice of yarn for each leaf;
– knitting needles in size 2.5 mm [US1.5],
– crochet hook,
– tapestry needle.

Yarn recommendations:

The pictured sample leaves were made from:

Novita Joki (100% wool; 50 g [1.76 oz] = 105 m [115 yds]) in multi-green-ochre-petrol
color;
Novita Nordic Wool (100% wool; 50g [1.75 oz] = 115 m [125 yds]) in olive green.
You may use any yarn you like (recommended Double knitting (DK) yarn (equivalent
weight in US - light worsted, Australia - 8 ply)), as long as it is of similar yarn weight
and has a comparable fiber content. Softer yarns are better suited.
Please note the needle size recommendations. The author prefers to use needles one or
one-and-a-half sizes smaller than stated on the ball band, which helps to achieve a dense
fabric.
Using yarn of a different yarn weight than that of the pictured sample leaves is also
perfectly acceptable, but will affect the size of the finished ornament.

Stitch patterns used:

Garter stitch – k all rows

Abbreviations used:
RS – right side row
k – knit
p – purl
k2tog – knit two stitches together (1 decreased, right-leaning)

together through the back loop (1 decreased, left-leaning)
m1 – pick up the loop between the stitch just worked and the next stitch with left hand
needle then knit into the back of it to make a new stitch.
w&t – wrap and turn (see short row video tutorial in the supplement “useful links”)
wst – knit the wrap and stitch together (see “Knit Wrapped Stitch with its Wrap”
tutorial)

Bind off 3 sts.
Break the working yarn, pull through the last sts.

Thread the tapestry needle with the 8 inch cast-on tail. With the help of the tapestry
needle, return this end from the cast-on edge to the base of the leaf (as shown in the
photos).
With RS facing, pick up and knit 2 sts from the selvedge at the base of the leaf (as
shown in the photo).

Using i-cord technique, knit 7 rows (see video tutorial in the supplement “useful links”).

Break the working yarn, pull through the remaining 2 sts and pull taut. Weave in
the ends.
Steam-block the leaf through a piece of moistened fabric.

To create an oak leaf garland, use a crochet hook to thread a decorative string through
the base of every leaf at the stem.
