A rosy hue cast upon the sky as the glorious fiery sun descended
beyond the horizon. It was the day of the National Cooking Competition 2023.
As I entered the kitchen, where the competition would be held, tension lingered
in the air. Everyone was busy preparing the ingredients. Looking at the sea of
people participating in the competition, anxiety clung to me and I could not
shake it off no matter how I tried. I felt as if a storm was brewing within me.
“Settle down everyone! The competition will begin soon.
Remember that you can work in a team or individually, “ the judges announced.
Once the competition kicked off to a start, some of my friends, Peter and Tom,
approached me. “Let’s work together!” they chirped. I agreed, so we began
discussing ideas of what to cook and what were the ingredients needed. The
problem was that my friends and I were not on the same page.
Finally, I lost all my patience. Smoke came out from my ears. I felt
as if a volcano was erupting from within me. “That’s it, LOSERS! Your ideas are
the worst I have ever heard!” I bellowed at Tom and Peter, before going off to
cook myself. I stomped towards another stove and began my work.
The next few minutes were hectic. After it had stopped erupting. I
huffed and puffed as I put in all my hard work and effort to create the recipe and
cook the dish. I was trying my best in order to prevent any errors in the recipe.
“Time’s up!” the judges hollered at the top of their lungs. After tasting all the
dishes, the judges made up their mind. “ And the winners are... Tom and Peter!
What incredible dishes they have made!”
Upon hearing this, my heart skipped a beat. My eyes widened and
my jaws dropped. I froze to the spot the moment I realised that all my hard
work and dedication were in vain. How could this happen? Tom and Peter’s
ideas were horrible! Thoughts swirled in my mind like a relentless storm,
consuming my mind. I longed for an escape, a way to vanish from the spotlight
of embarrassment, afraid that Tom and Peter would make fun of my
foolishness. Not knowing how to react, I stood rooted to the ground like an
alabaster statue.
After the prize ceremony, I caught Tom and Peter from the corner
of my eye. Without hesitation, I rushed forward toward them to apologise for my
harshness. “How… how did both of you win?” I muttered, knotted in confusion.
“The key to our success is teamwork. If someone does something individually,
it will only be made up of one idea. In contrast, if a team works together and
cooperates with teamwork, different ideas are combined, making it better.
Perhaps we should work as a team for the upcoming cooking competition,” Tom
suggested. Realisation crashed upon me like a fifty-pound sledgehammer. I
was then when I realised that the cause of my failure was the absence of
teamwork. I made the decision to work as a team with my friends for the
upcoming competitions.
One month later, another cooking competition was held. Once the
competition started, I joined Tom and Peter to create a dish. Together, we
discussed our ideas and combined them. “Let’s start. We are going to make
Whoppers!” I decided. With teamwork, we prepared the ingredients and began
cooking the dish. We cooperated with each other as we put in our maximum
effort to prepare the Whopper. Finally, time was up. The judges began to taste
everyone’s dishes.
After tasting all the dishes, the judges were ready to announce the
winner. “The winners are...” my heart palpitated against my ribcage, “Tom,
Peter and Austin!” I could not believe my eyes and ears! My friends and I had
won! I strutted with pride and grinned like a Cheshire cat. Tom, Peter and I
sped like a Formula One racing car towards the prize-giver. As we held the
trophy in the air, my heart soared as though it could reach the moon. Once we
settled down, I thanked my friends profusely for their motivation, knowing that I
had finally got the thing I wanted.
