Environmental Management

ISO (International Organization for Standardization)

It is an independent, non-governmental,
international organization that develops standards to
ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of
products, services, and systems.
• ISO has a multi-faceted approach to meeting the
needs of all stakeholders from business, industry,
governmental authorities and nongovernmental
organizations, as well as consumers, in the field of the
environment.
• ISO has developed standards that help organizations
to take a proactive approach to managing
environmental issues: the ISO 14000 family of
environmental management standards which can be
implemented in any type of organization in either
public or private sectors – from companies to
administrations to public utilities.

• ISO develops normative documents to facilitate
the fusion of business and environmental goals
by encouraging the inclusion of environmental
aspects in product design.
• ISO offers a wide-ranging portfolio of
standards for sampling and test methods to deal
with specific environmental challenges.
• It has developed some 570 International
Standards for the monitoring of such aspects as
the quality of air, water and the soil, as well as
noise, radiation, and for controlling the
transport of dangerous goods.
Environmental Management
System (EMS)
• Environmental Management is all about
having effective formalized management
systems in place to control, minimize and
monitor a company’s environmental impact.
As well as doing the right thing by preventing
pollution and caring for the environment
companies will also be minimizing their risk of
prosecution and increasing their green image
to stakeholders and customers alike.

management, is responsible for developing and
maintaining the ISO 14000 family of standards.
What Is ISO 14000
1. It is a set of standards created to help
companies around the world to reduce their
adverse impact on the environment. It’s a
framework for improved and more
environmentally-conscious quality
management systems by organizations large
and small.
2. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is
among the many agencies that had input into
the standards.
3. Adoption of ISO 14000 practices is voluntary.
4. Organizations that adopt ISO 14000 may obtain
certification that proves their compliance with
environmentally friendly practices.

5. ISO 14000 includes standards that cover aspects of

management practices inside facilities, in the
immediate environment around the facilities, and
during the life cycle of the actual product.

6. This includes understanding the impact of the raw

materials used to create the product as well as the
impact of its eventual disposal
Benefits of ISO 14000
• Obtaining ISO 14000 certification can be considered a
sign of a commitment to the environment, which can be
used as a marketing tool for companies. It may also
help companies meet environmental regulations that
are imposed by governments in which they do
business.
• ISO 14000 certification can open the doors to new
business. Some companies prefer to use suppliers that
are ISO 14000–certified suppliers.
• Their customers may also pay more for products that
are environmentally friendly.
• On the cost side, meeting the ISO 14000 standards can
help reduce costs, as it stresses the efficient use of
resources, limiting waste, recycling, and even finding
new uses for previously disposed of byproducts.

an environmental management system that an
organization can use to enhance its
environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015
is intended for use by an organization seeking
to manage its environmental responsibilities in
a systematic manner that contributes to the
environmental pillar of sustainability.
• Consistent with the organization's
environmental policy, the intended outcomes
of an environmental management system
include:
• · enhancement of environmental performance;

• · fulfilment of compliance obligations;

• · achievement of environmental objectives.

• ISO 14001:2015 is applicable to any

organization, regardless of size, type and nature,
and applies to the environmental aspects of its
activities, products and services that the
organization determines it can either control or
influence considering a life cycle perspective.

ISO 14010 – ISO 14015
• ISO 14010 – ISO 14015: Environmental Auditing
and Related Activities
• Environmental audit means a check, assessment,
test or verification of some aspect of environmental
management.
• Environmental audits may examine: compliance,
monitoring programmes, impact predictions,
equipment performance, physical hazards, financial
risks, products and markets, baselines and
benchmarks, management programmes and
structures, planning procedures and legislation
ISO 14020 – ISO 14024
•ISO 14020 – ISO 14024: Environmental
Labeling
•With increasing consumer concern about the
environmental impact of the goods and services
they buy, environmental labelling has emerged
as a key tool for making sustainable purchasing
decisions.
ISO 14031 and ISO 14032:
• ISO 14031 and ISO 14032 - Environmental
Performance Evaluation
• Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE)
provides a robust and repeatable process to compare
past and present environmental performance using
KPIs.
• It helps organizations determine trends, evaluate risk
and identify its strategic objectives and targets.
• EPE can also be used to report and communicate
information on the organization’s environmental
performance to demonstrate its commitment to
improvement.

ISO 14040 – ISO 14043
• ISO 14040 – ISO 14043: Life Cycle Assessment
• Life cycle assessment is best known for
quantitative analysis of environmental aspects of a
product over all its life cycle stages.
• An LCA is a systematic tool that enables the
analysis of environmental loads of a product
throughout its entire life cycle and the potential
impacts of these loads on the environment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42gsNQRptlo
• There are four phases in an LCA; goal and
scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis
(LCI), life cycle impact assessment (LCIA)
and life cycle interpretation
• (ISO 14040, 1997). ISO 14040 shows the
relationship among these four phases as shown
in Figure
ISO 14050
• ISO 14050: Terms and Definitions
• This document defines terms used in
documents in the fields of environmental
management systems and tools in support of
sustainable development.
• These include management systems, auditing
and other types of assessment,
communications, footprinting studies,
greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation to
climate change.
EMS Certification
• Environmental management system
certification basically requires the organisation
to monitor and manage its impact on the
environment. By controlling risks and creating
improvements, not only will the organisation
be protecting the environment but will also
bring bottom line benefits to the performance
of the company.
• here is also the added advantage that the
standard requires the company to be aware of
all the legislative requirements that are
relevant to its operations and therefore the
potential for legal non-compliances, and any
subsequent court costs or fines, is likewise
minimised.
An environmental management systems (EMS)
compliant with ISO 14001:2004 usually consists of
the following elements:

❖ Environmental Policy – The organisation has

established and maintained an environmental
policy manifesting the organisations commitment
to environmental protection.

❖ Planning – The organisation identifies the

environmental aspects of their operation as well as
applicable environmental legislation and then sets
out objectives, targets and programmes to manage
these aspects.
• Implementation & Operation – The organisation
provides the required resources to achieve stated
objectives, ensures that training and awareness is
provided, and measures to communicate on
environmental aspects throughout the organisation are
established. Significant environmental aspects are
addressed through appropriate control measures and
emergency response plans.

• Checking – The organisation monitors and measures

their operations and activities with regards to their
environmental impact. Legal compliance is constantly
monitored and non-conformities are managed in a
systematic manner. Internal audits ensure that the
EMS conforms to the planned arrangements of
environmental management.
• Management Review – Management meetings
are conducted regularly to review the suitability,
adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS.

• Taken together these aspects help the

organisation to continually improve the EMS
and thereby their ability to improve its
environmental performance. It is important to
note that this standard does not set any specific
requirements for environmental performance. It
rather sets out a framework for organisations to
manage their environmental aspects in a
systematic manner.
