TThe indefinite article: 'a' and 'an'
The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity
is not known.
a (before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound)
an (before a singular noun beginning with a vowel sound)
I have an apple
He is a teacher
Dialogue: Paul is in a strange town.
Paul: Where am I? I’m not at home. I’m in a strange town. Where am I? Ah, here’s a
woman. Excuse me, excuse me!
Woman: Yes?
Paul: Can you tell me the way to the bus-station, please?
Woman: The bus-station?
Paul: Yes, I want to catch a bus.
Woman: You can’t catch a bus here.
Paul: I can’t catch a bus here?
Woman: No. There isn’t a bus-station.
Paul: There isn’t a bus-station. Oh dear!... The railway-station!
Woman: Railway-station?
Paul: Yes. Can you tell me the way to the railway-station? I want to catch a train.
Woman: You can’t catch a train here.
Paul: I can’t catch a train here?
Woman: No. There isn’t a railway-station.
Paul: Oh dear! It is a strange town. Where am I? I want to go home.
(Paul continues walking in the strange town)

to post a letter. Here’s somebody. Excuse me, excuse me!
Man: Yes?
Paul: Can you tell me the way to the post-office, please?

Paul: Yes. I want to post a letter.
Man: You can’t post a letter here.
Paul: I can’t post a letter here?
Man: No, there isn’t a post-office....
Paul: Where am I? Where am I? I want to go home.
Wife: Wake up, Paul! Wake up!
Paul: Where am I?
Wife: You’re at home!
Paul: At home?
Wife: Yes, you’ve been asleep!
Paul: Oh, I’ve been dreaming. Thank goodness!
