Task #1: Watch video #1 about soccer positions and formations, then answer these questions:
1). How many players are on the field at once (for one team?)
11
2). How many different formations are shown in this video?
3). Which formation do you like the best? Why?
4-4-2 because it’s helpful for there to be 2 forwards and it’s also easier for the other positions to be
compact since there is an even amount of midfielders and defensive players. No one is left to defend a
player alone or move the ball up alone.
4). Which position interests you the most? Why?
Wing because they are important offensive players and defensive players and they play an important
role on the field.
5). Pick 3 positions on the field, and tell me what their role is.
centerback- prevent striker from scoring
forward- move the ball up the field and score
wing- move up the sides of the field with the striker and cross the ball in
Task #2: Watch video #2 on soccer rules/laws of the game and then answer these questions:
1). If the ball touches your elbow during a game, is that considered a hand ball?
yes
2). How many minutes is a full soccer game, and how long is each half? (note – in high school soccer,
each half will be 5 minutes less than a normal game length)
80 minutes each half is 40 minutes
3). Where on the field can a goalie use their hands?
Inside the penalty area
4). What is the first action of game called/you start the game with a kickoff ? When else does this occur?
Kickoffs also happen after the other team scores .
5). If the ball is mostly outside of the field lines (endline or sideline), but still touching the line a little bit,
is the ball considered in or out?
In
6). Do your best to explain what the offsides rule is.
The receiving player or attacking player can’t be behind the last defender on the opposing team.
7). Can you be offsides on a throw in?
No
8). When is a free-kick awarded?
When there is a foul or hand ball
9). Explain the difference between a direct and indirect kick.
A direct kick is aimed at the goal and doesn’t have to touch a player but an indirect kick has to touch a
player to count.
10). What happens if a foul occurs inside of the penalty box?
Penalty kick
11). Fill in the blank: A throw in occurs when the ball goes over the side line.
12). True or False: one foot can come off the ground during a throw in.
False
13). Use the words “defending” and “attacking” to fill in the blanks appropriately:
For a corner kick to occur, the defending team kicked the ball over the end line. For a
goal kick to occur, the attacking team kicked the ball over the end line.
