From Globetrotter to Gem Setter: My Sparkly Journey
Picture a little girl with a big backpack, always ready for the next adventure. That was me!
My dad's job was like a magic carpet, whisking us off to new places all the time. I tried
delicious foods from all over the world and made acquaintances from every corner of the
globe. Little did I know, all of this moving around was teaching me something very
important: how to be tough and quick on my feet.
Now, fast forward to present. Guess what? I am not only following in my parents' footsteps; I
am forging my own career in the bright world of business!
After finishing school, I became what I call a "number wizard" (which is a fancy way of
saying I became a Chartered Accountant). I got a job with a huge corporation called KPMG.
It was similar to being in a circus, except instead of juggling balls, I was juggling numbers
from 11 different countries! Talk about a mental workout!
One day, I had to lead a large project all by myself. My boss was away, so I had to make
everything perfect. It was terrifying, but I took a deep breath, rolled up my sleeves, and set to
work. I organized my staff, ensured that everyone knew what to do, and kept things going
smoothly. In the end, we finished the task early and did an excellent job. I felt like a
superhero wearing a business outfit!
But office life was not my final destination. Nope! My next great adventure was right at
home, in my mother's jewelry box! Consider this: a box filled with sparkling diamonds and
huge hopes. That's where I went next. I decided to modernize my mother's traditional
diamond business. It was like giving our family's treasure box a cool facelift!
With only my phone and a can-do attitude, I set out to conquer the internet. I made Instagram
my playground and Facebook my stage. I recounted stories about our stunning jewels, which
prompted customers to stop scrolling and start shopping. And boy, it worked! We virtually
doubled our consumer base in just one year!
But this is when the real fun begins. I had a wild idea to combine traditional Indian jewelry
with modern, sleek styles. It was like combining your grandmother's vintage necklace with
something that a pop star would wear. Is there a major risk? You bet! It could have been a
complete flop. But, guess what? People loved it! We sold twice as much jewelry,
demonstrating that combining old and new can be effective.
However, my trip has not always been smooth sailing. A high-profile client once asked me to
fake some data. It was like being in a movie when the villain tries to seduce the hero. I was
terrified, but I knew what was correct. I stayed firm and said no. It turned out that being
honest increased people's faith in us.
Another time, we decided to open a new store in a different city. It was like discovering a
completely new planet! I offered to go check it out. I strolled through crowded markets,
talked to a lot of individuals, and learnt everything about what they preferred to wear. It was
like being a fashion detective!
I've learned so much from all of these adventures. Each difficulty has been like discovering a
hidden gem: sometimes rough, often brilliant, and always valuable.
But my narrative does not end there. I chose to return to school to learn more about business.
I was accepted into a premier school named IIM Shillong. It's just like Hogwarts for business
wizards!
Now, as I sit in my new classroom, surrounded by intelligent individuals from throughout
India, I can't help but reflect on how far I've come. It's been a long journey from that little kid
with a backpack to a successful businesswoman with great goals!
I've learnt that while math skills are crucial, so is creativity. I've realized that taking chances
can lead to incredible results. Most significantly, I've learned that being honest and
compassionate is the most effective approach to succeed.
My adventure has taught me to be brave, think outside the box, and to never stop learning. It
has taught me that the world is full with opportunities if you are willing to look for them.
So here I am, a girl who used to travel the world but is now drifting around the business
world. With my trusty calculator in one hand and a handful of sparkling gems in the other, I'm
prepared for whatever happens next.
What is the next chapter in my bright story? Well, that is still being written. But I'm sure it'll
be filled with fresh adventures, great ideas, and plenty of sparkle!
As I look ahead, I want to help other women start their own enterprises. I want to share what
I've learnt and help others shine brightly. Perhaps one day I'll open a school for young
entrepreneurs or write a book about my experiences in business.
Whatever comes next, one thing is certain: I will approach it with the same spirit of adventure
that the little girl with the enormous rucksack did. Because, ultimately, life is the greatest
adventure of all, and I want to make the most of every twinkling moment
