Stopping by Woods On Snowy Evening

Summary
Name of the poet: Robert Frost
Famous Poems: Desert Place, After Apple Picking

This poem has been written by Robert Frost- An American poet. He raises philosophical issues
regarding Nature and man’s existence in this world. This poem also depicts the reality of life
and death.
Here in this poem the poet presents. himself as a traveller who is bewitched by the mysterious
beauty of snow-covered woods. He says that he knows the owner of the woods but the owner
is not aware of his presence near his woods. Everything is shrouded with snow and silence
prevails the whole atmosphere…
“Silently, like thoughts that
Come and go, the snowflakes
Fall, each one a gem.”
The only sounds one can hear are of light winds and harness bells of the poet’s horse. This
whole scene symbolizes the world of fantasy and imagination which is very attractive for man.
The poet is mesmerized by the beauty of the scene and wants to stay there for long time to stay
there for a long time but his horse feels it strange to stay there for long time without any
farmhouse near in the vicinity. It gives a shake to its harness bells. The poet feels himself in a
fix. The world of imagination is charming and alluring for him. He wants to escape there but he
is also conscious of his responsibilities
“And miles to go before I sleep.”
In the end he decides in favour of a life of cares and responsibilites against the world of
imagination… One must keep a balance between imagination and reality.
One might also assume the promises represent the traveler’s life commitments and sleep is
referring to the final commitment of death. The poet has employed figurative language to
heighten the impact of the poem. His artistic use of symbolism, metaphor, personification and
imagery makes the theme sublime. The journey from this world to the eternal life has been
depicted by the poet very skillfully.

“Death is not the end, but rather the beginning of eternal life.”
