Rado is the Swiss watch brand known for its innovative and award‑winning designs

1917, when three brothers in Lengnau, Switzerland, founded Schlup & Co., a maker of

MOVING ANCHOR
The symbol of Rado’s automatic watches
In its early years the Rado brand name began to be accompanied by a symbol that
resembled a ship’s anchor. Customers soon appeared in watch and jewellery boutiques
asking about “the watch with the moving anchor”. Since 2011, the symbol can be seen
on the dial of every Rado watch powered by an automatic movement. Curiously, there is
some evidence that the symbol was not meant to represent an anchor, but rather a radar
antenna. Whether anchor or antenna, it remains a unique symbol of the brand renowned
for its innovative use of advanced technologies and materials in watchmaking.

enough ; innovation, durability and wearer comfort are just as important.
HIGH‑TECH CERAMIC
In 1986 Rado pioneered the use of high‑tech ceramic. Since then high‑tech ceramic
has played a pivotal role in Rado watches. They are durable and extremely versatile ; in
shiny and matt finishes of various colours shimmering smooth or ornate surfaces can
be created.
PLASMA HIGH‑TECH CERAMIC
Plasma high‑tech ceramic exudes a striking and mysterious metallic brilliance, without
the use of any metal. The plasma carburising process is patented and is a form of mod-
ern alchemy. Gases activated at 20,000°C alter the composition of high‑tech ceramic
without affecting its essential properties. Although only the surface colour of the ceramic
is changed as the warm grey metallic colour emerges from each piece, it will not fade
over time, instead retaining its naturally scratch‑resistant shine for years to come.
HARDMETAL
In 1962, Rado introduced the Rado DiaStar 1 to the watch market, a scratch‑resist-
ant watch at a time when this was far from the norm. The secret of this creation?
Hardmetal. Even today hardmetal remains an important aspect of Rado watches.
Thanks to its exceptional hardness hard­metal is more durable than steel, gold and
platinum and defies the marks of everyday life.
SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL
Sapphire crystal is used in all Rado watches. Convex, facetted or flat it underscores
their dynamic profile and creates a seamless transition from the bracelet and case to
the crystal. Rado’s innovative use of metallisation on the surface of the crystal lends

HIGH‑TECH DIAMOND
