What is Vedic Mathematics
Vedic Mathematics is a collection of Techniques/Sutras to solve
mathematical arithmetics in easy and faster way. It consists of 16 Sutras
(Formulae) and 13 sub-sutras (Sub Formulae) which can be used for
problems involved in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, conics. It
was discovered by Indian mathematician Jagadguru Shri Bharathi
Krishna Tirthaji in the period between A.D. 1911 and 1918 and
published his findings in a Vedic Mathematics Book by Tirthaji Maharaj.
Veda is a Sanskrit word which means ‘Knowledge’. Using regular
mathematical steps, solving problems sometimes are complex and time
consuming. But using Vedic Mathematic’s General Techniques
(applicable to all sets of given data) and Specific Techniques (applicable
to specific sets of given data), numerical calculations can be done very
fast.
What are the benefits of learning Vedic Math?
Vedic Mathematics can definitely solve mathematical numerical
calculations in faster way. Some Vedic Math Scholars mentioned that
Using Vedic Maths tricks you can do calculations 10-15 times faster
than our usual methods. Some of the major benefits of learning Vedic
Maths are :
1. Vedic math enriches and enhances the knowledge and understanding
of the math so that you can learn it in an easy way.
2. Vedic Math is not only helpful for the kids but also for the students
who are preparing for the various competitive exams.
3. This method saves a lot of time as it does not require to remember a
large amount of stuff. Also, it helps in enabling faster calculations,
unlike the other conventional methods.
4. The major focus of Vedic math is on the mental calculations. This will
further ease the learning process of Mathematics like never before.
5. Vedic math also enhances and level up your creativity in the right
direction which further helps in increasing the overall personality.
VEDIC MATH’S ADDITION TECHNIQUE - 1
Let’s say I have to add 35 and 59.
We draw a line between 3 and 5 in 35 and 5 and 9 in 59. We add 3 and
5 first which is 8. Since it is at tens place this 8 is not 8 but 80. Now add
5 + 9 = 14. Now 14 = 10 +4, so we write 4 in the units place and carry
over 1 or 10 to 3+5 or 30 + 50. And it becomes 80 + 10 +4.
3/5
5/9
--------
80
14
--------
94
VEDIC MATH’S ADDITION TECHNIQUE - 2
If we have to add the numbers 45 and 78, we may think of the numbers
one below the other. The total in the first column is 11, and the second
column totals 13. The 1 in the 13 is then combined with the 11 to give
12 and the 3 is tagged on to this: 123. (11+1,3 = 123)
VEDIC MATH’S SUBTRACTION TECHNIQUE - 1
Use the formula all from 9 and the last from 10, to perform instant
subtractions.
For example 1000 – 357 = ? (subtraction from 1000)
We simply take each figure in 357 from 9 and the last figure from 10.
Step 1: 9-3 = 6
Step 2: 9-5 = 4
Step 3: 10-7 = 3
So the answer is 1000 – 357 = 643
VEDIC MATH’S SUBTRACTION TECHNIQUE - 2
Consider an example, 754 – 685 = 069.
We start from unit’s place. Can we subtract 5 from 4 directly? No. We
can’t. So subtract 5 from 10 (=5) and add 4 to it. We get 4 + 5 = 9. So, 9
is the unit’s place of our answer. At the same time, take carry 1 to 10’s
place.
Now, consider 10’s place. Can we subtract 9 (8+1<carry>) from 4
directly? No. We can’t. So subtract 9 from 10 (=1) and add 5 to it. We
get 1 + 5 = 6. This is 10’s place of our answer. At the same time, take
carry 1 to 100’s place.
Now, consider 100’s place. Can we subtract 7 (6+1<carry>) from 7
directly? Yes. We can. So, we get 7 – 7 = 0. So, we get 0 as 100’s place.
Hence, our answer is 069 or simply 69.
