In the bustling street, there is a woman named Mathilde. She was a beautiful and charming
woman; she had all that a woman wished for, but for her, her life is far from glamorous.
Mathilde had been born into a family with no fortune, no connections, and no prospects. Her
dreams of a life filled with wealth, luxury, and social recognition seemed to be distant fantasies.
Mathilde's days were filled with longing as she watched the Parisian elite from afar, yearning for
a life she believed she deserved. She wished to be known, understood, loved, and wed by a man
of wealth and distinction who could grant her the life of luxuriance she so deeply desired.
One fateful day, as Mathilde's despair seemed to reach its peak, an opportunity presented
itself. She was introduced to a young and modest clerk named Monsieur Loisel, who worked
diligently in the Ministry of Education. He was not a man of great wealth or distinction, but he
was kind-hearted, and his love for Mathilde was genuine. Despite her initial hesitation, Mathilde
decided to marry Monsieur Loisel. It was a choice that would forever alter the course of her life.
No longer would she be the lonely, penniless dreamer on the outskirts of society. Instead, she
would have a loving husband and a home to call her own.
As the years passed, Mathilde and Monsieur Loisel made the most of their modest lives
together. They worked hard, scrimped, and saved to make ends meet. Though they lacked the
luxuries Mathilde had once yearned for, they found happiness in each other's company and their
simple lives.
After a year, Mathilde slowly came to the realization that it is not enough to have a loving
and caring husband if their house has a mean wall, ugly chairs, and curtains. She is now slowly
wishing that she had married a wealthy man to fulfill her dreams because her husband cannot
afford to buy them for her. Every day, Mathilde suffers from sadness because of the life that she
has.
One day, her husband came back to their house with an invitation from a prestigious party
at the ministry on the 18th day of January. Instead of being happy like what Monsieur Loisel
expected.
Mathilde said, "What am I going to do with that if I don't have a glamorous dress or even
jewelry?"
Her husband responds, "I can give you 400 francs for your dress; all I want is for you to have
fun, darling." Her wife agrees and buys a dress, but she still feels unhappy because she does not
have jewelry to wear.
Her husband says, "Why don't you try to borrow some jewelry from your friend? Do you
remember Madame Forestier?" Mathilde quickly goes to Madame Forestier's house with his
husband.
When they finally reached her house, Madame Forestier said, "It was nice seeing you both; why
did you decide to come here?”
Mathilde answered, "Good morning, my friend! I'm sorry for asking this, but can I borrow some
of your necklace?” Madame Forestier agrees and lets Mathilde choose jewelry from her box.
Mathilde finally found something that she wants, a superb diamond necklace. Her heart beats
faster as she wears the necklace.
She thanked Madame Forestier for letting her borrow the necklace, and she promised that she
would return it immediately.
At the party, Mathilde was a sensation. She looked stunning in her borrowed diamond
necklace, dancing gracefully and captivating everyone's attention. Men eagerly approached her,
the Minister noticed her, and she reveled in the admiration and attention. It was a night of pure
happiness, fulfilling her dreams and desires.
After the party, her husband immediately gets a taxi because it is getting colder.
They were having a happy conversation, then they are finally got home. When Mathilde touched
her neck, her face was pale and full of fear.
Her husband saw her and asked, "What's with that expression, darling?”
Her wife responds, “What am I going to do now?” and cried.
Her husband finally understood the reason. They immediately find the necklace everywhere, they
came back to the party's venue, but they were disappointed.
After a week, Mathilde decides to come to Madame Forestier's house and tell everything.
She cries immediately as Madame Forestier shows up, she confessed to Madame Forestier,
trembling, promising to replace the missing jewelry.
Madame Forestier said, "Don't worry, stop crying, I'm not mad, it's okay, Mathilde."
Mathilde responds quivering "But I lost it, let me replace the missing necklace, it's all my fault,
all I want is to have a fantastic life like you, I guess greed ate me up, this is what I get for being
greedy, I-I'm so sorry Madame."
Madame Forestier hugged her and said, "Physical materials like jewelry don't matter to me, all
that is matter is our friendship." The two hugged.
After an hour, they said goodbye to each other.
A month later, Mathilde and her husband heard a knock at their door.
It was the taxi driver who drive for them after the party.
He is filled with joy as he handed them the necklace. He said, "It was hard to locate the both of
you because I don't have any gadgets or anything that I can use to contact you, I'm so glad for
finally seeing you!”
The two lovers thanked the taxi driver and asked him to have a coffee.
After an hour, they said their goodbyes.
Mathilde and her husband immediately came to see Madame Forestier.
When they got to her home, Mathilde narrated the entire story to Madame Forestier, who burst
into laughter. She said, "You should keep that necklace because it suited you perfectly! you
looked stunning with that!”
Mathilde hesitated, but later, she accepted the heartfelt gift from Madame and hugged her.
Mathilde slowly realized that the life that she has now is enough; she realized the hard work that
her husband does so that she will have a good life.
The two lovers lived happily without minding what people say about them. They were having a
good life together and promised that they would not leave each other until they died.
