2. ADDENDUM A: FACT SHEET, PROFILE AND ROUTE MAP

FACT SHEET
Niche Tourism
INTRODUCTION TO NICHE TOURISM
Niche tourism is a term covering a range of products, services or interests that focus on a
limited market and meet the needs of a particular audience/market segment. Other terms that
identify similar, small-market segments include alternative tourism and special interest
tourism. Communities with specific niche products are able to establish and position
themselves as niche tourism destinations.

Tourists around the world have become more globalised and more educated. The one-size-
fits-all traditional packaged tourism model no longer satisfies the needs of tourists. Travellers
are looking for real, intimate experiences that include social, cultural and environmental
interactions. They are looking for original, fresh and 'out of the box' experiences.

Niche tourism is a more positive form of tourism than mass tourism and is often associated
with sustainable and responsible tourism. It involves smaller numbers of tourists who leave
less of a carbon footprint. They want a positive impact on the people and the environment, so
they are looking for specialised destinations that practise sustainability. Travel trends are largely
dictated by the younger generation who want to feel, touch and personalise their experiences.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON INSTA TOURISM
Instagram is a free photo and video sharing application (app) on cell phones, tablets and
laptops. Photos and videos can be uploaded on Instagram and shared with friends and
followers. One can also view comments and like the posts shared by friends on Instagram.

Instagram has globally over 1 billion monthly users. According to the latest Instagram statistics,
India ranks the highest with 229,6 million active Instagram users. By November 2022, South
Africa had 6,11 million Instagram users, which is 10,1% of the population.

The Instagramability of a destination is the motivating factor when deciding where to go on

holiday. Almost all travellers in the age group 18 to 22 years record their travels on Instagram.
Instagram users rely on the images and videos that they see on social media platforms to
inform their travel decision-making and use the platforms to discover new places.

Insta tourism is an emerging niche market. It involves the use of the social media platform,
Instagram. It enables organisations and individuals to promote or research travel opportunities.

Many tourists travel to destinations that are Instagrammable. This term refers to destinations,
attractions or activities that are visually appealing and can be photographed and posted on
Instagram.

PROFILE
THE FOUR FRIENDS
South Africa is well-known for its variety of wildlife, natural beauty, cultural diversity,
adventure activities and affordability. The country is therefore considered as an Instagrammable
destination.

Four friends from London in the United Kingdom would like to travel to South Africa to explore
the country's hidden gems and to capture as many Insta moments as possible. The group
members are between the ages of 20 to 23 years old, with an unlimited travel budget. They will
be visiting South Africa for a 10-day holiday and are interested in unique adventures and
extraordinary accommodation in the Eastern Cape. They are all experienced deep-sea divers.

They will fly from Heathrow International Airport in London, have a layover in another European
city and then fly to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. They will take a domestic
connecting flight on the same day to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Gqeberha
(Port Elizabeth). On arrival in Gqeberha, they will hire a 4x4 vehicle for the full duration of their
holiday in the Eastern Cape.
The accommodation and activities they have chosen are in and around Gqeberha, Tsitsikamma
and the Addo Elephant National Park. After their 10-day adventure holiday they will fly from
Gqeberha to Johannesburg and then board an international flight back to London.

Tourists with a British passport can visit South Africa for up to 90 days without a visa, which
makes it a very popular destination for British nationals. Planning for this trip is a life skill
necessary to participate fully in the tourism industry as an informed traveller or employee.

RESOURCE 2: VACCINATIONS
VACCINES ARE RECOMMENDED FOR UK TRAVELLERS VISITING SOUTH AFRICA
When visiting South Africa from the UK, a few precautions should be taken to ensure a safe
stay. Before leaving for South Africa, the group of friends made an appointment at a travel clinic
to discuss their individual vaccination requirements. They had to get vaccinated a month before
they flew to South Africa, as some of the common travel vaccines had to be administered over
the course of a month.
HEPATITIS A
Hepatitis A is a viral infection
transmitted through con-
taminated food and water or
by direct contact with an
infectious person. Recovery
can vary from weeks to
months.
Who is at risk?
Travellers visiting friends and
relatives, long-stay travellers
and those visiting areas of
poor sanitation.
Prevention
All travellers should take care with personal, food and water hygiene.
Hepatitis A vaccination
The hepatitis A vaccine gives long-lasting protection and is recommended for all previously
unvaccinated travellers.
TETANUS
Tetanus is caused by a bacterium that is present in soil and manure and may enter the body
through open wounds, such as a puncture wound, burn or scratch. Tetanus-prone wounds are
described as wounds or burns that need surgery, but where surgery cannot be performed within
24 hours. The tetanus vaccination will give protection against wounds or burns where a
significant amount of tissue has been removed, or puncture-type injuries such as animal bites,
particularly if they have had contact with soil or manure.
Prevention
Travellers should thoroughly clean all wounds and seek appropriate medical attention.
Tetanus vaccination
Travellers should have received the vaccination 8 weeks before they travel.
TYPHOID
Typhoid is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food and water. Having had
typhoid previously may only partially protect against re-infection. Vaccination is recommended
for most travellers, particularly those visiting areas where sanitation and food hygiene are likely
to be poor.
Prevention
All travellers should take care with personal, food and water hygiene.
Typhoid vaccination
Oral and injectable typhoid vaccinations are available.
[Adapted from www.travelhealthpro.org.uk]
OTHER RECOMMENDED VACCINATIONS
Cholera, hepatitis B, rabies, tuberculosis (TB) and the most recent Covid-19 vaccination.
A yellow fever vaccination was not required as they were travelling directly from the UK to
South Africa.

QUESTION 5: MARKETING

RESOURCE 1

THE MARKETING POWER OF INSTAGRAM

We live in an internet era where travellers use online platforms to get recommendations for
places to visit, where to stay and things to do. Social media has transformed how businesses
market themselves to their customers.

Photos are splashed on Instagram after exciting holidays. Other internet users follow these
posts closely to get inspiration for where the next holiday will be. 70% of travellers use their
smartphones to research their travels on social media.

Some travellers know they need a getaway from their normal lives, but do not know where they
want to go or what they want to do. This is the group of want-to-be travellers that go on
platforms like Instagram to find inspiration and ideas from other travellers for the ideal holiday.

Tourists trust other travellers' feedback more than advertisements. They feel that the research
they do on social media platforms is more than sufficient to plan their next holiday.

Businesses respond to customers' compliments and complaints online when they read it on
Instagram. It shows that the business cares for its clients, which is a positive aspect. It also
brings the human factor to the product and the business.

A hashtag (#) is used on social media to label and categorise posts so other users can easily
search for a topic. Example: to find posts on the Eastern Cape, users can search for
#easterncape

Some of the most popular hashtags:

#travel
#food
#photography
#photooftheday
#love

The number of hashtags in a post is unlimited. However, research showed that an average of
20 hashtags in a post reach the highest number of Instagrammers.

How do you tag a photo or video with a hashtag (#):

 # followed by words or emojis (e.g. #flower)
 Numbers are allowed in hashtags
 Spaces and special characters such as $ or % are not used.
Instagrammers tag their own posts, not those of others.

Below is an example of an Instagram page.

8. ADDENDUM G: SUSTAINABILITY

QUESTION 6.1: THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE

RESOURCE 1

LALIBELA GIVING BACK

Lalibela Private Game Reserve is in the Eastern Cape. It is home to
the Big Five and a variety of wildlife. Lalibela Private Game Reserve
is committed to conservation and sustainability. Guests pay a
conservation levy that is pledged towards conservation efforts and
community upliftment. The Game Reserve has implemented a range
of measures to reduce its environmental impact and protect the
area's biodiversity.

Sustainable initiatives implemented at Lalibela Game Reserve

 There is a variety of educational programs and workshops
to help educate visitors about the importance of
conservation and sustainability.
 A strict 'zero plastic policy': Items like sugar, coffee, butter
and jams are decanted into glass jars.
 Recycling policies for waste material and grey water are
implemented. Throughout the reserve there are recycling
bins for plastic, glass, tins and paper. The waste is
collected and taken to a nearby recycling plant.
 The reserve collects all leftover food scraps and sends them to farmers to feed the local pigs.
Some leftovers are converted to biogas.
 Alien tree species have been removed and replaced with indigenous grassland.
 They are committed to wildlife conservation and anti-poaching efforts. Some wildlife animals
are fitted with tracking collars to monitor their movements. A dedicated anti-poaching team
works round the clock to protect the wildlife.
 The project Pack with a Purpose initiative encourages guests to bring unwanted or surplus
items to the reserve, which is donated to nearby communities.
 Communities around the area are uplifted by ways of employment in various projects.
 The local soccer team, netball team, a gumboot dancing group and a boxing club are
supported by the game reserve.
 A community centre assists the local children with homework and stationery packs. They also
assist the pensioners with feeding schemes and special lunches during special holidays, like
Easter and Christmas.

10. ADDENDUM I: MY NICHE TOURISM PAT – REFLECTION

QUESTION 8: MY REFLECTIVE PARAGRAPH

Reflective paragraph
Consider what you have learned during the completion of the 2024 Tourism PAT to answer this
question.

What is meant by self-reflection?

The activity of thinking about your own experiences, feelings and behaviour, and the reasons
that may lie behind them.

Self-reflection is a mental process you can use to grow your understanding of who you are,
what your values are, and why you think, feel and act the way you do. When you self-reflect
and become more conscious of what motivates you, you can more easily make changes. This
will help to develop yourself and improve your lifestyle.
