REGISTRATION PROTOCOL

FACULTY OF EDUCATION
WORK-INTEGRATED LEARNING (WIL)

Dear Student Teacher


South African Council for Educators (SACE) is the professional council for educators that
aims to enhance the status of the teaching profession through appropriate Registration,
management of Professional Development and inculcation of a Code of Ethics for all
educators.
All student teachers need to be registered with SACE in a temporary capacity during their
WIL School Placement.
When you graduate, you must apply again to SACE for your complete, permanent SACE
registration. You cannot teach in South Africa without a SACE registration.

EXECUTION PLAN TO APPLY FOR A POLICE CLEARANCE AND SACE REGISTRATION

To ensure that the UP complies with the government’s requirements for all students registered for an
education degree to have a SACE registration, you need to begin with obtaining:
1. Police Clearance
2. SACE registration

Execution plan for Police clearance:


1. Identify dates early in the beginning of the year to do so.
2. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is the national police force of the Republic of
South Africa.
3. Go to the local SAPS in your area.
Step 1: Visit the nearest police station in the area where you have resided for the past few years.
Step 2: Request the application form for a police clearance certificate from the police personnel
and carefully fill in all the required details.
4. Afiswitch (Pty) Ltd provides a national automated electronic criminal record check against the
South African Police Service criminal fingerprint database.
5. Alternatively, go to Afiswitch, 012-679-2900 or write to: enquiries@afiswitch.com
6. Every fingerprint criminal clearance costs approximately +R175-00 ex VAT, including SAP 69
– a full report if there is a criminal record. The results (no illicit or Possible Record) will be
available within 48 hours.
7. The average time is approximately 14 working days from the day the complete application is
received at the Criminal Record Centre until the Clearance Certificate is issued.
8. Alternatively, take your Original ID (RSA ID Card or Book, RSA Driver’s License, or Foreign
Passport) to your closest participating POSTNET store. Let the POSTNET store capture your
information, photo and fingerprints. Select the service type you require. Pay in-store.

Execution plan Provisional SACE Registration (Student educators only)

2. A fully completed SACE application form. (Original form)
3. Certified copy of NSC or a matric certificate.
4. Certified copy of an identity document.
5. Certified copy of the proof of registration for the current academic year for education
qualification.

6. Proof of registration must be an official document issued by the University, on the University
letter head with a signature and a University stamp. (A Computer printout will not be
accepted).
7. For those who are studying towards a PGCE, we need proof of registration for the current
academic year together with the previous academic qualification and a complete academic
record stating that the qualification has been completed.
8. Please note that provisional registration is for student educators only.

Foreign educators

1. Fully completed SACE application form. (Original form)


2. Certified copy of matric certificate.
3. The application form must accompany the Original Evaluation Report (of foreign
qualifications) from either the DHE or SAQA.
4. Certified copies of a completed academic record and a certified copy of academic and
professional qualifications as submitted to SAQA.
5. Certified copy of the proof of registration (in SA) for the current academic year for an
education qualification for student educators. Proof of registration must be an official
document issued by the University, on the University letter head with a signature and a
University stamp. (No INTERNET, FAXED OR EMAILED DOCUMENTS WILL BE
ACCEPTED).
6. Certified copy of a valid passport and work permit OR a valid proof of a refugee permit
together with a refugee ID.
7. Certified copy of police clearance certificate (not older than 6 months).
8. No INTERNET, FAXED OR EMAILED DOCUMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Registration Fees

1. The application for registration must be accompanied by a registration fee of R200.00 for
South African Educators
2. R400.00 for Foreign Educators.
3. The annual levy is R180.00. (R15 per month)
4. No application will be processed without proof of payment.

Please note that:

1. For further information on: AET Educators, FET Educators, Montessori Educators,
Waldorf Educators, Islamic Educators, and Catholic Educators – please visit the

2. The SACE application form must be completed in black pen only and must be original.
3. Only the applicant can complete the SACE application form.
4. The certification stamp must be an original, clear, state that it is a true copy of the original,
and be dated and signed (copies of certification will not be accepted).
5. Only Commissioners of Oaths, SAPS and Post office certification will be accepted.
6. Certification should not be older than 3 months.
7. Copies of certified documents will not be accepted (no exceptions will be made)
8. No INTERNET, FAXED OR EMAILED DOCUMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
