Module I, Lesson 1
Moral and Non- Moral Standards
Introduction:
In this module, moral standards and non-moral standards shall be differentiated based
on rules of life.
Read the discussion and answer the following questions.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this module you should have:
1. Differentiated the moral standards from non-moral standards.
2. Illustrated the venn diagram showing the difference between moral standards from
non-moral standards.
3. Applied the value of moral standards and non-moral standards as indicated in your
reflection essay.

Learning Content: Read the Discussion and answer the questions that follow. Perform
the activities.
Moral values are the principles that guide us throughout our lives. It is important
because in life: If a person has never learned about moral values then how can he/she decide
between the good and the bad.
Moral standard refers to the norms which we have about the types of actions which we
believe to be morally acceptable. It deal with matters which can either seriously harm or
seriously benefit human beings.
Non- moral standards refer to rules that are unrelated to moral or ethical considerations.it
lack ethical sense
Moral Law. The rules of behavior an individual or a group may follow out of personal
conscience. It is a system of guidelines for behavior, for some people moral law is
synonymous with the commands of a divine being.
 What are morals and ethics?
Morals refer mainly to guiding principles, and ethics refer to specific rules and actions,
or behaviors. A moral precept is an idea or opinion that’s driven by a desire to be good. An
ethical code is a set of rules that defines allowable actions or correct behavior.

 Why are ethics important in life?


Ethics is a system of principles that helps us tell right from wrong, good from bad.
Ethics can give real and practical guidance to our lives. We constantly face choices that affect
the quality of our lives. We are aware that the choices that we make have consequences, both
for ourselves and others.

 Why are morals and ethics important?


Ethics serve as a guide to moral daily living and helps us judge whether our behavior
can be justified. Ethics refers to society’s sense of the right way of living our daily lives. It
does this by establishing rules, principles, and behavior standards which are enforced and
created by society.

 Is necessarily legal moral?


Acting legally is not necessarily acting ethically, but it is necessary for acting ethically.
The law is the minimum requirement, but morality may require people to go above and beyond
their basic legal obligations.
 Can something be morally right but ethically wrong?
In a moral point of view, YES. Someone can do something that is morally right but in
fact ethically and legally wrong.

 What are the examples of ethics?


 Integrity in personal and professional matters.
 Honesty, truthfulness and sincerity.
 Loyalty and allegiance.
 Responsibility, reliability and dependability.
 Charity and kindness.
 Respect for others and their property.
 Self-discipline and acting with reasonable restraint.

 What is the purpose of ethics?


The purpose of ethics is to define acceptable human behavior through knowing the
types of actions, its consequences, and th e limits of both humans and actions, as well as
their acceptability.

 What are the examples of ethics in daily life?


Our daily lives have ample examples of ethics. From obeying our elders to respecting
decisions of our siblings and friends. To express right or wrong in a way so as to not hurt
others plus not compromising yourself respect.

 What is the first rule of the moral law?


Do good and avoid evil.
 What do the rules of moral behavior tell us?
What we ought to do, and tells us what things to do.

Here are some ways you can apply ethics to your life:
1. Consider how you interact with animals. Some folks may think animals don’t ethically
matter.
2. Be kind to the environment.
3. Respect and defend human rights.
4. Become more ethical in your career.
5. Engage with medical advances.

Summary
Moral standards involved the rules people have about the kinds of actions they believe
are ,orally right or wrong as well as the values they placed on the kinds of objects they believe
are morally good or morally bad. While non-moral standards refer to rules that are unrelated to
moral or ethical considerations.
