Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the space
provided.
4. Walk through the The school halls are well-lit, with fluorescent ceiling lights illuminating
school halls, the the way. The walls have bulletin boards displaying student
library, and the achievements, announcements, and posters promoting various school
cafeteria. Look events. On the floor, there are marks from years of use, and
around and find out sometimes, pieces of trash are scattered. You'll notice the serene
the other facilities atmosphere with soft lighting as you enter the library. Tables and
that the school has. chairs are scattered throughout the space, providing quiet study areas
for students. Shelves are filled with books of various genres. However,
the books are disorganized. Upon entering the cafeteria, you'll
encounter a lively atmosphere filled with the echoes of conversation
and the clinking of utensils. Tables and chairs are set up to
accommodate students during lunchtime or breaks. Some posters
promote healthy eating and a strong sense of environmental
awareness. Fairness is also observed because students and teachers
share the same line and carry their trays.
1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What are posted on the walls? What heroes, religious
figures, lessons, visual aids, and announcements do you see posted?
Some classroom walls have minimal displays of the school’s vision, mission, and core values.
The color of the walls is white or cream, which gives a bright ambiance inside.
2. Examine how the pieces of furniture are arranged. Where is the teacher’s table located?
How are the tables and chairs/ desks arranged?
The chairs are arranged in a nice order of rows and columns, and there is enough space
between them. The teacher’s table is in the center front, where they can see everyone. The
number of chairs varies in each room depending on how wide and long the room is.
Be guided by these tasks as you do your observation. Then accomplish the matrix to record
your data.
During my recent classroom observation, I noted several interesting features and conditions
within the learning environment. In some classrooms, wall displays were positioned at the
front corners. These displays varied in presentation; some were affixed to cardboard, while
others were printed and laminated.
In terms of classroom arrangement, one consistent element was the teacher's table, which
was situated at the center front of the room, facing the students. The table appeared long
and tall enough to accommodate the teacher's needs.
The seating arrangement consisted of armchairs arranged in rows and columns, with
adequate spacing between them. Unfortunately, some chairs appeared quite old and worn,
with visible signs of wear and tear. The number of chairs in each classroom seemed to vary
based on the available space, reflecting the diverse classroom sizes.
At the front corner of the classroom, a blackboard was prominently placed, with the unique
feature of half of it being a whiteboard. The size of these boards differed according to the
classroom's dimensions, and many showed signs of prolonged use, bearing marks and
scratches from years of instruction. These boards appeared to serve as the primary medium
for visual aids and learning materials, although their content appeared to be subject to the
teaching methods of individual instructors.
Regarding the classroom's infrastructure, lighting fixtures were installed, but it was evident
that some were faulty and not functioning correctly. Similarly, while fans were present in
some rooms, others lacked adequate fans for effective ventilation. Additionally, some fans
also needed repair, further contributing to potentially uncomfortable conditions within the
classroom.
The observed classrooms displayed a mix of teaching materials and environmental conditions,
with variations in the quality and functionality of certain elements. These factors highlighted
the potential challenges teachers and students face in ensuring an optimal learning
experience within these classrooms.
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the students
going to school? What are your conclusions?
The school campus, including the individual classrooms, plays a crucial role in shaping
students' learning experiences. The physical environment of the campus can have a significant
impact on students' overall educational journey. In particular, the classroom setting has a direct
influence on their learning.
Classrooms serve as the primary backdrop for teaching and learning. The arrangement
of furniture, the presence and quality of instructional materials, and the overall condition of the
classroom can significantly affect students' engagement and comprehension. For instance, the
placement of the teacher's table and seating arrangement can determine the level of interaction
and focus in the classroom. The condition of the chairs and the availability of sufficient seating
also impact students' physical comfort, which, in turn, affects their ability to concentrate.
The presence and quality of instructional aids, such as whiteboards and visual displays,
can enhance or hinder teaching effectiveness. In classrooms where such aids are limited or in
disrepair, students may miss out on valuable visual learning opportunities. Moreover, the
condition of the blackboards or whiteboards, often bearing the marks of years of use, may
affect the clarity and legibility of the information presented.
The functionality of the lighting and ventilation systems is crucial for creating a
conducive learning environment. Inadequate lighting and faulty fans can lead to discomfort and
distractions, potentially hindering students' ability to focus on their studies.
The school campus and the classroom environment are integral factors in students'
learning experiences. The physical conditions and resources available in classrooms can
significantly impact teaching effectiveness and learning quality. Addressing issues such as
broken furniture, faulty equipment, and insufficient lighting and ventilation can create a more
conducive and productive learning environment for students. Furthermore, investing in the
upkeep and improvement of classroom infrastructure is essential to ensuring that all students
have the opportunity to thrive academically.
How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development? How does this
relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?
Child and adolescent development emphasizes the importance of creating supportive
and engaging learning environments tailored to the developmental needs of students. The
condition of classroom furniture and equipment, including broken and old chairs, can impact
physical comfort and posture. Ergonomic and comfortable seating arrangements promote
focused attention and maintain physical health. Inadequate seating may lead to discomfort and
potential distractions, hindering students' ability to engage in learning activities effectively.
The presence of instructional aids and visual displays is critical in facilitating learning. In
this regard, classrooms with limited or outdated visual aids may not fully support students'
diverse learning styles and developmental stages, potentially inhibiting their comprehension and
engagement.
The classroom's physical environment, including lighting and ventilation, is essential for
creating a conducive atmosphere for learning. The physical environment influences adolescents'
mood, behavior, and cognitive functioning. Inadequate lighting and faulty ventilation can lead
to discomfort and reduced cognitive performance, particularly relevant to adolescents as they
strive to master complex concepts and skills.
In terms of facilitating learning, educators should be attuned to the developmental
needs of their students and adapt the classroom environment accordingly. This includes
ensuring that teaching materials and aids are age-appropriate and engaging. Additionally,
addressing issues related to classroom infrastructure, such as repairing broken furniture and
improving lighting and ventilation, is essential for creating a supportive and effective learning
environment.
Classrooms should align with child and adolescent development principles by
highlighting the importance of a comfortable, well-equipped, and conducive learning space. To
facilitate learning effectively, educators should consider the developmental needs of their
students and strive to create an environment that supports their physical, cognitive, and
emotional growth.
REFLECT
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why not?
I want to teach in the school environment I have just observed because I believe it is not the
physical attributes of a school that matter when it comes to teaching but your passion and
commitment to do so. Being a part of the school community provides a sense of purpose and
the chance to impact students positively. I believe the factors or challenges in the classroom
environment can be addressed and appropriately resolved. We just need to find ways to engage
students and deliver quality education despite limitations.
OBSERVE
As you around and examine board displays, use the observation guide and forms provided for
you to document your observations.
1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board displays do you
see?
2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where viewers can see them?
3. What are the displays about? Hat key messages do they convey? What images and colors
do you see? How are the pieces of information and images arranged?
4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders used?
5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar inconsistencies and the like)
7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?
Based on the questions on the observation guide, write your observation report:
The displays varied in their content and purpose. Some were informative, displaying
important school announcements, while others showcased student achievements and
important school rules and values. Each display was distinct in its vital message and design.
Some prominently featured vibrant images and eye-catching colors, while others relied more
on text to convey their message. The arrangement of information and images varied from
one display to another, with some using grids for a neat organization while others adopted a
more creative and free-flowing layout.
Regarding materials, most displays used colorful poster paper and had decorative borders,
adding to their visual appeal. However, a few displays, with peeling edges and faded colors,
require maintenance. I noticed some misspelled words and grammar inconsistencies on some
displays, which could be improved for better clarity.
Overall, the messages on the display boards were clear and easily understood. What
particularly caught my attention were the displays featuring student’s achievements. This
makes other students to be motivated in their academic endeavors.
