- Chapter I

THE PROBLEM—ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

There’s been a rise of AI-based systems in the field of education and there’s an

existing problem regarding it. Can AI help students develop essential skills, such as

critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, more effectively, or is AI a

hindrance to the learner's capability to do it on their own without AI technology helping

them? Well in this research the researchers will thoroughly explore the effectiveness of

AI-based systems for learners in education. Nowadays there are a lot of adolescents

who are reliant on using AI just because it can save them from the upcoming deadline

of their school work doesn’t mean that they are safe from plagiarism and the underlying

risk that they can get caught for using AI. As of now, there are a lot of cases regarding

the fact that student cram their paperwork as well as procrastinate their work. When

submitting their work to the instructor eventually the teacher would notice that the

student uses AI because there’s also someone who submitted their work using Chatbot

to answer just like the student did. So, as a result, they both failed for lack of creativity

and originality. In my experience, I admitted that l also uses AI because it could help me

with the things that I don't know and it could give me an idea, guidance, and knowledge

for my schoolwork with just one click. I use them as well since I don't have time to do

assignments or other work that needs to be passed immediately the next day.

Now most learners rely on AI to complete their tasks. They may have lost being a

critical thinker since the more they get dependent on AI-based systems the more they

lose their authenticity and skill. In this generation, people entrust everything to Al

whether we admit it or not we know that Al is reliable to us and If I'm being honest, I also

use Al sometimes, and I've noticed that I tend to rely on using Al all the time and

because we are getting used to using Al applications, we assume that we are no longer

able to finish the work without relying on it. The point is that there is not a skill that we

will gather if we rely on Al. It’s indeed good to use artificial intelligence to search up

things you don’t know however if you just copy and paste the whole paragraph and just

call it done and pass this to your instructor then not only have you plagiarized

someone’s work you also cheated in the process because instead of using your skill to

the test you use Ai to make your work for you thus making you lazier and more

unmotivated to do your work.

Background of the Study

AI-based systems, a computer systems capable of performing complex tasks

that historically only a human could do, such as reasoning, making decisions, or solving

problems (2023). Its effect on the learners is that it makes their schoolwork easier

however, they don’t apply their skills to the test so they limit their potential to do better

and give it all that they have to do their schoolwork.

In the field of education, AI technologies can influence learning outcomes,

student engagement, and overall educational experiences. Through research, we can

identify the most effective ways to integrate AI into education to maximize its benefits to

learners. In essence, conducting a study about this will provide advocacy for students in

the proper manner of using it. Avoid being dependable despite its good benefits for the

individual. We still must balance using it in a way that we still be productive or use it to

boost our knowledge in various fields and aspects of learning Another challenge with

implementing AI in education in the Philippines is ensuring equitable access to

technology and training for both students and educators. Additionally, there may be

concerns about the impact of AI on traditional teaching methods and the need to

carefully integrate AI tools to enhance rather than replace human interaction and

personalized learning experiences for students.

Based on the foregoing discussion the researchers chose to discuss the AI-

based systems to know the advantages and disadvantages of AI to students and its

effect on their learning capabilities. In this topic, researchers study the different AI

applications that most learners often use and how reliable it is to help them with their

activities as well as to figure out how effective AI to helping learners achieve their

desired grades and what the teacher’s opinion about AI being necessary to learners’

education to enhance their learning in education field. Additionally, the researchers want

to gain more knowledge and understanding by exploring the effectiveness of AI-based

systems in education towards its effects on the selected students in Kasiglahan Village

Senior High School in using Ai based system and how it can help them, assist them,

and give them results that they desired and the type of Ai based system is commonly

used as well as the school learning activities that the student used an Ai approach to do

the task for them.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter of the paper presents the review of related literature and studies of

the AI-based AI system in education and its effect on learners and the synthesis of the

overall review.

Related Review of Literature

A review of various sources of literature determines that learners are becoming

more over-reliant on the AI-based system on their phones. Being dependent on

technology has made students face the risk of becoming overly reliant on AI-driven

technology. This could hold back the learning capacity of a child if they have been too

dependent on Artificial Intelligence, especially in the development of critical thinking and

creativity. As stated by Indrajit (2023) if AI became the main source of information and

guidance to students then there is a possibility that they develop a lack of crucial critical

thinking and problem-solving skills.

Additionally, a learning technique where students repeat certain information from

Ai answers that can enable them to learn quickly by recalling the meaning of the given

Ai response until it is instilled in their memory also known as rote memory could enable

the learner’s ability to criticize, analyze, summarize and apply their skill and knowledge

independently. Having said that, it is bad the fact that students are alternating to having

a dependency on technology could be a threat to releasing their full potential skills and

make them hold back in the knowledge they acquired by suppressing their skill and

relying on typing a prompt to an AI-based system and just be content on the answer that

was given with no comprehension whatsoever happens and just copy the

interoperability of a machine and paste it or write and claim as their work.

On the other hand, Karandish (2021) breaks it down that a learner's goal is

simple: receive a degree and then prove their knowledge. AI can help learners improve

their education by providing an offer of one-on-one assistance such as AI tutors and a

chatbot that can provide the need of each student's needs and preferences when it

comes to learning as well as Ai based system can enable the student to learn at their

own accord anytime anywhere when learners use Ai.

However, AI applications present challenges and concerns that need to be

addressed such as privacy and data security, ethical considerations, overall reliance on

using AI, access and equity, skill development and adaptability, and cost and

implementation. They also said that this AI application provides multiple good things,

but it also gives big problems to learners. Additionally, Minsky (2023) one of the

pioneers of AI cared about developing human potential; and also believed that rather

than programming learners with defined skills or vocations. He wanted tools and

inspiration to unlock their innate curiosity and creativity and saw AI as a tool to solve

complex problems and expand their (learners') understanding of the world AI teaches

students to accomplish their activities easily with the help of AI applications.

And lastly, as indicated by Vampugani & Swathi (2018) artificial intelligence is a

fascinating technological advancement that excels in creating advanced data-collecting

algorithms and delivering personalized student feedback. It has the potential to serve as

a virtual teaching assistant for educators and involve parents in the learning process,

providing them with the necessary information to support their children's success inside

the classroom. Artificial Intelligence helps to make students' lives easier by facilitating

their access to education using computers and smart device-based platforms. However,

AI also hurts education, the concern over the replacement of human teachers, leading

to reduced human interaction and personalized guidance for students, and one of the

biggest cons of AI in education is that they may not fully replicate the nuanced approach

that a human teacher can provide. A balanced approach that integrates AI with human

expertise, empathy, and understanding would be ideal to maximize the benefits of

technology in education while ensuring students receive a well-balanced approach

using AI and traditional learning.

Related Review of Studies

As stated by Ahmad et al. (2023) AI has been applied in various aspects of

education, such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, automated

essay grading, and personalized learning, and it has been able to enhance the learning

experience of learners by providing them personalized content, adapting to individual

learning styles, improving engagement, and offering feedback instantly. It has also been

associated with increased efficiency, reduced workload for educators, and improved

accessibility for students with disabilities. However, critics argue that AI may lead to a

decline in critical thinking skills, as students might rely too much on AI-generated

solutions. There are also concerns about data privacy, security, and the potential for AI

systems to perpetuate existing biases and inequalities lastly the reviewed studies

suggest that AI has the potential to revolutionize education by providing more efficient,

personalized, and engaging learning experiences. However, it is crucial to address the

challenges of AI and to ensure the effectiveness of applying AI in education to maximize

the benefits for learners.

Compared to Tahru (2021) his review focuses on the impact of chatbots in

education, discussing their influence on learning outcomes, applications, challenges,

and gaps in the existing research. Chatbots have shown significant enhancements in

learning achievement, explicit reasoning, and knowledge memory. They are primarily

used to teach different subjects by employing personalized learning approaches custom

to individual needs. Challenges in Chabot development include incompetent datasets,

usability, ethical concerns, evaluation methods, programming complexities, and data

automation issues. Thus, this review emphasizes the need for further research in

several areas, including examining the long-term effects of Chabot on learning

outcomes and their sustainability for informed educational decision-making,

understanding how different student characteristics interact with Chabot technology to

enhance targeted interventions, exploring specific pedagogical strategies employed by

Chabot for better educational tool development, and deepening user experience

analysis to guide future Chabot design and implementation in education.

Synthesis of the Review

By critically evaluating the existing research, articles, studies, and any form of

literature, the researcher can develop a well-informed perspective from various sources

relating to our topic and variables as well as the contribution of the ongoing discourse in

this area of study about AI in education and how it can affect to learners. The findings

that the researchers find related to our studies is that AI is already an existing problem

and solution that can enhance the learning of learners in the education field. It also

informs us that AI is a computerized system that imitates human intelligence in their

problem-solving skill but from what we gather AI has a lot of potential to aid us in our

learning such as personalized learning, adaptive learning platforms, automated grading

systems, and so much more benefits however there are still underlying concerns when

it comes to using artificial intelligence such as student becoming over-reliant on

technology, lack of skill and creativity, using AI can be a form of cheating and

plagiarism, ethical concerns, privacy, and security risk that overlaps with our research it

is something that the researchers need to address as well as critically explore the effect

of artificial intelligence in the field of education and how it can affect the learners who

are using it.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methodology used in this study. It comprises

research design, research locale, respondents and sampling procedure, research

instrument and validation instrument of AI-based system and education and its effect on

learners.

Research Design

The research design that will be utilized in this study will be a case study. As

explained by Priya (2020) Case Studies are a qualitative design in which the researcher

explores in depth a program, event, activity, process, or one or more individuals. The

case(s) are bound by time and activity, and researchers collect detailed information

using a variety of data collection procedures over a sustained period. A case study is an

appropriate research design for this qualitative research in able to have in-depth

research to explore the effectiveness of Ai AI-based systems for learners in education.

Research Locale

The study will be conducted in the Kasiglahan Village Senior High School. This

place was selected to explore the effectiveness of Ai Ai-based system in education and

what the effect will be on the learners at Kasiglahan Village Senior High School. The

respondents will receive a survey questionnaire in their respective classrooms. The

researchers chose the place of implementation because it will give the researchers the

needed information for conducting this research. The study will be conducted in the 2nd

semester of the academic year 2023-2024.

Respondents and Sampling Procedures

The sampling method that will be used in this research is the Quata sampling

method. As indicated by Nikolopoulou (2022) Quota sampling is a non-probability

sampling method that relies on the non-random selection of a predetermined number or

proportion of units. We use quota sampling to divide the population into subgroups or by

strands and then we recruit sample units until we reach our quota which is 12 selected

students in Kasiglahan Village Senior High School. In each of the 4 strands, we will be

selecting 3 respondents who relatively use AI in education to answer the survey

questionnaire that we provided.

Research Instrument

The data-gathering tool that will be used in our research is a

combination of both a close-ended questionnaire and an open-ended

questionnaire. According to SmartSurvey (2024) says that open-ended

questions are questions that require a participant to answer in their own

words. In comparison. close-ended questions, such as those that only allow

“yes” or “no” answers, or “correct” or “incorrect” answers to statements.

Alternatively, multiple-choice questions are also by definition closed, as

response options are limited and respondents must select from a list of

choices. The reason we are conducting this research is by providing

respondents with a survey questionnaire with open-ended and close-ended

questions because with a close-ended questionnaire, the researcher can

gather data on their perception of Ai AI-based system and more to explore

our statement of the problem. In addition, with open-ended questionnaire

can provide researchers with more information than a simple yes or no

answer and comment on the existing problem in our research.

Validation of Instrument

Validity refers to how accurately a method measures what it is intended to

measure. If research has high validity, that means it produces results that correspond to

real properties, characteristics, and variations in the physical or social world. High

reliability is one indicator that a measurement is valid. If a method is not reliable, it

probably isn't valid, Middleton (2023). In able to obtain accuracy and validity of the

research's content validation involves checking the content and coverage of the closed-

ended and open-ended survey questionnaire by the researcher's Practical Research 1

teacher Dr. Elva A. Ador in Kasiglahan Village Senior High School as well as gathering

data and providing evidence by using the survey questionnaire handed by the

researcher to the selected respondents. The researcher can ensure that their

instrument accurately measures the intended construct and is suitable for use in

exploring the effects of Al-based systems in education to learners in the Kasiglahan

Village Senior High School.
