WHY IMPROVED COOKING STOVE (ICS) IS REQUIRED?

03
BENEFITS OF BIOMASS STOVES
There are a number of advantages to switching from wood to a biomass stove, as biomass
fuels are created using waste from renewable resources, they are considered a green
energy source. Using leftover waste including wood scraps and sawdust to create
biomass fuels can also be seen as another way to recycle. Burning biomass fuels is an
extremely efficient heat source. Because of their size and composition are able to almost
completely burn, leaving behind very little waste in terms of ash. Biomass stoves must
burn with atleast 70% smokeless in compare to traditional three stone stove and having
low costs to maintain and operate.
Cooking practices are divided into three main categories,
1 By the use of Electric and LPG burners.
2 Using a traditional cook stove (3 Brick stove)
3 Using an Improved Cook Stove to burn biomass (wood, dry plant leaves,
wastage and dry coconut shells etc) a best alternative to traditional cook stove.
Use of an Improved Biomass cook stove represents the cleanest alternative for
traditional cooking stoves. ICS stoves are used in developing countries due to the high
costs of electricity and limited access in rural areas. Similarly, LPG is costly option and its
distribution in the developing countries are inadequate and limited in quantity. Efficient
biomass cook stoves with improved combustion technology is currently the only
available and affordable clean cooking alternative mainly due to wider availability of free
or cheaper biomass (wood, cow dung, saw dust, compacted briquettes from dried
biomass of leaves etc). Therefore, the focus on biomass 'cook stoves' (also called as
Chulha in India) and technology referred to as "improved cook" stoves.
WHAT IS AN IMPROVED COOK STOVE (ICS)?
Improved Cook stoves are modern biomass cook stove that are designed manner that
emits low smoke, gives better safety from flame, reduces heat loss, gives option of
portability, provides better thermal efficiency and utilizes less biomass for cooking this
helps in improving life of women and reduces the deforestation rate. ICS stoves are
designed with different air drafts in stove body that provides better combustion and
makes a better method of cooking in omparison to traditional cook stoves in rural areas.
Instead of waiting 3-5 years to grow a tree, imagine saving one every 3-5 years
simply by switching one household from traditional cooking method to “Efficient
Biomass Stoves”.
04
TYPES OF PORTABLE ICS STOVES
Natural Draft Improved Cook Stoves
Conventional designs are basically open flames
and do not incorporate any advanced principles
of combustion. The conventional stoves are
modified to reduce the energy loss. Improved
system will trap the heat inside the stove and
direct it to the pot, thereby increasing thermal
efficiency and combustion quality significantly.
Natural draft stove uses the natural wind to
improve the combustion inside the stove and no
external power is supplied to improve the
combustion method, these stoves are 100%
maintenance free and any dry biowaste can be
used as fuel.
Forced Draft Stove (Most efficient)
Forcing air (Oxygen) into a fire is an
established and effective way to raise
flame temperature and intensity and also
to reduce emissions by encouraging
complete combustion. Alternative
designs exist where airflow is forced
using a fan or air compressor etc. Forced
draft stove provides highest thermal
efficiency in all the improved biomass
cook stoves and any dry biowaste can be
used as fuel.
