Spices Board (Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt.
of India), the flagship
organization for the development and worldwide promotion of Indian spices has been
spearheading activities for promotion and facilitation of spice trade by strengthening
linkages at various levels of the spice industry.
India is popularly known as the “Spice Bowl of the World” as a wide variety of spices
are grown in the country since ancient times. India is the largest producer, consumer
and exporter of spices of the world. India's spice exports, with a volume of 17,58,985
tons valued Rs.30973.32 crores during 2020-21, scaled the landmark level of 4.1
billion US$ in value realization, besides recording a growth rate of 37% in volume,
16% in rupee terms and 11% in dollar terms of value over the previous year, despite
the global pandemic.
Spices Board's office network in Karnataka includes 7 field offices, 5 departmental
nurseries, 2 divisional Offices and 3 regional offices across the State and a regional
reserarch station at Donigal near Saklespur. The Board implements various
schemes in Karnataka including Cardamom replanting, Production of planting
materials by the farmers, Purchase of Irrigation devices, Construction of Farm Ponds,
Pepper threshers besides providing extension services like field visits/group
meetings/seminars. The departmental nurseries produce quality cardamom
seedlings and pepper rooted cuttings for supplying to the growers. Research station
at Donigal is engaged in producing Hybrid varieties of cardamom and supports the
farmers with different agro techniques. The Board is committed to transfer the latest
technology to the farmers in cultivation and post harvest operations of cardamom and
for post harvest management of other spices.
The State of Karnataka is blessed with ideal weather for the cultivation of variety of
spices. Pepper, the King of Spices and cardamom, the Queen of Spices along with
nutmeg and clove are grown mainly in the western ghat region of Coorg, Hassan,
Chikmagalore, Shimoga and North Karnataka districts. Chillies, turmeric, ginger,
tamarind, garlic, coriander are mainly grown in the plain lands. During 2020-21,
Karnataka produce the 665350 MT of spices in an area of 360145 Ha. The State
produced 36,000MT of black pepper in an area of 1,60,774 Ha during the year 2021
contributing 45% in quantity and 5.5% in value of the total production of black pepper
from the country.
Spices Board with a view to further promote the export of spices and spice products, is
organizing Buyer Seller Meets (BSM) regularly, so as to provide a common platform
for the Buyers and Sellers of the spice industry, to interact directly and establish
effective business linkages. Accordingly, Spices Board, Regional Office,
Sakaleshpur, Karnataka is organizing an online Buyer Seller Meet for black pepper
with focus on Karnataka on 24.03.2022. Around 60 sellers/producers representing
FPOs, progressive farmers, farmer's societies, processors and traders from
Karnataka and around 65 exporters/buyers are attending this event. The list of buyers
