Introduction to women
entrepreneurship

Women entrepreneurs may be defined as the

women or a group of women who set up and
operate her own enterprise. In other words women
entrepreneurs are self employed individuals who
establish their enterprise and involve themselves
for economic activities. Earlier women were
confined in the four walls of houses and their
activities were mainly related to household work,
without any socio-economic independence. Today
women are marching ahead in almost every field
and generating employment not only for
themselves but also for others.
Role of women
entrepreneurs in India
Women are important in the economic growth of
India. Women must be encouraged and motivated
to participate in any business activity. Women
dominate a significant portion of the informal
economy and also have more micro and small
enterprises in India. In order to accelerate
economic growth, there is a need to increase the
number of women entrepreneurs. Both
domestically and within society, women
entrepreneurs act as agents for change that
motivate other members of society into such
ventures . The nation’s assets are women
entrepreneurs because they are involved in some
productive activities hence providing jobs for other
people. This can be done through poverty
reduction as well as minimizing unemployment
problem.
Significance of Women in
India’s Entrepreneurial
Sector
As our country needs to encourage and use all
resources to the maximum including human
resources, the involvement of women in
economic activities is of great importance not
only from human resource point of view but
even from the view of raising the status of
women in our society. Economic status of
women is now accepted as an indicator of a
society’s stage of development. Hence it
becomes crucial for the government to frame
certain policies that help in the development of
entrepreneurship among women. There is a
need for due recognition that has to be given for
the role and contribution of women in the
various economic ,social and cultural activities.
Opportunities to Indian
Women Entrepreneurs
For women entrepreneurs, the Indian market is full of
opportunities. Because they have a large population
and household spending is rising, there’s scope for
new technology, e-commerce and online retailing,
healthcare services, fashion and beauty products as
well as education. The country has a number of
programs that are aimed at promoting women
entrepreneurship aimed at improving their economic
situation. It includes Stand-up India, MUDRA Yojana
and Bhartiya Mahila Bank which provide financial
assistance, trainings and mentoring for female
business owners. Therefore, the growth in digital
infrastructure as well as e-commerce platforms has
actually put men on equal footing with women
entrepreneurs in India. This thereby brings out a
situation where women can easily reach customers
using online retailers such as social media or digital
marketing at an affordable price to make sales or scale
up using internet marketing tools among others.
