BEFORE OPERATING YOUR NEW EMDEK SPRAYER, PLEASE TAKE TIME TO READ THROUGH THIS MANUAL CAREFULLY AND INSTRUCT YOUR OPERATOR ACCORDINGLY ON ITS PROPER USAGE. This little time may prove to be most useful because’ PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE! SAFETY PRECAUTIONS : The following safety precautions must be observed to help prevent accidents to all personnel and must be strictly adhered to 1. Do not permit anyone other than the operator to ride on the tractor when in transport or during operation. Do not permit anyone to sit or ride on the sprayer unit when in transport or during operation. Never leave the tractor unattended when the engine is still running, switch off the engine and remove the key. Always switch off the tractor engine and disengage the tractor power, take off (PTO) before attempting to clean, adjust or lubricate the tractor or implement when mounted. Before operations, always check that all nuts and bolts are properly tightened. When a new machine is delivered, new paint on working parts are either Temoved or compressed during work, thus bolts and nuts will tend to work loose. It is important that all nuts and bolts are re-tightened after about 4 - 5 hours of work from new. On no account do not insert hands into the sprayer pump area when the implement is still attached to the tractor especially when the engine is still running " Do not stand on the frame of the sprayer or it risks the likelihood of being damaged Operator Safety * Read and understand this instruction manual before using the equipment. It is important that the operator of the equipment understand the manual. Test pressure with clean water before filing with chemicals. Wear protective clothing, Rinse and wash equipment after use and before servicing Depressurize equipment after use and before servicing. Never service or repair the equipment whilst it is operating. Always replace all safety devices or shields immediately after servicing. Do not eat, drink or smoke whilst spraying or working with contaminated equipment. Wash and change clothes after spraying. Wash tools if they have become contaminated. In case of poisoning, seek doctor or ambulance. Remember to identify chemicals. used. Keep children away from the equipment. Do not attempt to enter the tank. If any part of this manual remains unclear after reading it, contact your EMDEK sprayer dealer for further explanation before using the equipment. Use clean water to test pressure before filing with chemical. Description: The Emdek tractor mounted sprayer models consists of a diaphragm pump, frame with tank, basket filter, pressure adjustment with control system for pressure control on/off switch for spraying. The unit may be supplied with blanket spray boom, hand lances or other custom built configurations. The design of the diaphragm pump is simple, with easily accessible diaphragms and valves that ensures liquid does not come in contact with vital parts of the pump. The tank, made of impact-proof and chemical resistant polyethylene/fiberglass, is specially designed with no sharp edges for cleaning and is mounted to the steel frame by sitting on the edge of the tank giving full support of the chemical load onto the frame. A external suction filter is located at the bottom of the tank connecting the tank and the pump. The tank cover is fitted with a strainer basket. The pressure control system consists of a main onvoff function, pressure adjustment with pressure gauge and distribution valves for closing or opening of each individual valve, hand lances or boom sections. The blanket spray boom (optional) is mounted on the tank frame and is fitted with spring loaded breakaways at the pivots. The boom can be folded for transport. ‘An identification plate is fitted on the sprayer frame indicating the supplier's name and address, model, year of production and the serial number. This information must be noted down when contacting us or when ordering spare parts. SPRAYER TANK CONSTRUCTION Tank construction is of durable polyethylene (PE) to ensure rigidity with reinforcements and buffer plates inside the tank to prevent sloshing. Polyethylene (PE) is chosen as it is able to withstand chemicals and tropical sunlight and high temperatures better. Furthermore, polyethylene (PE) is much easier to repair in the event of damage and can easily be repaired by yourself or by any local polyethylene fabricators. The frame is of steel welded which is designed to allow the polyethylene (PE) tank to be seated directly on top so that the tank is supported all round to ensure sturdiness during field transporting and able to absorb vibrations without damaging the tank. Mounting of the tank onto the frame are by means of clamps, this allows the tank to be easily removed when required for servicing or repairs. The sprayer tank has an opening at the top, with a cover to facilitate the checking of the tank internals as well as the placement of chemicals to be mixed. The cover is also fitted with breathers for all capacity models to allow expulsion of air when filling or when working, ‘The opening of the tank is fitted with a basket strainer. Do not remove the basket strainer when filling the tank with chemicals or liquids. Always fill the tank with water before adding chemicals to the tank. DO NOT FILL CONCENTRATED CHEMICALS INTO THE TANK FIRST!!! Concentrated chemicals could cause damage to the tank and pump components!! The sprayer is fitted with an external suction strainer, also an external 3-way valve for filling the tank from a river or an external water source. Together with the 3 way valve, a 5M suction hose with a foot suction strainer is supplied. Assembly and Pre-delivery Inspection The complete machine is normally delivered to you fully assembled except for the PTO drive shaft. These are normally stored inside the tank during delivery to ensure that they are not damaged or lost during transport, loading and unloading. MOUNTING THE SPRAYER TO THE TRACTOR FOR OPERATION First ensure that the tractor engine is off. This sprayer is designed for use only with tractors having 540 RPM PTO shaft 6 spine 1.3/8" dia. Excessive wear and tear resulting from use with tractors of more than 40 RPM PTO rpm will not be warranted 1. The Emdek sprayer is to be mounted onto the three tractor point linkage just like any other PTO driven implement. Attach the spreader onto the lower links and the top link of the tractor. As the sprayer is an off ground implement, use POSITION CONTROL on tractor hydraulics system. Ensure that the top link you have is of the right length to enable the implement to work in a level position. 2. Once the top link and lower link are fitted, ensure that the check chains or stabilizers bar are tightened such that there is only a slight movement allowed when pushed from left to right. Connect the PTO shaft of the sprayer to the tractor PTO. A JZ 3. _ Ensure that the implement is mounted horizontally such that the sprayer frame or sprayer blanket spray boom (optional) is parallel to the flat ground, adjustment maybe made by raising or lowering the right hand lower link lift rod box lever. First, ascertain the length of the left-hand lift rod as recommended by your tractor manufacturer. Having the lift rods too long will limit the height the spreader to be raised when in operation and may be the major source of frequent PTO joint and gearbox damage. If mounted too low you will not get the desired height to give maximum spraying height when using a blanket spray boom. APPLY OIL AT THE PTO MALE/FEMALE SHAFTS TO ENSURE SMOOTH — SLIDE DURING WORK. Approximately" left and right movement 4. Adjust the top link such that when the sprayer is raised to the ideal working position, the machine must be horizontally parallel to the ground and that the PTO drive shaft is as straight as possible to avoid damage or excessive wear and tear. LEVEL. LEVEL Side view of machine Depending on the tractor used, you may find sometimes that when fully loaded with liquid/chemicals, the tractor front end may lift off the ground, this may not necessary mean that the tractor has insufficient power to drive the sprayer pump, but all it needs are some weights mounted at the front end of the tractor fo counter-balance the rear. The PTO shaft is supplied standard. Mount one end of the shaft (clutch side) onto the sprayer pump and the other to the tractor PTO. This is done by pressing the lock pin on the journal, insert it into the shaft, then release the pin and move the journal until the pin is click-locked into the shaft groove. After attaching the PTO shaft, check if the shaft length is suitable for the make and model of the tractor you are using. Under normal circumstances, the shaft is always supplied a little longer than actual requirement to overcome the problem of different tractor 3 point linkage dimensions. If the shaft is found to be too long, it must be cut to suit, see diagram below on cutting the shaft. After mounting the sprayer unit to the 3 point linkage of the tractor, adjust the top link and lower link lift rods again to ensure that the sprayer tank horizontal to the ground level AFTER LIFTING THE SPRAYER UNIT TO ITS NORMAL WORKING POSITION (In this case, normally when the PTO drive shaft is straight in line with the pump.) el TL Diag. Cut the universal (PTO) shaft length to suit your tractor ADJUSTMENT OF OPERATING UNIT Turn main on/off handle on the control system to off position Set all hand levers on the distribution valve on the control system to spraying position. Put the tractor in neutral and set the engine revolutions and thereby the number of revolutions of the pump corresponding to the intended traveling speed, Remember the number of revolutions on the PTO must be kept between 300- 550rpm, Turn the main on/off handle on the control system to spraying (on) position Now turn the pressure regulating valve on the control system until the required pressure is indicated on the pressure gauge. Operating the control system unit while driving To close the entire boom or spraying hand lances, turn the main control system handle to off position. This takes the pressure off the pump. The liquid will then return to the tank via the return system. DRAIN VALVE OPERATION A drain valve cap is located under the tank. Unscrew it to drain the tank. Be careful not to loosen the seal or gasket. FILTERS Clean the filters ensure: Sprayer components such as valves, diaphragms and operating unit are not hindered or damaged during operation. Nozzle blockage do not occur whilst spraying, Long life of pump. A blocked external suction fitter will result in pump cavitation The main filter protecting sprayer components is the extemal filter located near the tank and the pump. Check it regularly, also regularly check the nozzle filters. PUMP USED Emdek sprayer is fitted with a variety of pump options depending on the application required Please refer to other parts of this manual to locate the spare parts lists of the pump and control system Before running the pump, ensure that you have at least a few litres of water inside the sprayer tank, the volume of water should be sufficient to fill up the complete spraying system to lock out any air that may be present. PUMP OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE : Before Running The Pump Ensure That : (Please refer to the pump drawing in other parts of this manual) 1) Oilis halfway up in the oil filler sight glass. If necessary, top up to correct level with ESSO MOTOR OIL 10W/30. 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) The suction line is tightly screwed to the suction union and that the fiter (strainer) is always in place. Any air suction will lower the working efficiency of the pump. For the same reason, ensure that all connections are tightened before use as they could have become loosen during transport.) Check the air in the compression cylinder. This is seen by the inflation valve above the dome of the air chamber. The ideal pressure in the top of the dome is one tenth that of the working pressure. Go to the control system, open the pressure regulating valve by raising the lever and at least, one tap. Run the pump for one to two minutes at Zero pressure to ensure complete evacuation of air. To adjust the working pressure, control can be obtained with the adjustment knob on the control system. It is important that the pump does not exceed 540 R.P.M.. Above this speed no advantage in pressure or output is obtained and unnecessary wear and damage will result. Should the pump be used at a higher speed than the above mentioned one, the manufacturer declines all responsibilty for it and warranty will be void. When ordering spare parts, please refer to the parts lists at the end of this manual, it is essential to state: 1) Type of the pump 2) Part number 3) Quantity PUMP MAINTENANCE AFTER USAGE 1) After use, clean out the pump by running it through for a few minutes with clean water. This will prevent the formation of chemicals which could interfere with normal working. End with the suction line out of the water to ensure a complete emptying of the pump. Drain all remaining liquid out of the tank by opening the drain plug at the bottom of the tank. 2) Owing to the particular acid resisting material employed for valves and diaphragms and the full oil spraying for every moving part, these pumps require no maintenance at all. From time to time check oil level and top up to correct oll level if necessary. After running the pump for some time, should the oil in the oil filler sight glass changes its colour to milky white, it is a sign that the diaphragm is broken and liquid has gone into the oil sump of the pump. Stop work immediately and replace the diaphragm before damage. 3 Lubrication of the pump! is essential. Change oil every 200 hours or at the end of each season, whichever is the least. To drain, turn the pump upside down, first removing the oil filer cap. Rotate the shaft by hand until oil stop flowing. Refill with ESSO MOTOR OIL 10W/30 or its equivalent, To ensure complete evacuation of air from the pump body, rotate the shaft by hand and slowly introduce the oil. The correct level will be obtained when oil is completely introduced in the sump. 4) Examine diaphragms and valves at the end of each season. 5) For long period storage drain pump completely, particularly the hose of the Lower Half Compression Cylinder and the Heads. POSSIBLE TROUBLES THEIR CAUSES AND REMEDIES TROUBLE CAUSE REMEDY The pump does not draw water. One or more valves are seating improperly. Examine the valve settings and clean them. Pressure gauge fluctuates badly. The pump is sucking air through the suction union or air has not been entirely evacuated from the pump. Examine the suction hose and ensure it is firmly | secured. Rotate the pump with the outlet hose and taps open The liquid flow is irregular. The air in the compression cylinder is incorrectly. Check pressure in compression cylinder (one tenth of working pressure) Water is pumped at tittle or no pressure. ‘The sealing washer on the pressure control valve is worn. Renew washer and, if necessary also its seating, Output drops and the pump is noisy. Oil Level is too low. ‘Top up with oil to correct level (Halfway of the sump) Oil comes out of the discharge pipe. One or more diaphragms split. Drain the pump of oil | Dismantle the heads and fit new diaphragms. Fill to correct oil level with Engine Oil 20Wi30 or equivalent. OLD & NEW TANK FILLING METHODS - Some older model EMDEK sprayers are fitted with venturi type ejectors for quick filling of the tank from an external source. This device, when closed, acts as an agitator and mixer for the liquid inside the tank. The diagram below explains its functions of an external ejector: Liquid from an ecemnal souree ‘When Filfing tank from external : ‘Whee not filling but doing. source seraying work To fill the tank with water from an external source, you must have a external suction hose fitted with a foot strainer. Connect the suction hose to the ejector device on top of the tank as indicated on the flow chart, and immerse the foot strainer end into the external tank or stream. Ensure that the tank has some water inside the tank first. Then switch on the outlet on the control system to which the ejector device is connected. Start the tractor and turn on the tractor PTO to which the pump is connected. Run the PTO at approximately 540 PTO rpm. ADJUST THE PRESSURE ON THE CONTROLS SYSTEM TO GIVE THE DESIRED SPEED OF FILLING THE TANK, THE HIGHER THE PRESSURE, THE FASTER THE TANK FILLS. BUT PLEASE ENSURE THAT WHEN ADJUSTING PRESSURE, THE NEEDLE ON THE PRESSURE GAUGE DOES NOT GO INTO THE RED ZONE ! All new models of sprayers are fitted without the venture type ejectors but with a 3 way valve. The 3 way valve is mounted near the external filter and the bottom of the tank. It can be connected with the supplied suction hose through a quick fit connectors. Refilling the tank with a 3-way valve (Supplied on some models) Pressure is reduced to-zera (minimum) River or water Sway valve Low Pressure ‘High Pressure ‘Medio Pressure Spraying Operation t—— Overflow Retuin to spray RE requirement FLOW CHART EXTERNAL SUCTION STRAINER (FILTER) It is placed between the tank and the pump and strains any impurities which are in the liquid to be sprayed. To ensure that the machine to be in good working condition, unscrew the strainer cap, remove the screen and clean periodically washing it with clear water. SPRAYER CONTROL SYSTEM Sprayers are control by a flowipressure control system unit. Please refer to the section on the flow/pressure control system installed on your machine. DESCRIPTION AND USE It consists of a main pressure adjustable knob regulating valve and several outlet valves. The main regulating valve and the single outlets are made from high resistant materials for high chemical resistance. HOSE CONNECTIONS The pressure hose from the pump is connected to the pressure line external fiter (strainer). The return hose to tank is connected to the outlet at the rear of the pressure adjustment knob unit. Boom connection hoses are fitted to the outlets depending on the number of boom sections or hand lances. (One outlet is permanently connected to the tank filling device.) Method of Operation Pressure is regulated by the hand knob at the control system unit Clockwise - higher pressure Anti-clockwise - lower pressure Note: Pressure is regulated only when the main valve lever is in the ON Position. OFF position: lever in vertical up position. Liquid flows at zero pressure back to the tank. The flow to outlet valves is closed (ie. no nozzle dripping), achieved by suck back device which operates automatically when the main valve lever is in the OFF position. ON position: lever in vertical down position. Liquid flows through the outlet valves to the boom sections at the adjusted pressure. OFF valve lever up ON valve lever down These positions do depend on the type and model of control system used on your sprayer, please check your operators manual and test the machine physically to ascertain the correct operating positions. The control partly absorbs pressure increase due to closing of boom sections. The oil filed pressure gauge shows the adjusted pressure. Check the gauge often. A badly working gauge could badly damage spraying results. After use run water for a few minutes to clean up the system. SPRAY BOOM Booms are supplied in 3 different widths, galvanized steel frames, with stainless steel piping, 35 bar (Kg/sq. high pressure connecting hoses, brass nozzles, ant drip valves and fan spray tips. The booms will be in five sections which can be folded for transporting Nozzles are fitted at 50 cm. apart Choice of boom width 8 metre 10 metre 12 metre When ordering spare parts, check the width of boom on your machine.
