1.What is a multipurpose river valley project? Give any four objectives of
the multipurpose river valley projects.
The multipurpose river valley project is a project in which a dam is constructed on the
river and stored water is then used in many ways like irrigation and power generation.
Objectives of the multipurpose river valley projects are:
a. Dams are constructed to control flood and to provide irrigation facilities.
b. To generate hydropower.
c. Dams are constructed to conserve water, vegetation, and soil.
d. It also helps to promote tourism.
2.Highlight . Disadvantages of multipurpose river valley projects.
The disadvantages of multipurpose dams include:
- Disruption of natural environmental processes.
- Massive loss of forests and wildlife.
- Permanent destruction of terrestrial ecosystems through inundation.
- Inducing water logging and salinity.
- Fisheries are also affected due to the barriers created.
- Displacement and resettlement of affected people.
- Causing increased pressure on residual forests and other common lands which further
leads to accelerated degradation.
-It was observed that these projects induced earthquakes.
3.Suggest some ways to conserve water resources.
a. Creation of more water storage.
b. Awareness should be spread about reasons of water scarcity.
c. Development of rainwater harvesting techniques and watershed developments.
d. Over irrigation should be stopped.
e. Setting up of more and more recycling of water plants.
4.What is rain water harvesting? What are benefits of rainwater
harvesting?
Rain water harvesting as a method of utilizing rainwater for domestic and agriculture
use is already widely used throughout the world.
Rainwater harvesting increases water availability.
It checks the declining water table.
It is environment friendly.
Rainwater harvesting improves the quality of groundwater through the dilution of
fluoride, nitrate and salinity.
Prevent soil erosion and flooding especially in urban areas.
5.What is water scarcity? What are its main causes?
Water scarcity is a situation where water is short in comparison to the minimum
requirements for daily use.
The main causes of water shortage are
Growing population and need for water for domestic purposes.
Expansion of agriculture.
Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation
Poor quality of water, water may be polluted by industrial and domestic waste.
