GRADE 7 ARTS
ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MINDANAO
I. Attire, Textiles, and Tapestries
1. BILAAN / B’LAAN (South & North Cotabato, Davao del Sur)
 “bila” – house “an” – people
 Known for embroidery, brass ornaments, and beadwork – integrated in their
traditional clothing
 Made from Abaca (embroidery, buttons and beads)
 Wear heavy brass bells with numerous tiny bells
 Cut mother-of-pearl into small shapes look like sequins (takmun) to form
geometric shapes
 Ikat – process of dyeing the fabric where the yarns are tightly wrapped with
string and dyed before weaving. (black, brown, red or ochre – darker shade of
orange, and ecru – color of the undyed abaca)
1. BAGOBO (Davao)
 “bago” – new “obo” – growth
 T’nalak – made from abaca
 Men’s wear - t’nalak shorts, a undershirt, and a t’nalak coat
 Bagani - blood-red clothes & head kerchief called tangkulu
 Women’s wear – wrap around t’nalak , skirts, and blouses (with floral
patterns, checkers or paisley prints) has shorts bell sleeves and waist area
that falss right above the abdomen
1. T’BOLI (South Cotabato)
 T’nalak - sacred
 Complicated beadworks, wonderful woven fabrics, and beautiful brass ornaments
 Lang Dulay – dream weaver , received the National Living Tresures – Gawad

1. MARANAO (Lanao)
 Maranao – means ‘People of the Lake’
 Malong – tube skirt, multicolored cotton, cloth, bearing a variety of geometric or floral design
 Kapa Malong or Sambisa Malong – traditional dance that demonstrate the various ways of wearing a malong
and its uses.
1. YAKANS (Basilan)
 Used bold color and geometric shapes
 Seputangan – square cloth used by women as head cover or as belt
 Badjulapi – tight blouse with long sleeves, ornamented with gold, silver, or bronze buttons
 Sawal – traditional tight-fighting trousers characterized by vertical stripes
 Pinalantupan - skirt layered over trousers

i. Crocodile tooth necklace - for fortune
ii. Triangular amulets – wrapped in black cloth (anting – anting) against bullets
iii. Snake bone belts - guard from pain
iv. Maniktegiyas – beads from dried fruits seeds to protect from illness caused by evil spirits
v. Maniksembulan - made of bamboo stems cut into short pieces, serves as added protection

ii. Lutuan – a small bronze box with engravings carried at the waist

1. TOROGAN – ancestral house, dwelling place of the datu and his family

2. BADJAO HOUSES - boat houses or house on stilts around Sulu archipelago
3. THE GRAND MOSQUE OF COTABATO – largest mosque of the Philippines
 Named after Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid of Brunei
 Occupies 5000 square meter of a five-hectare land

a. Rarub-A-Klong- metallic armor (vest)
b. Kampilan – singled-edged steel sword with a handle made of hand
carved ivory
c. Batige – large manually carved wooden top inland with mother-of-
pearl, used by male to test their strength
d. Kendi – teapot or kettle
e. Gador - tobacco container

V. Functional Art
1. Balanghai - large wooden boat used by pre-colonial Filipino to transverse the seas for trade and
migration, oldest Pre-Hispanic watercraft found in the Philippines
2. Vinta - consist of sail of several colors and geometric shapes, small and not meant to be used for
long ocean travel, used for livelihood activities such as fishing and diving for pearls and
transportation around the archipelago.
