Ajirna(Indigestion)
Definition According to classic
Ayurveda, the word ajirna in Sanskrit
means bad (a)digestion (jirna)
It is defined as a pathological condition
in which food is not digested easily and
is the root cause for many internal
diseases (metabolic).
Etiology
According to Ayurveda, the chief causes that affect digestion are the following:
1. Drinking too much liquid or 5. Suppression of nature’s
call or urges like hunger,
water defecation, etc.
2. Irregular eating habits, which 6. Sleep disturbances
include erratic schedules and 7. Emotional disturbances
quantities 8. Seasonal changes
3. Food allergies 9. Debilitating chronic
4. Iatrogenic indigestion due to
improper application of illnesses
Clinical Diagnosis
The following clinical features as described in classic
Ayurveda help to diagnose the three pathological states
of enzyme:
1. Abnormal state of enzyme (vishamagni)
2. Increased state of enzyme (tikshnagni)
3. Decreased state of enzyme (mandagni)
Classification of Indigestion
1. Endotoxic indigestion (ama ajirna)
2. Acid indigestion (vidagdha ajirna)
3. Static indigestion (vishtabdha ajirna)

Synonyms
Agni: It has fiery hot nature like fire. Agnika: It is
similar to fire in properties and virya. Analanama:
It is named after fire.
Daruna: It is extremely hot in property. Dipaka: It
stimulates digestive fire.
Jaran: It promotes digestion of food. Pathi: It is
sharp like the teeth of wild animals.
Ushana: It is hot in pungency and virya. Vyala: It
has sharpness and tearing effect like wild animals
Morphology
A perennial, subscandent shrub, 60 to 120 cm high with woody,
spreading, green striated branches.
Leaves: Simple, alternate, about 8 cm long and 3 cm broad,
ovate shape, acute apex, glabrous, entire, short red petiole,
amplexicaul at the base, and often dilated into stipule like
auricles.
Flowers: White, bracteate, often branched, glandular in long
terminal spikes, 10 to 30 cm long, bisexual.
Fruits: Oblong capsules, pointed, contained in viscid,
glandular, persistent calyx. Sceds oblong and purple colored.
Bark : thin and brown colored. The plant is propagated through
seeds and stem cuttings.
