outdoor recreation.
In the first part of our lesson, we define outdoor recreational activity as done in an
open area or outside of an enclosed space. Like indoor recreational activity, an
outdoor recreational activity provides a wonderful experience and may develop a
participant’s fitness and as well as good judgment. Active participation in an
outdoor activity may facilitate leadership skills, good social communication, and
survival instincts.
The following are some outdoor recreational activities:
1. Hiking- involves walking a long distance usually done for pleasure and exercise.
Pleasure includes having a close encounter with nature, enjoying the beauty of
the environment, smelling the natural aroma of flowers and trees, and being one
with Mother Nature. Exercise on the other hand pertains to the fitness benefits
that we get from the activity. So, hiking is more of an adventure. This is a good
activity for a person who has a sedentary job which involves lots of sitting.
Additionally, this activity is economical and convenient since it does not require
any special equipment. This allows the hikers to walk long distances provided
that they can last long walks even for hours.

BENEFITS OF HIKING
 It offers cardiovascular fitness.
 It gives the feeling of relaxation.
 It balances your daily life routine.
 It’s a good option for weight management activity.

ESSENTIAL GEARS IN HIKING

Hiking involves walking a long distance, hence, you must be prepared with the
essential things that you need to bring when hiking. It is practical to put
everything in a backpack because it is easier to carry the load on your bag. Your
backpack should contain the following:
1. Food 5. Compass and map
2. Water 6. Raingear and clothes
3. First-aid kit 7. Matches or fire starter

Things that we need to remember when hiking:

The following are the essential things that we need to remember in hiking:
1. Avoid hiking alone. Hiking in a group is safer than hiking alone or picking a
partner or a friend who is an experienced hiker or backpacker. It’s safer to travel
with a friend or group of friends. Plus, an experienced hiker can share valuable
tips and advice about the wilderness.
2. Let others know your hiking locations and the date of your return. Keep
communication lines open. Since not all areas have a signal for your mobile
phones keep it handy in case of an emergency. Also, before you leave for your
trip, make sure that you have a contact person who knows all your emergency
details. Keep the contact person informed on your whereabouts at all times (if
possible). Leave your itinerary with the contact person.
3. Make sure that you walk on the marked trails.
4. Carry your rain gear and turn back if there is a bad weather.
5. Dress appropriately depending on the weather conditions and the place of the
activity. For the clothing;
 Wear moisture-wicking or “dry-fit” fabric because this absorbs sweat faster
than cotton and dries easily.
 Wear proper footwear, such as hiking shoes or trail runners, as most
sneakers or sandals may not have enough grip on their soles.
 Wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
 Always bring a rain jacket in case it rains.
 Wear comfortable pants, such as trekking pants or shorts. Jeans can be
heavy and quite hot if worn during hiking trips.
6. Stream water is not always safe to drink; you must carry enough water.
7. Bring a cell phone with you for you to provide details of your location and keep
the lines of communication open.
8. Plan your meals.
 Bring some trail mix (nuts, chocolate, jelly, cereal, etc.) to keep your energy
up throughout the day.
 If going on overnight hikes, plan your meals accordingly. If traveling with a
big group divide the team into smaller groups and assign a meal plan per
small group.
9. Wilderness ethics
 Pack out what you pack in. Practice the Leave No Trace principles by
picking up after your trash and bringing them home with you.
 Modulate your noise levels. Remember, some people go into the wilderness
to relax and unwind. Respect the privacy of other people.
 Be respectful and courteous to other visitors as well as to wildlife.
 Enjoy the view and the experience.

Common Mistakes that You Need to Avoid in Hiking

1. Keeping your hiking activity a secret- if no one knows your whereabouts, they
can’t rescue you in case of an emergency.
2. Hiking alone- make sure that you have someone with you who can help you in
case of emergency.
3. Staying away from the group- it is easier to find your back if you have someone
with you in case you get lost.
4. Wearing inappropriate attire- inappropriate attire may hinder your physical
activities. Wearing the right footwear is important too to avoid inconvenience or
injuries.
5. Forgetting to bring a survival kit- this will help a lot and may save your life in
case of emergency.
6. Ignoring what your body tells you- you should listen to your instinct. Drink water
whenever you’re thirsty. Take a rest when you feel tired.
For survival and saving yourself while hiking here are some tips:
1. If lost, stay put and make sure that you are in a safe area.
2. Create a shelter as your temporary camp.
3. Make sure that you stay dry and warm.
4. Be alert and make yourself visible.
5. Make sure to look for open space than staying in an area covered with trees.

2. Camping- a recreational activity in which one must spend a day or more living in
a tent or camp, usually away from home.
3. Biking- an outdoor recreation that may involve cross-country travel, downhill, or
track racing. It requires special equipment like a bicycle intended for selected
biking activity. This activity can help you improve endurance.
4. Orienteering- an outdoor recreation involving navigation skills like using a map
and a compass to select routes and navigate through an unfamiliar track or
course. This is usually a timed race in which groups of participants will have to
find points directed on the map in the fastest way they can.
SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF THE “LEAVE NO TRACE ETHICS WHEN DOING
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
1. Pan ahead.
2. Traveling and camping in a strong and sturdy area will keep you safe for the rest
of your outdoor activities.
3. Proper disposal of waste especially human waste, so that you do not
contaminate the water.
4. Leave what you find and make sure that you will not do anything with the
environment. Leave the rocks, artifacts, and other essential parts of the
environment for others to rediscover.
5. Respect wildlife and avoid disturbing them. Store food securely and keep the
food scrap away from animals. Also, avoid feeding the animals.
6. In case you go camping, you must avoid or minimize the impacts of campfires
such as the overuse of fires and depleting firewood sources.
7. Consider and respect other visitors as well.

Recreation should be done during leisure, the two types of recreation are indoor
and outdoor recreation. Some of the reasons for in participating recreational
activities are socializing, competition, exploration, and common interest.

Chess is a board game having 16 pieces of an army for each player to mate the
opponent’s king. India and Persia are noted to have early traces of chess history.

Lastly, there are rules in some outdoor recreation that one needs to follow
strictly for safety and environmental preservation.
