DEVISING YOUR COMPANY’S STRATEGY FOR

INDIA’S E-MOBILITY MARKET
A top management market & strategy consulting offering from EVNext
EVNext, the e-mobility consulting division of EAI, offers a focused consulting offering for the top
management of Indian companies keen on tapping into opportunities offered by the fast growing
Indian electric vehicle sector.

The Research & Consulting Team at EVNext comprises professionals from reputed institutions
such as the IITs and IIMs, and who have considerable acquaintance with the Indian electric
mobility sector.

RANGE OF OPPORTUNITIES
While India’s e-mobility movement has started accelerating in the recent past, experts agree that
it will take at least five years, or perhaps until 2025, when electric vehicles will start challenging
conventional ICE vehicles in India in terms of numbers.

For the auto industry however, 6-7 years is not a long time, and companies will need to start
strategizing today in order to be in a leadership position when the market reaches a growth
inflexion point.

Given the above, it is not surprising that many medium and large Indian companies, especially
those from auto OEM, auto component, electricals and battery sectors, have started their planning
for their e-mobility roadmap. Some like Hero (which invested in Ather Energy) or Greaves Cotton
(which acquired a controlling stake in Ampere Vehicles) have already started the process in an
active manner.

And this is where EAI, with its excellent understanding of the market and its contours, can be of
immense help to your company – to help you chart out an effective strategic e-mobility roadmap
for your company.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE BATTERY VALUE CHAIN

EVNext from EAI

ELECTRIC VEHICLE VALUE CHAIN

EVNext from EAI

Here’s a review of the opportunities from the EV value chain:

 Raw Materials - Li, Co and other raw materials for Li-ion

 Sub-components - Battery sub-components, Motor sub-components & Non-battery/Non-motor

sub-components

 Components - Battery cell manufacturing, Motor manufacturing & Non-battery/Non-motor

component production

 Assembly/OEM - Battery assembly, Vehicle assembly

 EV Charging Infra - Charging infra components, Charging infra operations

 EV Use & End of Life - Vehicle sales, Vehicle use, Vehicle disposal

Given the nature of the electric vehicle sector, an effective strategy will differ significantly from one
company to another. An effective strategy should not only build upon your tangible strengths and
assets (physical plant and machinery, distribution, customer base…), but also intangible assets
(your company’s vision, your company’s core competence areas within your operational value
chain…).

Such a plan should also take into account the trends in the entire ecosystem of e-mobility in specific
and mobility in general – for instance, the advent of connected and autonomous vehicles, the
emergence of a start-up and innovation culture in the country, and the policies and regulations of
both India as well as other key countries.

EAI’s EVNext team can assist you in assimilating all of the above to provide your top management
with a strategy that is optimized for your firm’s vision, aspirations and strengths.

ty segments.

TP Energy Group’s mission is to become a leading supplier of battery grade Lithium, Cobalt and
Graphite from a global suite of mineral assets using new extraction technologies. The client owns large
land areas in Australia and Argentina bearing deposits of Lithium, Cobalt & Graphite.

As India is a high potential market for electric vehicles, the client was keen on getting a better under-
standing of the Indian EV market and the key players, with the objective of approaching them as
prospective customers of Lithium. Lithium can be used to make Li-ion battery, the most prominent type
of battery used in electric vehicles today.

EAI’s EVNext team divided the assignment into two stages. In the first stage, we provided a reality
check of the Indian EV sector to the client and showed to them how the market was in a nascent state,
and more so with respect to Li-ion battery cell making. With these presentations, we enabled the client
to understand that while India had the potential to be a large buyer of Lithium in future, the potential
for such purchase until about 2020 was quite limited.

All the same, as such metal sourcing projects were usually of a long term nature, the client was keen
to start establishing relationships with large Indian companies that could be future prospects. The
EVNext team assisted the client in identifying about 10 such companies, interacted with the top man-
agement of these companies and introduced them to the client.
