Dear Liv

I hope all’s well with you. I’m sorry not to have written for so long but, as you can
imagine, I’ve been very busy since I arrived here. I had to find a flat and then to become
settled at work before I could think about other things.

Anyway, I’ve now got a place to live. It’s an apartment in one of the oldest parts of Paris –
near Montmartre – and it feels very French and very authentic. It has a spare room, so if
you ever want to come and stay, just let me know. The only problem is that it’s not very
near the office. I have to catch two different trains to reach work every day. The people in
the office are nice, but the way of working feels very different. You can’t persuade

Life Upper Intermediate ©National Geographic Learning 6

someone to do something without having a series of meetings and long discussions. I’m
finding it pretty exhausting.

Life My plan is to give it six months and see if it becomes any easier. Or if I become more
French in my working habits! If it doesn’t work out, I’ll ask for a transfer back to the
Netherlands. Do pass on my news to everyone there when you receive this and give them
my love. I’ll write again soon.

All the best,

Sophie

‘Help,’ said Nicky. ‘This slope is too steep. I can’t stop.’ ‘What is she complaining about
now?’ Ian said to himself, but then he looked up to see Nicky disappearing over the edge
of the hill. He moved forward to the point where she had disappeared and looked down.
Nicky was about 25 metres down the slope, on her back and travelling very fast. At the
bottom he could see some sharp rocks. ‘Grab something’ he said but it was too late. She
was already going too fast. Ian went after her, half-running, half-falling down the slope.
‘Don’t worry’ he said, I’m coming. Nicky was now 20 metres from the rocks. At the last
minute, she struck a bush and rolled to a stop just above the rocks. ‘Ouch’, she said, ‘that
hurt’. Ian made his way down the last part of the slope. ‘Not as much as if you had hit
those rocks’, he suggested.
