All Hail, Student Democracy! 788 students took part in the decisionmaking in may be one of the most controversial turning points in UEPL history (if it is legal to over-dramatize what happened that morning). The students hardly had any idea what the assembly was about minutes before it started and what in the world were the UEP-Main folks in pseudo-formal outfits doing in the campus. But when the issue was posed, opinions were raised as well as eyebrows.
Amid the murmur of a random class of students from all colleges, in the confusion of opinions, questions, gossip and nonsense chitchat, Prof. Obleopas have succeeded in elaborating the issue guided by her restating why there was a resolution of changing the July elections to March (and that Rino Sabarre, a former student regent, proposed of this long ago to the BOR and was approved and that when the USC have already concurred and have had the Dean of Student Affairs sign for OK but
One sophomore student strutted down the aisle to announce that she favors having special elections in July and regular elections in March and added that some officers do not deserve their positions. Another student in the senior year favored in retaining the July elections and reasoned that two elections in a school year will only become a financial burden since almost all school expenditure are picked from students pockets. Prof. Obleopas explained that July elections and March elections in one school year will only happen once and July officers will serve as transition officers to pave the way for the March elections. There was one inquiry that if the elections would be moved to March, what would happen if the student who is elected failed to enroll the next semester? Joan Alvaiz (current student regent and FSC President) emphasized that in taking to consideration that kind of responsibility, the student must contemplate before deciding to run. Of course, representing the student sector is not for fame or selfish gain since the essence of student leadership is serving your fellow students. She advised that if the student wishes to run, he/she must be financially capable and assure that next semester he/she will hang around (at least, this was what she pointed out). None among those students who challenged the microphone ever picked option #3 (if interpretations are appropriate to be expressed in this feature, this could mean none of them desired the current officers to extend their terms or none wanted to speak out afraid to be criticized
The concept of liberty to students is that they have the right to participate in all affairs that concerns them. They have the right to express, to choose, to join and get involved, to comment, to suggest, to oppose and even react vehemently to any matter as long as it does not violate human rights. That is why, to further democratize this liberty about student leadership (particularly the concerns in the USC), Prof. Romula Obleopas (in charge of the University Publication and Media Affairs in UEP) with the FSC (Federation of Student Councils) and the Pillar (UEP student publication), offered the students three options upon which date shall they favor to have the USC elections: (1) to have the elections in July; (2) to have special elections in July but have the regular elections in March; or (3) to have no special elections but have the regular elections in March. (In February 2005, a resolution was proposed to move the July elections to March because there was an inability of the officers to meet during semester and summer vacations, no one represents for the student sector in summer, and if the officerparticularly in the FSCis a senior, he/she is nullified when he/she graduates and may no longer represent the student sector in BOR meetings which occasionally takes place on summer periods.)
still they had the elections in July), she and the student body had resolved to deal with it once and for all. She has had presented the pros and cons of each option cautious not to miss any detail in that she might be misunderstood. She even suggested of not speaking in the L2 (English language) anymore since they were all Filipinos but continued speaking it almost all the way. The advantage of having the July elections (45 days after the first day of classes) is that soon after the enrolment the students can exercise their right to vote. However, new students will have fewer opportunities in assessing the student leaders who will run. This may also disrupt classes since school has just started but according to Prof. Obleopas [humorously] elections would not at all disrupt classes since students who are in classes would prefer to be disrupted. On the other hand, the advantages of March elections (45 days before the end of classes), the students will have almost the school year to assess the student leaders even it would take months before they could ever vote. For the candidates, they may have enough time to prepare for the elections and, if elected, they will have ample time to plan for activities for the next school year and develop harmonious relationship among the officers. However, students in their senior year are not eligible to run and students are preparing for their final examinations. Tensions evidently heated up as the students raise their opinions and take sides and share their views. Students presented their arguments when that portion actually was intended to make inquiries about the matter. The students advocated the concept of freedom of expression and liberty was in the air.
The concept of liberty to students is that they have the right to participate in all affairs that concerns them.
or they just love July for traditions sake). After all that pre-luncheon sort-of-debate, everyone is decided and hungry to cast their votes. Students in white, yellow, tangerine, cream, dark and light blue clustered outside the P.E. Center in assorted files eager to sign so that it can finally be done with. The UEP-Main student representatives assisted in conducting this event. There were three sheets of paper on tables, each inscribed with MARCH, JULY AND MARCH and JULY. Everyones goal was to put their names on it and sign and take off so they may have their lunch. It was a mass of different minds and standpoints, and for libertys sake, they filled the pathways to a future of student leadership they want to see. On Tuesday, June 28, 2011, four days after the referendum, the votes were tallied. This was the moment the students have all been waiting for. And after constant discussions and selfinduced prophesies of what will be the result, USC President Georgette Irinco with Georgie Parane (OSA-UEP Laoang), came back to the campus from UEP-Main, their faces relieved in such political grace, with the copy of the summary of the referendum result. July regular elections won the favor of the students and Laoang greatly constituted the grand total of votes. Majority wins.

FEATURE / NEWS people in college. You should try to be friends with a lot of different people so you can learn about them. Next, Id like to share with you the idea of bringing your favorite stuff or gaddget particularly on the first two weeks of classes. Why? Well, its because the first two weeks of classes are the most boring weeks. Aside from the fact that usually most of the classes on those days are not yet set on a regular schedule, you only know few people and you dont have any friends yet to get along with. So the best thing you can do is to busy yourself with an your own stuff like cell phones, laptop, I IPod, PSP or anything that can prevent boredom to rule over you. By Leona Grace Mendoza Do you remember when you were a freshman, feeling awkward and out of place? Well, here I am to tell you about the dos and donts of the freshman year. There are five very important things you should make sure do: make friends friends; bring with you your own favorite stuff or gadgets; memorize your schedule; dont put all your books in your backpacks; and ; early develop an effective study habit. The first thing Id like to talk about is making friends. In order to make friends I . highly advice you to join clubs, orgs or sports teams which you are interested in so you can meet people who have same interests as you. This will also break the ice when you first meet them because of the fact that both of you are sharing the same interests. Another way to make friends is to be open to new people and new ideas b because there are a lot of various types of from page 3 You are here [to] develop
and when you are not busy in school works but remember to have discipline on using it. The third thing I want to tell you is about memorizing your schedule. This is . important so you dont look like a freshhman. If you memorize your schedule you can manage your own time. You wont be panicking in the hallways just to get to your t class at the exact time. Another reason to remember your schedule is that you can have more time to socialize and get to know your new classmates. Next, Id like to talk to you about your backpack. You should buy a small but faashionable backpack. Remember, you are no longer a high school student so you dont need to stuff all your books inside
Lack of practice. She advised everyone to get a partner or a best friend to talk with in English and also speak the language at home. She also said that students should not just concentrate on academics but also on extracurricular activities like dancing and singing clubs and other organizations to develop their total personality. Since you are now a part of this family, see to it that you will not forget what you promised to your parents that youre going to [in return] give them high grades that after four years, after five years, you can give your diploma to your par-

So whenever you are in the classroom, see to it that you get to the fu fullest... the ideas that are being discussed by your i instructors. Hwag kayong t tulog nang tulog and when youre at home see to it that you will have in mind, recall what has been discusse by discussed your teachers, in other words, develop a good study habit. MORE THAN A NIGHTMARE:
[This story is just a product of the writers imagination. Any similar situation must be a mere coincidence]
Kriing!! Kriing!! Kriiiiing!! Loud words came out of my cell phone as it vibrated to wake me up from my crazy subconscious world. (Yawn!) Whoa! I almost forgot... its the last day of enrolment, and I havent had my registration form assessed at the accounting office. Now is my last chance. I have to accomplish this today or else I will be charged for my late registration on Monday. Its okay if I wont be able to pay at the cashier today; my main target is to get my fees assessed. Its 4 oclock already... and my eyes said, hoy! Katurog pa gad! I cant help it. I still felt sleepy. So I went back to bed and... Zzzzzzzzzzzz... I heard some noises, noises that came from a crowd. I went out to check and to my surprise, our yard was filled with lots of people. All of them fell in line towards... uh... what were they falling in line for? psst! Ananu an iyo ginpipilahan? I said. The guy turned to me as I talked. I was shocked to see his face. It was terrifying like those faces of kill-

bath. I was rushing that I wasnt able to eat my breakfast, brush my teeth, and do other grooming rituals. It was seven oclock when I arrived at school. Shocked upon seeing the administration building filled with over a hundred people, I ran as fast as I could to catch up with the line. Every minute the numbers would increase. If I were a little bit later than 7 oclock, the place would have been filled with even more students. The last one on the line was me. I was quite worried that my form was not meant to be assessed that day with people that many. But... I cant stop now since Ive already gone this far. Why should I waste it? So I waited... and waited... I saw no familiar faces in the vicinity, so I was silent and alone. I started thinking. I remembered my dream earlier that morning. I was bothered with the horrible faces I saw... what if it was truethat the people here before me looked like psycho killers?... ah! What a lousy thought... its just a dream anyway... but although it was a dream, I cant help thinking about it. As I was silently standing, waiting for my time (which looked like it was impossible to come), I heard my stomach growl. I was hungry. I should have eaten before I got there. Oh well, Ill just ignore it... but after some time, it growled again. This time it felt like going down. Suddenly, I felt like I was being called by nature. It growled again... then I realized... it was number two!! Oh, what a great luck! I did my best just to stop it. I cant go right now Im on the line! If I go, then the chances of my being assessed will be even smaller. So I decided not to heed the call Ohmy stomach is aching. I feel like its going out. So I walked out of the line and out of the campus as fast as I could. As I rode the tricycle home, I felt something going out. I farted. The cool wind that was blowing on me gave me goose bumps. My sweat felt so cold and icky and I felt so unwell. Arriving home, I dashed into the comfort room and there, I had an eruption and oh, it felt so good! I wanted to go back to school, hoping that my goal would still be attained but my stomach was still aching. So I decided to stay, assuming that there would be incoming eruptions other than the recent one. I changed clothes, sat on the couch, and watched TV. Every word that came out of the television was just a mere sound to my ears. I couldnt help thinking about what had happened. Was it really my faultmy fault that our schedule of enrolment happened to be the last two days of the official registration period? But I couldnt blame the administration for that. They just wanted the enrolment to be systematic thats why they have scheduled certain enrolment days for every class. As for me, Im just one of the unlucky ones. Just one of those who experienced a situation so bad so bad, that its more than a nightmare How I wish none of this ever happened.

Without hearing a word from the guy, I just turned away and went back to our house. As I paced, I noticed that the people in line were wearing the same faces as that of the two guys I had seen. It terrified me so much, that I ran as fast as I could towards our house. I went in and I saw my mom busy doing something in the kitchen. I approached her and she turned to me. The votes have been tallied; the results are in; new officers officerselect will be inducted on the 22 of July. But it was not hard 22nd to choose since there was only one party that selected itself for the position. The essence of election is choosing two or more people who desire for any position and it is the job of the voter to put the name of his bet on the ballot. He will prompt himself in deciding between two exchanging forces that may impact his life in the future and he will assess who among them is the best. What happened in the last election is not the kind of election that explains this concept. Although we acclaim the willingness of the candidates to serve and to lead, the student voters lacked the freedom to choose. Choosing is the most essential aspect that we have. It determines which way we go, the pathways where we lead ourselvesour yeas and nays, fight and flight, left and our right and even life and death. This defines us as people who have LIBERTY. Having no choices choiceslike this recent electionviolated this violated liberty. If liberty had rights, the culprit would have been put to erty. jail. But who is the culprit? Not the official candidates, not the COMSELEC, not even those who have failed to file their COCs but US. US who have wavered in strength to serve though we have capabilities of leading but we are afraid. apabilities US who have to wait till the eleventh hour to decide whether we pass or shoot. US who have to be forced into responsibilities though we lack courage and preparation. US who have guts to complain but are the ones who should be mocked. US, the people of this institution. Next year, though we, ourselves have chosen July elections, let us prepare ourselves for this battle a battle within us battlea between motives for student service or for mere fame. Being a student leader i not a they-serve-you position but rather is you the opposite. Student, open those eyes.
Sana pinayagan na lang ang party na di nakapasok sa official list of candidates kasi di naman to masyadong parang sa tunay na eleksyon. Kemekeme la.

O kay dilim! Nangangapat walang maaninagan!
