OPERATION. THUNDERBOLT

“Hey, somebody should teach those guys to play
football!” yells Leatherneck. “Don’t they know
this is the Super Bowl?”
The recreation room aboard the U.S.S.
Flagg buzzes with football talk as the men watch
the big game being televised from New Orleans.
_ The Super Bowl is about the most exciting thing ~
that’s happened since you came aboard the
giant G.I. Joe aircraft carrier as a new member
of the Joe Team.
“Bet you next week’s salary that your team
doesn’t score again,” Shipwreck goads Leather-
neck.
“You're on, seaweed breath,” growls Leath-
erneck. “Get your wallet ready!”
Suddenly all eyes are riveted on the TV set.
eA huge bolt of lightning has struck the fifty-
yard line, hurling the players to the ground. In
seconds the electricity crackles along the electric
wires around the stadium.
The screams of the panicked crowd are
_ heard over the air as the sportscaster nervously
describes the scene. “A strange bolt of electricity
_is traveling through the stad—”
KABOOM! There is a huge explosion—
_ and then your TV set goes black.

Suddenly the PA system of the rec room
crackles with a message from Duke. “All per-
sonnel with X-15 military clearance report to
the briefing room. Situation critical.”
) You, Shipwreck, and Leatherneck run to-
ward the briefing room. “Never a dull moment
around here,” Leatherneck mutters.
When you reach the briefing room, Hawk,
the G.I. Joe Commander, has already begun his
briefing. He interrupts himself to introduce you
to the members of the squad: Duke, the G.I.
Joe Team’s top sergeant; Roadblock, a heavy-
weapons specialist; Recondo, a jungle infantry- —
man; Low-Light, a night spotter; Cutter,
operator of the hovercraft; Deep-Six, a diver;
and, of course, you already know Shipwreck
and Leatherneck. “Men,” Hawk says, turning to
you, “I’d like to introduce the newest member
of our team. This is Zapper, a whiz with elec-
tronics.”
Introductions completed, Hawk turns to a
large map of the United States. Using a heavy
marker, he circles some major cities around the
country.
“Fantastic,” Leatherneck whispers to you
sarcastically. “Just what I wanted ...a geography
lesson.”
You give him a halfhearted grin. You’ve
noticed that Hawk has just circled the city of
New Orleans!

“We have a very important mission here,”
Hawk explains. “The areas I’ve circled repre-
sent strategic locations that have somehow been
hit by a gleaming flash of light from the sky re-
sembling a bolt of lightning which caused an ex-
plosion.”
As the other members of the G.I. Joe Team
stir, Hawk continues. “According to Intelli-
gence, we were able to detect that the last strike,
the one that hit New Orleans, came from one of
our biggest communications satellites.”
“Hey, that’s probably what knocked out the
Super Bowl!” Leatherneck shouts.
“Well, what do you know,” Hawk offers.
“There is a brain hiding in all that muscle.”
Hawk waits for the laughter to die down
before he continues with the briefing. “Fortu-
nately we were able to pinpoint the satellite’s last
position. It seems that it was given its command
from an oil rig just offshore from a suspected
COBRA base.”
Hawk shuts the light off, lowers a screen,
and begins showing slides of the oil rig from
different angles. “We sent a small recon patrol
to the rig,” he continues, “and they discovered
sophisticated electronics systems housed on it.
It’s possible that those systems are capable of
controlling our communications satellites. If so,
__ COBRA can attack anywhere in the world!”

“Let's go in and blow that rig sky high!” —
shouts Roadblock.
“T have a better idea,’ Hawk announces.
“T’ve decided on a two-pronged attack. The first —
part of my plan involves searching out COBRA
headquarters near the rig. We think there’s a
base of operations other than the rig and, Duke,
I want you to lead a team inland through the ©
jungle to find it. Take Low-Light, Roadblock, —
and Leatherneck with you.
“The second part of my plan calls for infil-
trating the rig. I want to make sure that its
operations are shut down and no harm can ~
come to our satellites—or any cities—before we |
take out that rig. Cutter, Deep-Six, Recondo,
and Shipwreck—I want you to form the team —
that heads for the rig.”
“What do you think COBRA is trying to
do?” you ask.
“My hunch is that they’re testing out some
new system and when they've perfected it, |
COBRA will try for global domination.”
“Well, it’s our job to stop them!” you shout. —
Then you realize that you haven’t been given an
assignment.
“Where should I go, sir?” you ask.
“Your know-how will be useful on either
mission,” Hawk answers. “Got a preference?”

Your eyes open wide as you approach the
eae
ATi eip Joe flying submarine, the S.H.A.R.C. Deep-
_ Six, the pilot of the craft, is busy with last-
minute preparations. His head is buried near
the torpedo tubes, so he is unaware of your
presence.
“How soon before we shove off?” you ask.
Deep-Six stands up, wipes his brow, and
checks you out. “Fantastic,” he says sarcastically.
“Probably the biggest mission of my life and I
get assigned a rookie.”
“I might come in handy,” you say.
“Sure you might. When we submerge, I can
use you for ballast,” Deep-Six says, laughing.
Hawk comes over and hands you an enve-
lope. “Zapper, here’s the latest report from In-
telligence. COBRA’s electronic systems are more
_ complicated than we first thought. Think you
can handle it?”
You open the envelope and peruse its con-
tents. “I thought they’d have something like
this—a simple relay transfer coupled with a
thermosensitive overlap program.” Looking at
an impressed Deep-Six, you tell Hawk, “If
Deep-Six can get us there, this will be as easy as
changing a light bulb!”
Motioning toward the S.H.A.R.C.’s open
door, Deep-Six bows deeply, gestures inside,
__ and says, “After you, Mr. Whiz Kid of the elec-
tronics world.”

The alarm still blares through the oil rig. |
“If that horn is in our honor,” says Deep-Six,
“we should get to the control room— pronto.”
“TJ don’t think so,” you disagree, studying
the sign. “That sign looks tailor-made to trap
any unauthorized personnel. The paint’s not
even dry. Let’s take the unmarked passage.”
The hallway winds around the rig. Finally
it ends at an elevator door. You press the button
and the metal doors open immediately. The ele-
vator is made of glass and is attached to one of
the outside supports of the rig.
“Going down?” Deep-Six asks, stepping
into the elevator.
“Certainly,” you reply.
Deep-Six pushes the down button and the
elevator descends rapidly. Soon you are under-
water. “This must be strong glass to withstand ~
the pressure of the ocean,” Deep-Six observes.
“And look at that unit pumping in fresh air!”
“Tl bet this takes us to the glass hallway we
saw when we pulled up in the S.H.A.R.C.,” you
surmise. And right you are! When the elevator
stops, the two of you step into the underwater
glass hallway. Fish swim all around you. You
walk to the end, look out at the ocean bottom,
and see a series of translucent glass domes.
“I'd bet anything that each one of those —
domes houses a satellite dish,” you conjecture.
“I think we’ve just discovered how COBRA is
manipulating those outer space satellites.”

“Each one of those bubble-like enclosures ©

“So what?” Deep-Six says. “I’ve got cable
TV at home and I don’t need an antenna.”
“Not that kind of antenna, ace. These are
transmitting and receiving dishes. From what I
know of electronics I’d bet my life that the real
COBRA communications command center has
to be right here on this rig—and very close to
those bubbles.”
“It’s probably somewhere off that hallway
we just came through,” observes Deep-Six.
“Let’s get back up there and try to find it.”
You run back down the glass hallway and |
take the elevator up. Now what? Suddenly you
hear a humming sound coming from one of the |
rooms off the hallway. Staying close to the wall, |
you make your way to the door and push it |
open ever so slightly. |
“There it is,” you whisper to Deep-Six. |
“Look at all those computers. They have great |
stuff in there!” |
“That great stuff is there to help COBRA |
rule the world,” Deep-Six reminds you. “There |
are only a few guards, so let’s see what we can |
do about getting rid of them.”
“IT don’t think that’s a good—” Your sen- |
tence trails off when you realize you're talking —
to yourself. Deep-Six has impetuously charged
into the room and is waving his gun at the |
guards.

you volunteer to join Duke’s jungle-hunt team.

about, getting the G.I. Joe Skystrikers ready for
launch. You walk over to Duke, who is giving
assignments to the other members of the team.
“Zapper,” Duke says as he turns to you. —
“I’m teaming you up with Leatherneck.”
“Ahhh!” Leatherneck groans. “I don’t want
to be a nursemaid to no greenhorn.”
You shoot Leatherneck a dirty look. You’re
not so sure you're thrilled about being part-
nered with this crude dude, either.
“Zapper may be green,” Duke says in de--
fense of you, “but he just might be the most im- |

here who knows enough about electronics to
short-circuit COBRA’s plot.”

You back out the door and close it behind

Pulling Leatherneck aside, you say, “Look,

I don’t know about you, but I'd feel kind of silly —
buzzing around that rig if COBRA’s electronics
center is hidden somewhere in the jungle.”
“Fine with me, Zap,” Leatherneck replies.
“I feel more at home in the jungle anyway.”
The two of you tell Duke that you’d rather
search the inland area for COBRA’s base. He
agrees that your electronics know-how would be —
put to best use that way. |
You climb into the cockpit of the Skystriker _
and radio Duke that you’re set for launch. Sit- _
ting behind you, Leatherneck says, “You know, _
Zap, for a marine, I’m doing a lot of time on the
water and in the air.” ]
You turn around and reply, “Relax, buddy, |
you'll get your land legs as soon as we sit this|
baby down on the runway.”
The flight coordinator waves his sigoanl|
flags. Soon you rev the mighty engines of the |
Skystriker, barely able to keep it from soaring |
down the runway. Once the other two Sky-.
strikers are set, the coordinator motions you to !
take off. The powerful jet engines at full throt-
tle pin Leatherneck and you to your seats. Sec- |
onds later the Skystriker zooms off the fight:

As soon as the other Skystrikers take off,

signals the last Skystriker to peel off to buzz the

Soon Duke is flying right next to you, and
together you soar over the sandy shoreline.
Over the intercom you hear Duke order, “Zap-
per, let’s stay close to the treetops to keep out
of COBRA'’s radar.”
. “Affirmative,” you reply as you push down
on the control stick. Seconds later you are skim-
_ ming the tops of the mainland’s tall trees.
“Hey, aren’t we cutting this kind of close?”
yells Leatherneck from the rear. “I mean, I’m
no botanist, but I’d guess we’re doing a good job
__ of pruning these trees.”
& Laughing, you tell Leatherneck, “The lower

es “In that case, Zap,” says Leatherneck,

After thinking it over for a moment, —
COBRA Commander says, “Well, at least you —
have the good sense to want to stay alive. I ad-
mire that.” COBRA Commander paces back
and forth, as if thinking. Then he turns and
faces you. “I’ll take you on for a trial period, but
if you try anything out of the ordinary, I’ll per-
sonally chop your head off.”
It’s not exactly the warmest welcome in the
world, but it'll have to do. COBRA Commander
then instructs you on their complicated satellite
control systems, including the cities targeted for
immediate destruction. “Once we hit those
cities, the rest of the world will beg for mercy,”
he says.
From the back of the room, a voice asks,
“How do you like my new toy?” Spinning
around, you recognize a face you saw during
your intelligence briefing back on the Flagg. It’s
the evil arms supplier, Destro! i
“It’s very impressive, Destro,” you say. “I |
can’t wait to see it in action.” |
“Soon enough,” he replies proudly, “soon
enough. But first, let me explain the inner
workings of the unit.”

In Destro’s private quarters he talks about
the project. “So. you see, Zapper,” he says, “the —

lite’s own internal pack.” :
Of course you’re interested in the elec-
tronics, but you’d rather be reaching across the
table and strangling Destro. Instead, you con-
tinue to play along.
Surprisingly, Destro leans over and says,
“Zapper, I feel I can trust you. I think that—
COBRA Commander is planning to kill me as
soon as my work here is finished.”
“Why would he want to do that?” you ask.
“Because I can always use my knowledge of _
the system to blackmail him,” Destro says. “Not
that I’d ever do that, of course.”
“Of course,” you say with disbelief.
“So I’m pleading with you to help me sabo- |
tage the scheme and escape. In return, I'll help |
your friends get out of the compound. Will you |
help me?” |

Descending a set of metal stairs, Destro
_ leads you to a highly sophisticated transmission

see several blinking lights.
“Those twinkling lights,” Destro says, “rep-
resent the next five cities we’ve targeted for
blasting. As you can see, we’ve spread it out all
over the globe.”
“COBRA’s plot—I mean, our plot—should
be very successful,” you add.
“As they say in the old song,” Destro re-
_ marks, laughing, “we'll have the whole world in
~ our hands.”
During the next hour, Destro shares all the
a secret inner workings of the system, including
how to direct the potent energy beam from the
satellites.
After you’ve shown him your expertise
_ with the machine, he leaves, saying, “Well, Zap-
_ per, you certainly learn quickly. I tell you what.
As a reward, I'll let you program the blast that
_ will bring Washington, D.C., to its knees.”
He watches as you begin to punch in the
necessary data. Convinced that you can handle
it, he says, “I’m going topside to get some fresh
_air. If you need me, just holler.”
“You'll be hollering soon enough,” you
mutter to yourself as Destro leaves.
“Thank you for your kind words, Com--
mander,” says the arms supplier, Destro. “But if
you hadn’t intercepted that G.I. Joe hovercraft,
I’m afraid our mission would have failed.”
“Blowing that ship out of the water made
my day,” COBRA Commander chuckles. “And
when I pull this detonating switch in ten min-
utes, the party will really begin.”
You let the door close and say to Recondo,
“I don’t think we have a shot at overpowering
them, but by the looks of the control panel, I
might be able to put the fix on their system
from an outside source.” |
You lead Recondo into a shaftway that runs
around the COBRA communications center.
Looking down, you see a COBRA guard patrol-
ling an area in front of a box labeled AUXILIARY
POWER.
“We've got to get by him,” you whisper.
“Leave him to me,” Recondo replies. He si- |
lently lowers himself from the shaftway. Stand-
ing in the shadows, Recondo calls out, “Hey, pal, |
got a light?” |
The COBRA guard walks over to him, say-
ing, “You know you're not supposed to smoke |
down here.” a ||
Recondo leaps out and brings the butt of
his M-16 down on the guard’s shoulders. As the |
guard crumples to the floor, Recondo says,
“That’s one way to give up smoking.”

Duke points to a COBRA Ferret aban-

We'll make up for lost time if we can ride that
Ferret through the jungle.”
You get to work splicing a frayed wire that

You and the others pile onto the Ferret and
ride through the jungle. “Follow those tire
tracks there,” Duke orders, pointing ahead.
“They should lead us right to the COBRA
base.”
Duke is right. Soon a COBRA guard tower
looms ahead. Obviously a COBRA Ferret in the
jungle is not an unusual sight, since the guards
don’t react to your approach. “Grab hold of that
missile launcher,” Duke orders Roadblock. “Aim
her right at the guard tower.”
When you are within fifty yards of the en-

you. One of them sounds the alarm just as
Roadblock fires the missile. It scores a direct hit

Duke and the others are shocked that
you've turned traitor. Leatherneck grabs you in
a headlock and roars, but the Crimson Guard
enters the cell and pulls him off you.
As he yanks you out of the cell, the Crim-
son Guard tells his partner to watch you and the
others while he tells COBRA Commander of
your offer.
After he leaves, you stand outside the jail
cell with the one remaining guard. Do you jump
him and try to escape? Or would it be wiser to
wait for COBRA Commander’s response to
your proposal?

Looks like your little charade has just come
to an end. COBRA guards approach you men-
acingly. “Okay, guys, so I was kidding,” you say.
“Can’t you take a joke?”
Apparently not. No one laughs.
“Hold it!” yells Deep-Six. He waves a hand
grenade over his head. “One more move from
any of you and everybody gets it,” he threatens.
“J don’t care if I blow myself up in the process!”
You look at the COBRA guards. “He
means it,” you tell them. “He’s a real animal.”
Now you have an important decision to
make. Should you set COBRA’s electronic satel-
lite relay in motion now—yjust to make sure it
really blows? If you do that, you may be caught
in the explosion yourself. |
On the other hand, maybe it would be bet-
ter to concentrate on escaping from the rig.
COBRA will probably go ahead with their plot
and blow themselves up eventually anyway.
What do you do? .

You look at Leatherneck. “What do you
say?” you ask-him. “Want to go for it?”
Leatherneck’s hard-set face bursts into a
smile. “Okay, Zapper!” he yells. “Count us in,
Duke. We’re the dream team who're going to
buzz that rig!”
So the plan is set. Duke will fly the first
Skystriker alone. He will be followed by Low-
Light and Roadblock in the second Striker.
You'll take off last with Leatherneck as your co-
pilot.
When all three Skystrikers are in the air,
Duke radios you. “Come in, Zapper. Prepare to
break formation at exactly zero eight-hundred
and head twenty degrees for the rig.”
“Check. How long should we keep up the
diversion?” you respond.
“We'll radio when the two Strikers have ar-
rived at their destination. Then return to the
Flagg or follow us, whichever seems most sensi-
ble at the time. Good luck. Over.”
“Thanks. We'll need it. Over.”
Moments later you steer your Skystriker
away from the others. You have only ten min-
utes to revel in the glory of piloting a Skystriker
on a dangerous mission. As you approach the
oil rig three COBRA Assault System Pods
(A.S.P.s) enter your airspace.
“Well, lookie here,” says Leatherneck.

Don’t try to do it all yourself.”
“IT wouldn’t think of cutting you out of the
fun, Duke,” you laughingly reply.
Before entering the elevator you make a
quick survey of your electronic equipment.
Duke hands you a small pistol and says, “Keep
this under your shirt. If COBRA catches you,
they'll surely take away your rifle.”
You step into the elevator, turn around,

“I think I can set this thing down on that

“Anything you say,” says Leatherneck, pull-

“We’re not finished yet!” you proclaim
courageously—hoping that you know what
you're talking about. The ground is getting
closer with every passing second. You are able to
level out the plane and lower your landing gear.
So far, so good.
You hit the ground! You skid. “Hang on to
your helmet!” you cry as the Skystriker goes into
a spin. You hold your breath. ...
Eventually the Skystriker comes to rest with
its nose buried in the jungle trees that line the
airstrip. “You can open your eyes now,” you tell
Leatherneck. “The bird is in the nest.”
Leatherneck climbs out of the jet and sur-
ee: veys the damage. “I hope we find the other
guys, because this baby isn’t going anywhere.
_ Our fuel line is almost snapped in two.”
Suddenly you hear a grinding noise
around you. You spin around and see four.
COBRA rocket launchers spring out of hidden
silos flanking the runway.
You and Leatherneck hit the ground.

“Now we know the purpose of this runway,”

Duke’s Skystriker flies into view as you
speak. Behind him is the third Skystriker, which
has apparently finished buzzing the oil rig.
There’s no way to warn them. You can only
watch helplessly as the COBRA rockets are
launched and soar toward the unsuspecting
Skystrikers. Duke’s jet takes a direct hit in the
engine. Before he can bail out—KABLAM!—his
Skystriker explodes.
The other Striker, flown by Low-Light,
tries to veer off, but a heat-seeking rocket
catches up to it. Its tail bursts into flame. With a
deafening whistle, the Skystriker dives into the
ocean.
Quiet falls over the area. You turn to
Leatherneck. “We’re on our own now, buddy,”
you Say sadly. “It’s up to us.”
Leatherneck is pale from what he’s just wit-_
nessed. You didn’t think this seasoned soldier
had a sentimental bone in his body, but now you
see a tear in his eye. Then his face turns a fiery
red. “Now I’m mad,” he growls.
Suddenly, from out of the jungle come
twenty COBRAS with their guns pointed
straight at you. Slowly you and Leatherneck

“4 You and Leatherneck are marched directly

about a mile from the runway.
You are thrown into a room with a dirt
floor and no windows. The two COBRA guards
stare at you silently.
You are there for more than an hour when
the door is jerked open. The sudden light hurts
your eyes, but you see that a woman has come
into the room.
“Aah, Leatherneck,” says the woman in the
black jumpsuit, “how very nice to see you again,
especially under these circumstances.”
“Sorry I can’t say the same about you, Bar-

So this is the Baroness you’ve heard so

brilliant military mind—and a few bats in her

“We’re the only two,” you answer her

“Thanks,” you say, checking your radar

The brief flight training that you received

As you're deciding what to do a COBRA

smoke streams out of the side of your plane.
“What the heck was that?” asks Leatherneck.
“I think they’re crashing our party,” you

COBRAS charge your group. Leaping off
_ the Ferret, you and the others form a circle to
defend yourselves against their fire. In this for-

compound and then into the main building.
You bolt the big door behind you—but it’s only
a matter of minutes before the COBRAS will
smash through.
This is your chance to crush the COBRA
plot. You are in the room that houses their elec-
tronics equipment. You run to a huge computer
board on the far wall.
“I can short-circuit it,” you tell Duke, “but
it will take about fifteen minutes.”
Just then the door comes crashing down
and COBRA fire whistles over your head. “No
time!” Duke yells. “Blow it up!”
You and Leatherneck set the timed explo-
sives while Roadblock, Duke, and Low-Light
keep COBRA at bay with a spray of machine-
gun fire.
“Detonators set!” you yell to Duke. Now,
how do you get out of here? You can’t charge

“Out we go!” cries Leatherneck, hurling
himself through the plate-glass window behind

the flight deck where the hovercraft—called the

“Welcome to the navy, boys!” yells Ship-

You and Deep-Six swim up to the surface

With increasing speed, you direct your

“We're hit!” Leatherneck yells.

Hearing some more explosions, you look
down at the ground and see that the COBRA

the intercom. “Good thing I decided to ride
shotgun. We really surprised those guys.”
Making one more pass over the area, you
see the remains of COBRA’s rocket bunkers and
COBRAS fleeing into the jungle for cover.
As you fly alongside Duke, your jets are
soon joined by the third Skystriker, containing
Roadblock and Low-Light.
“That oil rig was nothin’ but a plain old oil
rig,” Roadblock says over the radio. “We figured
it'd be more fun linking up with you guys.”
As the three Skystrikers clear another
mountain range, Duke spots an alternate air-
strip. After making a few flight passes to make
sure it’s safe, the three jets land.
Once you’ve landed, your team heads out
into the jungle, hoping to uncover the hidden
COBRA base of operations. Darkness covers the
jungle, so Low-Light, with his great night vision,
takes the point. He leads the team to a small
clearing.
As Low-Light decides which way to go,
Roadblock drifts away from the others. Soon he
returns and says, “I found something very inter-

He opens his jungle jacket and takes out a
large mango. “This will go great in a fruit

With a disgusted look Duke begins to turn

“That’s not our only trouble, chief,” Leath-

Noiselessly, the S.H.A.R.C. glides along
until you near the rig. Then Deep-Six takes the
sub down to the ocean floor. “No radar will pick
us up down here,” he chuckles. “COBRA won’t
have a clue that they have houseguests.”
You look out the window and see a long
glass hallway extending from one of the rig sup-
ports. “What do you think that is?” you ask.
Deep-Six follows your gaze. “I have no
idea,” he answers. “And we won’t find out until
we get into that rig and see what’s going on.”
With a dull thud, the S.H.A.R.C. comes to
rest against a rig support. You strap on your air
tank as Deep-Six shuts down the sub. Soon the
two of you are ready to begin your swim. You
open the hatch but quickly duck back inside.
“Eels!” you exclaim.
“I can’t believe you’re afraid of a few little
eels,” Deep-Six says, shaking his head.
“Not real eels,” you say, exasperated,
“COBRA Eels—frogmen! They’re way above
us, patrolling the surface waters.”
Deep-Six looks up and dimly sees the ex-
pert COBRA frogmen swimming lazily by. “I

As you streak over a small mountain ridge,

The field is not made for smooth landing,

The tiny boat heads toward the distant rig.
The G.I. Joe hovercraft sits in the water as the

W.H.A.L.E. with you and Recondo aboard. You |
motor toward the looming COBRA oil rig. In |
about five minutes you hear a terrible explo-
sion. Your boat lurches wildly in the waves. |
Looking behind, you see that the W.H.A.L.E.
has come under attack from COBRA Rattler |
jets. af
Recondo and you stare at the flaming hov- |
ercraft in silent horror. Finally Recondo speaks. |
“There’s nothing we can do for those guys now,” |
he says solemnly. “Let’s get to that rig before |
COBRA spots us.” |
Recondo clutches his M-16. The two of you |
continue to head toward the oil rig. The rising|
cloud of smoke from the W.H.A.L.E. has dis-|
tracted the COBRAS on the rig, giving you the |
chance to tie your small motorboat up to the|
side of the rig without being noticed.
After climbing a steel ladder up to a trap|
door on the bottom of the rig, you use your ex- |
pertise to spring the electronic lock that stands|
between you and the interior of the rig. |
“Good going,” Recondo congratulates you. |
“That’s just the first step,” you reply. “Now ||
let’s find the controls for those satellites and see:
if we can short-circuit COBRA’s plot.”

Minutes later the monorail returns you to)
the jungle compound under the volcano. Since:
most of the COBRAS are watching the movie on;
the rig, only a small group remains to guard the:
_ base.
Sneaking into the munitions room, you:
grab a submachine gun and head toward the jail|
cell where your friends are sleeping. You slide:
on your belly past two COBRA Crimson Guards |
who are intent on their card game in a small|
room off the hallway.
“Hey, Duke,” you whisper. “Wake up. We:
have to get out of here—and fast. There are:
going to be fireworks around here in less than
an hour.”
“What about D.C.?” Duke asks anxiously.
“The capital is safe. I redirected that satel-.
lite beam right back to its source—the oil rig!” _
“Good work!” chuckles Leatherneck.
Looking behind you for any sign of the:
guards, you blast the lock off the jail cell. Your:
team is about to escape when the guards, alerted!
by the sound of gunfire, come running down)
the hall. |
You swing around and spray the area with)
bullets. Before the guards can respond, you and|
the other members of the team have run down:
the opposite end of the hallway toward the ele--
vator that brought you down into the secret!
base.

As you lead the team down the side of the ©
volcano, away from the COBRA compound, |
you explain how you fooled COBRA and repro-
grammed the satellites.
Now, sitting atop a small hill, you point to
the COBRA jungle base and the distant oil rig.
“Keep your eyes open, boys.”
_ Seconds later a huge tremor of thunder
rocks the area. “Feels like a storm,” Roadblock
says.
Suddenly a bolt of lightning rips through
the sky and quickly explodes over the COBRA
bases. The energy blast is too much for the
COBRAS. A huge explosion rocks their jungle
base at the same time you see the oil rig break
apart and sink into the sea.
Back aboard the Flagg, Hawk congratulates —
you on a mission well done. With the COBRA |
plot destroyed, the world has already started re- _
programming the satellites for peaceful use. |
Heading back to your quarters, Leather-
neck says, “Hey, I wonder who won the Super
Bowl?” !
Patting him on the back, you reply, “The |
final score was G.I. Joe one, COBRA nothing!”

“You’re nuts!” shouts Roadblock.
Ue “Nuts, am I?” screams COBRA Com-
- mander, blind with rage. “You'll pay for that re-
_ mark. To show you just how nuts I am, I will
now start the procedure required to wipe out
Washington, D.C. It will take only one hour to
set the mechanisms in motion.”
“Me and my big mouth,” mutters Road-
block.
. “Away with the fools,” COBRA Com-
mander orders. “They are starting to bore me.”
Storm Shadow, who has been standing by
silently all this time, signals the Crimson Guards
to lead you away. They push you down a long
hallway and into a jail cell. Two Crimson
Guards stand in front of the cell.
. The situation seems hopeless. In one hour
_ Washington, D.C., will be in ruins. It might
_ touch off World War III if officials think it’s a
_ Russian attack. Or maybe COBRA Commander
_ will unleash his weapon around the world and
take total control!
A. This is a desperate situation that calls for

Zeecell?

se Coughing, you get a guard’s attention.
“Tell COBRA Commander that I’m a whiz with
electronics. I’d love to work with his system if
y_ he'll have me. I could be a real help to him.”
“We don’t have much choice,” you tell —
Leatherneck. “This baby is sinking fast. I’m
going to have to try to land her.”
Just as the fuel gauge hits dead empty,
your landing gear touches down on the airstrip.
“Good work,” Leatherneck congratulates you.
“Let’s get out of this contraption.”
You climb out of the cockpit and look at
the dense jungle all around you. You open your
collar and wipe your streaming brow.
“No time to break now,” Leatherneck says.
“Those COBRAS have a good idea where we
went down. I’m sure they’re already heading
this way.”

The two of you grab your weapons and

few paces ahead. Deep-Six struggles with it un-
successfully. You notice that a small electronic
a locking system is in effect.

oySix grunts as he heaves on the door.
You reach into your pocket and pull out a
gadget that looks like a small transistor radio.

electrodes out of the gadget and snap them into
place. After you turn the knob on the “radio,”
the door springs open.

What Destro says makes a lot of sense. Why ©
would COBRA Commander risk even the
slightest chance that Destro might ever black-
mail COBRA? “It would be better for COBRA to
have you out of the way after your work here is
finished,” you say to an eager Destro.
“So what will it be, my friend?” Destro asks.
“Surely your allegiance must still be with your
poor friends in the detention pen.”
Thinking it over again, you decide to trust |
Destro. “Okay Destro, you’ve got a deal,” you
say. “When do we start?”
Destro gets out of his seat and pushes a |
button under the desk. “We start right now,” he |
Says.
You jump out of your chair when the edge
of the table across from you suddenly flips up,
revealing the twin barrels of a shotgun.
Destro laughs and says, “Do you think that |
we trusted you for one moment? It was just a |
little game to draw you out of hiding. And |
here’s the best part. Since you and I are such ||
experts with sophisticated devices, I thought it'd
be fun to kill you with this antique shotgun.”
You hear the trigger hitting the firing pin.
and you have the awful feeling that this mission
will soon be blown to pieces. And so will you!

_____Leatherneck keeps Serpentor in a tight
Deadlock as you and your G.I. Joe Team move
out of the computer room. Roadblock spots a
4Crimson Guard reaching for his pistol and
_ swings his machine gun around at him.
“3 The Crimson Guard puts his gun down.
q When you're all out in the hallway, Roadblock
spots an open supply closet. “Leatherneck,” he
__ yells, “dump snake-head in here and let's go.”
‘s After Leatherneck shoves Serpentor into
the closet and locks it, you and the others get
i back into the elevator and press the up button.
. Suddenly a flood of Crimson Guards spills
out into the hall and flows toward you.
, Just in the nick of time the elevator doors
shut. You hear a bullet ricochet off the metal
_door. Once you are back on the surface, Road-
block pulls the pin on a grenade and presses the
_down button on the elevator. “That will put this
elevator permanently out of order,” he says,
tossing the grenade through the elevator doors.
: You and the others run as fast as you can
out of the shack and through the jungle. You
are knocked off your feet as the impact of the
_ exploding elevator shakes the jungle floor.
You land on the ground next to Leather-
neck. “It'll take them a while to dig their way

“Yo, Joe!” you say with a smile, glad that
your first mission was a success.

“Very funny,” you reply dryly as you steer
your Skystriker in a wide circle.
“Sir, shouldn’t we make an attempt to
touch down while the other Skystriker is still
causing a diversion at the rig?” you ask.
“Good thinking, Zapper,” says Duke. “One
jet should patrol the sky to keep an eye out for
COBRAS while the other jet swoops down onto
the landing strip. Do you want to scout or go
down?”
“Let me check with my partner,” you tell
Duke. “Well, big guy, what do you want to do?”
you ask Leatherneck.
“First of all,” he answers, “what I don’t
want to do is spend the rest of my days flying”
around up here just waiting for COBRA to dis-
cover us.”
“I feel the same way,” you reply. “So,
should we volunteer to fly over the strip again
or do we stay up here and let Duke do the dirty
work?”
“You have the controls,” Leatherneck aye |
“You make the call.”
It’s decision time, Zapper. What do you |

Now, alone in the control room, you begin»
to reprogram the satellite transmission system. |
“If my calculations are correct,” you say to your-
self, “I’ve just programmed the biggest thun-
derbolt ever seen by humankind to strike this
COBRA rig in exactly one hour.”
Punching in the last set of coordinates, you
laugh. “This should give these guys quite a
shock!”
You climb the stairs and confront Destro as
he directs the rest of the COBRAS near the
landing deck. “What’s going on?” you ask.
Pointing to a small boat approaching the
rig, Destro says, “COBRA Commander has de-
cided to join us for the evening movie.” |
“Oh, really,” you say. “What’s the movie?”
“We're showing Friday the Thirteenth,” he
says. a.

arrival of their evil leader, you decide that |
maybe this is a good time for you to make an
exit. I

way to the monorail depot and get behind the |
controls. Luckily, the throttle is unlocked. With |
a slight push, the monorail dips into the tunnel. _

Before you can recover from the shock,

COBRA Crimson Guards drop out of the trees
on top of you and your friends. All of you
struggle bravely, but the Crimson Guards have
the element of surprise on their side. Also, they
are wearing dark glasses that enable them to see
you better than you can see them in the blinding
glare of the lights.
_ The battle is over quickly. Each member of
your team is soon covered by a Crimson Guard
aiming a pistol at him. The bright lights are
dimmed and in their amber glow you immedi-
ately recognize one of COBRA’s most deadly
ents, the Ninja assassin Storm Shadow.
You squint and look at the fierce figure in
the white Ninja suit. All you can see are steely,
piercing black eyes behind his Ninja mask. They
are the eyes of a cold-blooded killer!

With the COBRA guard out of action, you |
drop out of the shaftway and head over to the
auxiliary power board. Rewiring the system.
takes all your speed, skill, and concentration. |
When you’ve completed the job, you and |
Recondo race down the hallway. Quickly you get |
off the rig and speed away in the Devilfish. |
You look at your watch. “I think you're |
going to like this, Recondo,” you say. |
“Like what?” he asks. |
“When COBRA Commander hits the:
switch, my rewiring will trigger an explosion on
the rig that will make you think of the Fourth of’
July!” |
Seconds later the rig begins to tremble.,
And then it blows—sky high. This is definitely
one mission that has been a real blast!
