THE ULTIMATE CHINA

WHOLESALE GUIDE

Skye Harris
Sis, start the business.
Hey ladies,

I know you've been swarming around my IG

account and your inbox, waiting for this
guide to be delivered to you.

Here it is.

Enjoy!

Skye Harris
Wholesale 101
It's late at night and you're surfing the web for fashion wholesalers.

You type "fashion wholesalers" into your Google search box.

And in 0.69 seconds, Google provides you with 66,400,000 results.

You begin clicking on the first few website links from your search.

And with every click you come across wholesale inventory that look like this:

Why can't I find quality wholesalers?!?!

You ask yourself.

The answer: For one, wholesalers are behind on technology. Most sell the majority of their inventory via physical
showroom and at tradeshows. The looks that didn't sell out, typically ends up on their website and on FashionGo.

Another reason being, the wholesale industry prioritizes their largest clients. If you're the size of Fashion Nova, most likely,
vendors are giving you access to their latest inventory before they're making it available to smaller brands. Which causes
the bigger brands to gobble up the hot-selling items before the smaller brands are even given an opportunity to access
them.

Average Wholesaler's Logic:

The bigger the fashion brand, the more business the fashion brand will bring me.

And the third reason you're having a hard time finding wholesale online is because it's labor intensive for the wholesaler to
upload all of their looks online. Vendors are constantly receiving new styles daily. For every new style, requires the
wholesaler to book a photographer, studio, models, makeup artist, fashion stylist, and many other services to capture their
new inventory.

That takes away from their time and bottom line.

And why pick this amount of effort into constantly holding photoshoots, when you can lay the garment down like this:

Snap a photo and send it to your clients via WhatsApp or WeChat, which is what the above vendor did for me.
With that being said, understand you must go through different channels to get the best wholesale inventory.

Majority of the time it's not living online.

It requires calling vendors.

Yes, calling vendors.

I know some of you are scared to do so. But ladies, we're business women. We have to do what's necessary to build a successful
business.

And if you're working with a China-based vendor who speaks little English, you may need to use a translator to make
that call for you (more on that later).

Working with vendors also requires you to email the vendor. And if you don't get a returned email, you continue to send
follow-up emails.

Last thing it requires, reaching out to the vendor via WhatsApp and WeChat.

Majority of vendors use the two mentioned messaging apps to communicate with their customers. US-based vendors use
WhatsApp and majority of China-based vendors use WeChat.

Speaking of China-based vendors and WeChat, I would like for you to take a moment to download the WeChat app. It will be
needed when contacting some of the listed vendors. Note: Not all China-based vendors use WeChat.

Additional Tips On Wholesale

1) Don't send messages like the one below when reaching out to vendors.

Hello,
My name is Brittney.
I'm looking to start my own boutique.
I'm so excited about becoming a girl boss!
How can I view your items?

It's exciting times when you're launching your business. I know. But this type of message immediately lets the vendor know you're
inexperienced, and most importantly, you have no customers. Remember the average vendor's logic:

The bigger the fashion brand, the more business the fashion brand will bring me.

I'm pretty sure the vendor will write Brittney off by referring her to their website so she can view products similar to:

And we all know, we're not interested in products that look like this.

So if you're like Brittney, save the excitement for family and friends.

The next tip is what you can do, which is:

Send images of the items you're looking for.

Benefits of Sending Vendors Desired Looks:

-Decreases your chances of vendors sending you product images that aren't selling well
-Let's the vendor know you have experience. Professional retail buyers know exactly what products they're looking for, price
points that need to be met, and quantity amounts needed.
-Saves you both a lot of time. Vendors are very busy people. They hate when you waste their time.

Since we've discussed wholesale and you've downloaded the WeChat app, let's check out the listed vendors.

LOW MOQ: 30 pairs (this MOQ is considered low for China)

Average Cost of Shoes: $6-9 (the cost will decrease when you buy higher volume)
You can place your brand name/logo in the shoe!
Vendor doesn't carry boots. Only women's heels & sandals sold.
Note: Please don't contact the vendor and state you're interested in their shoes. It's better if you send a picture of the
exact shoe you're looking to buy.
Vendor can also replicate shoes. Send them a photo of shoe and let them know you want to have it created.
How Does Payment Process Work: You pay 30% upfront when you place an order. When the shoes are ready for
pickup, the remaining balance is paid.

Below are some of the vendor's inventory

I decided to purchase the pink bedazzled heels on the left.

@iamskyeharris

Wholesale Price: $8.42.

I didn't negotiate with the vendor.
30 pairs of shoes costed me: $252.60

I showed the pic below to the vendor. To replicate the show, the vendor quoted me a price
of $7.86.
What cities do you travel to in China to source products?

For the creation of this book, I traveled to Guangzhou, Yiwu, and Guangdong.

TIP: If you're thinking about traveling to China to source products for your business,
know exactly where you need to travel.

I see some Instagram influencers advertising Guangzhou as the place to go to buy all
things wholesale.

That's not true.

And I admit, I was under this impression, too.

Certain Chinese cites specialize in certain products. When traveling to China, there'll be
a cluster of factories in each city with their own specialty.

Below is a list of products and the cities you should travel to for that particular product.

Please do not immediately
contact the vendors after
receiving this guide if you
don't have a detailed plan.
I know you're excited to jump in and begin the process.
However, I asked that you take a few days to digest this
information and come up with a detailed game plan
before contacting vendors via email and WeChat.

Also remember a total of 400 people received this guide. I

don't want my personal vendors to become overwhelmed
by inquires and I want you to get the proper time
discussing your business needs with each vendor.

So, only reach out to vendors when you're truly ready to

place an order.

Are you telling yourself you need a plethora of

products to launch your business?

Stop it!

You only need one to get started.

My vendor offers OEM and ODM. What does this mean?

OEM is an acronym that stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

These are companies that make products designed by another
company. Apple, for instance, designs iPods, iPhones, iPads and
many other products. Apple forwards the specs and blueprints to their
OEM, Taiwan-based Foxconn, to produce the items based on Apple
specifications. Apple thus outsources manufacturing to a third-party
(OEM). An aspiring apparel designer, for instance, can send her
sketches to an OEM and they make the products to her specifications.

ODM is an acronym that stands for Original Design Manufacturer.

These companies do the research and development (R&D), design
and manufacturing of products for other companies to sell. Let's
say, for instance, the same woman in the OEM example wants to start
her own clothing line that include skirts, shoes and blouses; but she
does not have the time or skill to design the apparel. The ODM shows
her their inventory of apparel, she choose what she likes, they put
her logo on the apparel, and it hers. Typically nothing about the ODM
products can be customized. But some will make exceptions when it
comes to large, bulk orders. Regardless, using an ODM allows you to
focus on other important aspects of your business, particularly sales
and marketing. The latter is essential when you use an ODM because
your products will likely be similar to other companies using the same
ODM.
What questions should I ask OEMs and ODMs?

1. Do you subcontract any of your work?

Smaller factories tend to do this, which may cause you problems later
down the line since your products rely on the coordination of two or
more companies.

2. What's your quality control process?

No matter how well you vet a manufacturer, all of them have a certain
percentage of defective products. Ask for statistics and processes
related to quality assurance and oversight.

3. May I speak to a past customer?

A manufacturer with nothing to hide and that is confident in the quality

of their products and service should have no problem providing you
contact information of either former or current clients (of course with
said clients' permission).

4. Can you handle dropshipping and is there a fee?

Salespeople will say anything to get your business. Ask an open-ended

question about their dropshipping process and if there are any
associated fees.

5. What are your minimum order requirements?

Suppliers have different requirements as it relates to volume and

revenue. New online retailers should understand any and all thresholds
to ensure its feasible to partner with a potential supplier.

6. What is your average processing time?

Amazon Prime and in-store same-day pickup means customers are

used to getting their items fast. Make certain your potential supplier
implements measures to avoid unnecessary delays and operational
issue that could lead to delays in shipping.
On the next two pages, I want to show you how
easy it is to have an OEM design manufactured.
Note: When I was asked for the
fabric weight, I had no clue. The
vendor used her design
background and chose the fabric
weight for me.
The sample price included DHL shipping.
The above message occurred on June 27.

Three days later my sample was completed.

Here's the sample:

Note: The first sample is typically never perfect. Once I receive the sample (it's coming this Saturday!), I will tell her what
adjustments need to made to make the garment perfect. One adjustment so far: I'm going to change the above tie-dye
print. Also, as a boutique owner, you must become very skilled at looking at a garment on a mannequin/dress form and
visualizing how the garment really looks when a model is in it. Many boutique owners don't have this skill so they tend to
make poor retail buying decisions.

Okay, so once we finalize the garment, I'm purchasing 300 pieces.

The vendor quoted me a price of $9.80 for each piece.
I negotiated the price to $9.20. (I'm certain I could've lowered the price more)
Estimated Shipping Cost: $500 via FedEx (Price will be a little lower since I have a FedEx business account)

So........

Estimated Cost For Each Piece (including shipping): $10.87

The Boutique Owner Who's Selling The Original Piece Charges $45 For The Jumpsuit
Potential Profit If I Charge $45 Per Piece: $34.13 Per Jumpsuit
Profit If I Sell All 300 Pieces At $45: $10,239

I want to set you ladies up for success, so I want to open your mind up to OEM ordering. I really believe it will increase
your chances of success.

Note: The more you work with a vendor/manufacturer, the more discounts you'll receive. This is my first time working with
this company so I didn't want to push it when it came to negotiating. Next time, I will.

I share everything with you, ladies.

Did you know? The garment manufacturing industry accounts for

47% of China's total GDP (Source: Fair Wear Foundation - 2013)
Should I produce my fashion line in the USA or China?

USA Pros and Cons

-uniqueness and positive branding for your company (“Made in the USA”). More
than 95% of US apparel and footwear was imported in 2015, according to the
American Apparel and Footwear Association, compared to 95% of US apparel
being made in the USA in the 1960s.

-much faster delivery and manufacturing times

-lower distribution costs

-lack of skilled labor in USA means higher labor costs

-poor working conditions at US garment factories. Textile workers in Los Angeles

reported rats, cockroaches, no access to clean water, poor ventilation, no safety
training, and even violence from supervisors (Source: Garment Workers Center -
2015). Americans expect that overseas, but not domestically. This could damage
your company's reputation.

-most US textile workers are immigrants, many undocumented (Source: Pew

Research Center - 2015), which could also affect your brand's reputation

China Pro and Cons

-China is a top three producer in the world of both polyester and cotton, meaning
lower production prices

-India surpassed China as the world's top cotton producer in 2019. It borders China
and is thus easier/less expensive to import cotton

-lower production and labor costs means higher profit margins

-China has production capabilities beyond that of most countries because they
have been doing it for decades. You can always scale your business with the right
Chinese manufacturer.

-tariffs and threats of war could abruptly cut off your supplier and destroy your
business

-the language barrier either adds extra costs to your business (for a translator) or
makes negotiations more difficult when doing it yourself.
Don't judge a
vendors capabilities
by their website.

Like stated before,

websites are never

Repeat After Me:

Communicating with
vendors and placing
orders require that I do the
work. I will do the work!

A lot of people don't want to do the work. They're

under the impression running a boutique is simply
selecting styles online and adding them to their
website. That's not how it works. There's many
moving parts when it comes to running a boutique.
Without doing the work, success isn't possible.
So be commited to giving it your all.
But, I know you will.
The Site I Use To Find Translators To Help Me With Communicating With Vendors

Sometimes I have trouble reaching vendors. When I do, I reach out to a guide/translator on
this site and will have them contact the vendor via phone. I typically pay the translator about
$10 to do this. Note: Some vendors speak English, so you can make the phone call
yourself.

I also use this site to book my translators for my visits to China.

Synotrip.com
SHIPPING 101

How will vendors ship products?

Some vendors will handle your shipping. Some won't. No worries, you can still purchase
from them. You will need to handle your shipping. It's simple. If you're shipping large
amounts of inventory, I suggest you hire a shipping agent. The shipping agent will handle
the entire shipping process for you. Their job is to make sure your inventory arrives to you
damage-free and in a timely manner.

If you're purchasing smaller quantities, you can hire someone from Synotrip.com to ship
your orders to you.

For the vendors who don't handle shipping, I've decided that I will have my translator pick up
my products from vendors and then have her send them to me via DHL and China Post.

Note: If you plan on traveling to China, don't forget you can check your purchased
merchandise into the airlines when you head back home.

I never thought of this option. Until one day I was at the airport and I saw lots of people
lugging their inventory into the airport using the airport lugguage carts. You may not be in
favor of this idea. However, I wanted to run it by you.

What is the cheapest way to ship from China?

It's well-known that shipping items from China can take a month (or longer) for you to
receive items if shipped via standard delivery - China Post or Hong Kong Post. This is the
cheapest method, but not necessarily the most efficient.

ePacket shipping is the next level up. The United States Postal Service entered into an
agreement with Hong Kong Post and eBay China in 2011 specifically to help e-commerce
merchants. Products up to 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms) receive tracking and delivery
confirmation service, which cuts shipping times in half versus the standard option. ePacket
shipping is relatively cheap. But the White House issued a press release in October of 2018
saying it is adopting "self-declared rates for terminal dues" on products received from
overseas. This means ePacket rates will rise by January 2020.

Does DHL offer business accounts to save money on shipping?

MyDHL is an international shipping solution for small businesses. The company has a large
team of international shipping specialists that take much of the guesswork, including taxes,
tariffs and shipping times, out of the equation so you can focus your efforts elsewhere. All
the services are online, so you can get quotes instantly and receive your products faster.

To open an account, visit MyDHL.com. Click on the "Register Now," button, select your
country, and fill out all the fields with an asterisk. DHL recommends you use your company
email address for your User ID, and that your email address be a unique address, not a
Gmail, Yahoo! or some other corporate email. You may link a current DHL account to
MyDHL or choose "No, I don't have a corporate account” to create a new account. Once you
accept the terms and conditions, an email will be sent to your inbox to confirm your account.

Once you click the confirmation link, simply log into the website with the credentials you
created and start using MyDHL.

How long does it take for a container to clear customs?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Air freight is typically the fastest, taking
1-3 business days. Ocean freight (cargo ships) takes 3-5 days. If you get unlucky and your
container is chosen for x-rays and a more extensive examination due to a high initial
inspection score, it can take upwards of two weeks. U.S. Customs also charges you the
costs of more intensive inspections if they do that.
Should I negotiate with vendors?

Negotiations are common for the Chinese in all aspects of life, whether its rent, salary, or
shopping at local stores. In fact many stores in mainland China do not have price tags on
anything. You have to ask, which typically yields a high starting price to leave room to
haggle.

Of course the first priority is breaking the language barrier. Do not expect to talk to
someone who speaks or writes perfect English. You can break the ice with a potential
supplier by sending the first email and waiting for their reply. The email should look
something like this:

Greetings,

My name is (name) and I'm the sales manager for my firm in the United States. I'm
contacting you because our company sells (product) and I see that you have experience
in manufacturing them. Could you please provide me with a quote for (number of units)
and the turnaround time for delivery? I've contacted three other potential suppliers and
am simply looking for the best combination of price and customer service. Thank you very
much.

Sincerely,

(Name)

The most important part of negotiations is to make the potential vendors aware that you
are talking to many others. Don't rush, be respectful, and be objective. Do not squeeze all
the juice out of the orange though. You always get what you pay for, and the quality of
service and products will drop if you push the supplier past their threshold.

How do I know if a supplier is a manufacturer or a
wholesaler/trading company?

Most entrepreneurs want to work with manufacturers (factories)

because they believe prices are lower. That is not always true. Further,
trading companies have better lines of communication and more
products to choose from. Smaller factories emphasize production in
their operations, while trading companies prioritize customer service.

Request a copy of the potential supplier's business license. Note it is

going to be in Mandarin, so you'll need to hire a reliable translator (use
Elance or Craigslist to find one). The "Business Scope" area is where
制造
you’ll find pertinent information. It will say "manufacture" ( ) or
"produce" (⽣产 ).

Next examine a Value Added Tax (VAT) Invoice. The Chinese

government issues drawbacks (refunds) on duties collected on certain
exports. But this perk is only available to factories. Ask the potential
supplier to issue you a "17% VAT Invoice". If the supplier refuses to
issue the invoice, they are likely a trading company. If they do issue the
invoice, simply check to see if their name is on it. If so, the company is
definitely a factory.

Note; I'm not against trading companies. Trading companies offer

smaller purchase mininums. This is incredibly beneficial to new
entrepreneurs.
Common Mistake Boutique Owners Make

Vendors aren't responsible for creating a brand image for you, you are. They're only
responsible for manufacturing the products for you. You have to create your own brand image
and bring the products to life with creative photography.

Please make sure you let vendor know what quality you want. They have a range. The
above price is for the highest quality.

Also, when buying large amount of electronics in China, you always want to inspect the
products before you submit payment.
How should I send funds to suppliers?

First, only pay suppliers with methods that are traceable - bank
transfers, PayPal, etc. Never use cashier's checks, money orders, or
wire transfers of any kind. The typical arrangement is 30% upfront for
the supplier to begin production. The balance is paid either when the
goods arrive at the port in your home country or an inspection agent
checks the merchandise prior to shipping.

Can you give me a few final words on random tricks and deception
used by manufacturers?

It's important that everything is in writing when it comes to dealing with

Chinese suppliers, particularly the final price for the products you've
ordered. Tacking on additional fees for "operational costs," "materials
costs," "taxes," etc. after you've made a deposit is simply a way for
suppliers to skim more money from you. Do not give in to any additional
demands and remind them of the contract that was agreed upon.

The best suppliers, again, will speak to you over the phone if
requested. A follow-up email summarizing any phone calls should be
sent to the supplier immediately thereafter so there is a record of
anything that was agreed upon. A returned receipt for the email
ensures its documented. The language barrier is inevitable, but you
should still be able to sense the person's intentions. If you feel
uncomfortable for whatever reason with any supplier, its best to move
on to another one.
How do I determine retail prices for my apparel?

When it comes to electronics, appliances and other big-ticket items, the

manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) is commonly used by
retailers. There is also traditional "keystone" pricing, when the
wholesale price is simply doubled. But that doesn't necessarily work in
all situation, as the type of item and the demand for said item dictates
pricing.

It's best to have a markup amount in mind that turns a consistent profit
and calculate the retail price that way. For instance:

Retail Price (R) = [(Wholesale cost)/(100 - markup percentage)*100

Thus if your signature blouse costs $6 per unit and you want to mark it
up by 40%:

R = [(6)/(100-40)]*100

R = $10

Remember your math order of operations with the PEMDAS acronym.

The same equation is used, for example, your signature necklace that
cost $12 each and you want to mark them up by 55% because they are
unique.

R = [(12)/(100-55)]*100

Using PEMDAS, calculate the parentheses first:

R = [(12)/45]*100

Then do the multiplication and division:

R = .27*100

R = $27 (rounding up)

TIP: Before purchasing, get to know what type of merchandise your target
market is interested in purchasing. This can be done by simply posting an IG
poll. From my experience, boutique owners fail to fully understand their
audience, leading to anemic sales.

Questions for You:

- Is your target audience self-conscious about their body? If so, are you
carrying merchandise to help your customer with this problem? I gained 50
pounds (yeah, I know. I'm currently working on losing it.) Recently I went
online shopping, I wanted to stumble on a boutique that caters to
complimenting certain areas of the body. I couldn't find it. Maybe you can
create it!

-Do you know what your target audience dislikes? It's just as important to
know what your audience likes AND what they dislike.

-What's the top 3 fashion trends at the moment? I ask this question a lot.
Few answer correctly. Always know the trends before purchasing
merchandise.

-How are you differentiating your business? What's makes customers buy
from you instead of Fashion Nova or Forever 21? Do you only cater to plus-
size women? Offer trendy clothing for Muslims women? Or do you specialize
in clothing for women with no hips or butt (don't laugh. I'm in that club. Like
stated before, I would love to have someone specialize in certain areas of
the body.) So what makes you different? (Note: Finding what makes you
different, may take some time. Don't be too hard on yourself if it doesn't
instantly hit you. If you're having troubling creating a differentiation, I
encourage you to cue in on what women complain about when it comes't to
fashion.

goods, toys, jewelry, crafts, pet products, apparel and much more. The combination of
low prices and wide selection make the Yiwu Wholesale Market the perfect source for
marketable products and reliable suppliers.

Note: You will need to sift through lots of vendors to find that perfect vendor for
your shop.

I highly recommend you check out the site. Remember to be
patient because the best vendors won't instantly jump out at you.
And don't be afraid to inquire about oem services. Most vendors
have factories or have connections to factories.
What is the average minimum wage in China?

China has different minimum wages depending the region and city. The good news for
Chinese residents is that said minimum wages has continually increased in most areas in
the last decade.

Shanghai has the highest minimum wage in 2019, at 2480 yuan ($360) per month. Beijing
is 2200 yuan ($319) per month, while the vast majority of smaller, rural areas have
minimum wages below 1800 yuan ($261). A livable wage in Shanghai for a single person is
much higher, however. A 480 square-foot studio in Shanghai costs about 5652 yuan ($821)
per month, with the average white-collar worker earning about 7629 yuan ($1109) per
month, according to Zhaopin Limited.

Do you remember when I posted this on Instagram? It was met
with a little controversy. "They're fake, sis" one commentor
posted, while others commented which one was their fave. To me,
the pins are just small trinkets. Nothing serious.

However, I do understand those who opposed. I decided not to

purchase them.

Friendly Reminders: Vendors will quote you prices
using yuan currency. You will need to convert the
Yuan currency to US dollars. You can do this by
typing yuan to USD currency converter into Google.

1 Yuan = .15 USD

So don't freak out when the product price seems

expensive.

Also, be mindful of the time difference when

conducting business. China is 12 hours ahead. I
recommend you correspond with vendors around
10pm est.

Last thing, I have customers from varies countries.

When placing an order with a vendor, make sure the
vendor has all the necessary paperwork to ship to
your country. This can be done by simply saying,
"Do you have the certificates to ship to (insert your
country?" When scouting vendors, I made sure
majority of vendors can ship to the US.
