word begins with a consonant or a vowel sound.

ARTICLES
a. The indefinite article “a” or “an”
The article “a” is used for:
I. Before singular count nouns to mean one. "a” or “an” is not used before a non-count noun
(uncountable noun).
Example:
• I have a marker (countable noun)
• I eat rice every day (uncountable noun)
• My father is buying a new car (countable noun)
• I have done my homework (uncountable noun)
• I like Indonesia food (uncountable noun)
II. In general statement.
Example:
• A shark is a wild animal (we do not talk about specific shark).
• A car is a motor vehicle with four wheels (we do not talk about specific car).
III. To introduce a subject which has not been mentioned before.
Example:
• She bought a new car
IV. With a complement including names of professions
Example:
• Mr. Toni is a lecturer.
• Jane is a student.
V. With certain numerical expressions
Example:
• a couple, a dozen, a hundred, a great many, a great deal, a lot of
The article “an” is used before words that begins with a vowel sound (a,i,u,e,o):
Example: an apple, an ear, an island, an orange, an elephant, an employee, an electrician, an
umbrella, an avocado, an insect.

The spelling of some words may be confusing, as the written vowel may not indicate a vowel
sound.
Example:

• a university
• a universal
• a union
but an uncle, an umbrella
• a house
• a home
• a half
• a horse
but an (h)our, an (h)onor, an (h)onest, an (h)onesty

b. the definite article “the”
The definite article “the” can be used before any noun, singular, plural, countable, or uncountable:
Example:

• The student (singular)


• The students (plural)
• The money (uncountable)
It is used:
I. When both the speaker and the listener have a specific thing or person in mind.
Example: Could you shut/close the door? (both the speaker and the listener know which door).
II. When something is common knowledge
Example: The earth is round. (we all know that the earth is round shape).
III. The second time the speaker mentions a noun.
Example: I saw a man waiting in the hall 2 hours ago.
The man looked like your uncle.
IV. With the names of musical instruments.
Example:

• He plays the guitar.


• Zika plays the violin.
V. With the superlative of adjectives.
Example: The biggest, The strongest, The most handsome, The smartest, The most arrogant.

VI. When speaking about specific noun.
Example: The sun, The moon, The Borobudur temple.
VII. With words like office, movie, and theater.
Example: The Avengers: Endgame movie, we are going to the theater, The teachers have a
meeting in the principal office.

The definite article “the” is not used:


I. Before abstract noun (words denoting concepts with no physical form) such as love, hate, hatred, anger,
wealth, health, death, beauty and etc.
II. With name of singular lakes, mountains, and islands such as lake superior, Everest, Haiti.
III. With countries with a singular name such as Spain, Japan, Canada.
IV. With the names of continents such as Europe, Asia, Africa.
V. With the names of states, towns, and streets such as Jakarta, Damai street.
VI. With names of people or magazine such as Time magazine, Daily magazine, Niko Bellick, Carl
Johnson.
VII. With names of general subjects such as Geography, History, English, Mathematics.
