TEMA: Identifying the most common car electrical problems and suggest
what you can do if you have these problems.
OBJECTIVE
Identify and Describe the most common car electrical problems and
suggest what you can do if you have these problems. Use the Simple
Present, Modals, Technical Vocabulary and Should.
WORK APPROACH
The participant, using audiovisual aids (PPT, video, etc.) will be able to
identify and describe the most common electrical problems in the car and
suggest what you can do if you present these problems, using a
vocabulary appropriate to the level of learning required in your career
( The Simple Present Tense, Modals, Technical Vocabulary, Should).

TEMA: Identifying the most common car electrical problems and suggest
what you can do if you have these problems.
If your car starts making weird noises, or if it just won’t start at all, you
might have an electrical issue. Electrical problems can be tricky to
diagnose and expensive to fix, so it’s important to know
what to look for.
Most car electrical problems are caused by
loose, corroded, or damaged wires and
terminals. But there are other possible
causes, too, such as faulty switches,
relays, or sensors. However, the most
common symptom among all is a dead battery. If your car doesn’t start,
it may be because the battery is dead and facing an electric problem.
No matter the make, class, age or working condition of the car,
electrical problems could arise. There
are a few warning signs that help figure
out what the problem is with the car.
Today's vehicles are more advanced than
ever, and the automotive technology is
continuing to evolve at a very rapid pace.
Obviously, the more modern the car, the
more complex the electrical system is
going to be. From the onboard computer
and a multitude of different sensors to
complicated wiring systems that power
various components, today's automobiles are extremely high-tech.
Most common electrical problems in the automotive
Defective spark plugs
The spark plugs ignite the mixture inside the cylinder while.
Therefore, faulty spark plugs can cause a lot of damage. In case of faulty spark plugs, you will
notice a loss of power in the car.
A faulty spark plug can cause the air-fuel mixture to ignite too soon. This
can cause what is known as “pre-
“on” or “knocks”. The pre-ignition is
uncontrolled combustion
It happens before the spark plug fires.
It can damage the engine by
causing damage to the piston and valve.
If the spark plugs are defective. Your engine will experience the following problems.
Problems with engine performance.
Pre-ignition.
Detonation.
To do?
- In these cases you will replace the defective spark plugs with new spark plugs.
Electrical Short Circuit In Car
There are several ways to detect an electrical short circuit in your car.
One of the easiest ways is to check the fuses. Detach the fuse box and inspect the fuses for signs
of damage or wear. If you find blown fuses, then you’ve likely got an electrical issue on your
hands.
Short circuits are serious electrical problems and must be fixed as soon as possible. If you ignore
the problem, you could end up with a fried engine, or worse, a fire. So don't wait, fix the short
circut today!
A short circuit happens due to a fault in wiring that shunts electricity
before it reaches its final destination. It is different from an open circuit where there is no current
flow at all. In both cases, the current doesn’t reach the intended system or component – but a
short circuit carries certain risks. If not fixed promptly and properly, it can drain the battery,
damage electronic components.
What Can You Do to Prevent a Short Circuit?
· Check your wiring for damage and make sure all connections are secure.
· Please make sure all electrical cords are in good condition and don't have any cuts or tears in
them.
· Don't overload your car's electrical system by using too many accessories at once.
· If you see sparks coming from your car, pull over and turn it off immediately
Consequences of an Electric Short Circuit in Your Car
· The battery will discharge very quickly.
· There is a high risk of fire.
· Your car may require engine replacement if immediate action is not taken.
· You could lose all power to the car.
· There is a risk of being electrocuted.
Dead car battery o discharged
Car batteries have a “useful life” of their own. They usually last between five and seven
years if all the right conditions are met. It also depends on the build quality of the car
battery.
When the car battery is discharged the vehicle engine will not start.
Causes why the car battery discharges:
• The alternator is not charging the battery
• The battery does not have good connection contact with the cables because it is sulfated
and does not charge.
• The battery is defective if it is charged and discharged quickly.
To identify these battery problems, they are not that difficult, you just need to have
experience.
To do?
You should fix the problem quickly before the battery can damage other electronic and
electrical components in the vehicle.
Blown fuses
Fuses are a necessary part of the electrical installation. They are deliberately weakened
points of the installation that burn when a short circuit or other type of overload occurs.
To do?
When any electrical device in the car does not work (lights, starter, horn, windows...) it is
likely that the fuse corresponding to that particular circuit has blown. Then you will have to
check the fuse box that all cars have, generally under the dashboard or in the engine
compartment. With the help of the vehicle's instruction manual it will be easy to identify the
fuse corresponding to the component that is failing.
To check the condition of the fuse, it will have to be removed from the fuse holder box with
tweezers or a disposable glove. And if it is observed that its central filament is melted, it
will have to be replaced with a new one by inserting one with the same characteristics into
the connection.
Tips to Avoid This Situation Altogether
We recommend doing your vehicle maintenance on time to avoid problems with the
electronic and electrical system, in addition to each maintenance being responsible for
checking all the components that may present the most failures in the vehicle.
