My School Life
Your classmate wrote an article to talk about his school life. Read the article.
Every morning on school days I wake up at 6.30. I have a quick breakfast at home and
then leave for school at 7.15. It is easy for me to catch the school bus because it stops
in front of the building where I live. The journey usually takes around half an hour,
but I never feel bored because I can chat with my friends on the bus.
When I arrive at school, I always read the notice boards at the stairs. Before our first
class, we have to go to the school hall to attend a short morning assembly. At the
assembly, the principal gives short speeches on different topics, and tells us about
special school events. To me, it is the most boring activity of the day.
After that, at 8.30, our first class begins. Each lesson lasts for 45 minutes. I have to
study nine subjects in total, including Integrated Science, English Language and
Chinese Language. I enjoy Integrated Science very much because I can do lots of
interesting experiments in the lessons.
Our school is pretty large and we have to move from classroom to classroom to attend
different lessons, so I sometimes feel exhausted after school, especially on
Wednesdays when I have a sports lesson too. The classrooms are numbered, but I can
never remember where they all are!
Of all the facilities in our school, I think the lockers are the most useful. I can put
heavy textbooks in my locker so that I do not have to carry such a heavy schoolbag
home and back to school again. The bell at the end of the school day rings at half past
three in the afternoon.
Answer the following questions based on information from the article. For questions
marked with an ‘ * ’, answer in complete sentences. (13 marks)

Nice website! The message board is a really helpful feature of the site. It will
encourage more students to visit the site and have interesting discussions.
However, I think the background of the site is quite plain. Can I suggest you use a
more colourful background?

My Favourite Subject
Two of your classmates wrote about their favourite subjects at school. Read the
passages.
Kelly
My name is Kelly. My favourite subject at school is Geography. I like it because it’s
fun. My teacher explains things very clearly, like how a typhoon begins. I become so
interested in the subject that I want to study Geography when I go to university. I also
like Integrated Science and Home Economics. The school bought new food mixers for
our cookery room a few weeks ago. Now we can prepare batter quickly, and bake
more cakes and muffins in each lesson. Also, they taste better too!

My Family (and Me)
Your new friend, Rita, has just updated her personal homepage. Read about her
family life.
Hello, my name’s Rita Lin. I’m 13 years old. I live in Sha Tin with my family. I have
a big sister. Her name is Vivien, and she’s four years older than me. We have many of
the same interests. Both of us like listening to classical music online. We also love
swimming. In fact my whole family is keen on swimming. We enjoy going to the
beach every summer.
Apart from swimming, my family likes watching television. Almost every night, we
sit on the sofa to watch TV. We try to choose interesting programmes that we all like,
and we chat a lot while we are watching them. I enjoy being with my family very
much.
I share a bedroom with Vivien. We always chat with each other so we usually have
fun sharing a room. The only time we argue is when I want to display my toy robots
on the bedroom shelves, and she wants to display her pictures of film actors and pop
singers. To stop us arguing, Mum has to bring us our favourite food - a cold ice cream
for me and chocolate for Vivien!
I am the only one in the family who likes playing chess, so I usually play it with my
friend Tommy. I met Tommy at Games Club. He’s really good at chess. I always lose.
Tommy teaches me new moves, so I can win more games in the future. He is a very
good teacher. There are lots of interesting clubs at school. I wish I had time to join
them all.
I have two cute pet hamsters. They are called Kitty and Carol. I bought them at a pet
store three months ago. At first, my parents would not let me buy them. They thought
that hamsters were dirty. But when I did well in an English test they finally agreed.
Now, even my parents like them a lot. Guess what? I think Kitty is pregnant! I’m so
excited. I’m looking forward to seeing the baby hamsters. Soon we will have a big
hamster family at home. I wonder what hamsters like to watch on TV?
