Contact and Non-contact This 3-unit course self-instructional manual is

hours will be 54 including the face to face or
virtual sessions.
Assessment Task Submission Submission of assessment tasks shall be on 3rd,
5th, 7th and 9th week of the term. The
assessment paper shall be attached with a cover
page indicating the title of the assessment task
(if the task is performance), the name of the
course coordinator, date of submission and
name of the student. The document should be
emailed to the course coordinator. It is also
expected that you already paid your tuition and
other fees before the submission of the
assessment task.

If the assessment task is done in real time


through the features in the Blackboard Learning
Management System, the schedule shall be
arranged ahead of time by the course
coordinator.

Since this course is included in the licensure


examination for teachers, you will be required to
take the Multiple-Choice Question exam inside
the University. This should be scheduled ahead
of time by your course coordinator. This is non-
negotiable for all licensure-based programs.

Turnitin Submission (if To ensure honesty and authenticity, all


necessary) assessment tasks are required to be submitted
through Turnitin with a maximum similarity index
of 30% allowed. This means that if your paper
goes beyond 30%, the students will either opt to
redo her/his paper or explain in writing
addressed to the course coordinator the reasons
for the similarity. In addition, if the paper has
reached more than 30% similarity index, the
student may be called for a disciplinary action in
accordance with the University’s OPM on
Intellectual and Academic Honesty.

Please note that academic dishonesty such as


cheating and commissioning other students or
people to complete the task for you have severe
punishments (reprimand, warning, expulsion)
Penalties for Late The score for an assessment item submitted
Assignments/Assessments after the designated time on the due date,
without an approved extension of time, will be
reduced by 5% of the possible maximum score
for that assessment item for each day or part day
that the assessment item is late.

However, if the late submission of assessment


paper has a valid reason, a letter of explanation
should be submitted and approved by the course
coordinator. If necessary, you will also be
required to present/attach evidences.

Return of Assignments/ Assessment tasks will be returned to you two (2)


Assessments weeks after the submission. This will be returned
by email or via Blackboard portal.

For group assessment tasks, the course


coordinator will require some or few of the
students for online or virtual sessions to ask
clarificatory questions to validate the originality of
the assessment task submitted and to ensure
that all the group members are involved.

Assignment Resubmission You should request in writing addressed to the
course coordinator his/her intention to resubmit
an assessment task. The resubmission is
premised on the student’s failure to comply with
the similarity index and other reasonable
grounds such as academic literacy standards or
other reasonable circumstances e.g. illness,
accidents financial constraints.

Re-marking of Assessment You should request in writing addressed to the


Papers and Appeal program coordinator your intention to appeal or
contest the score given to an assessment task.
The letter should explicitly explain the
reasons/points to contest the grade. The
program coordinator shall communicate with the
students on the approval and disapproval of the
request.

If disapproved by the course coordinator, you


can elevate your case to the program head or
the dean with the original letter of request. The
final decision will come from the dean of the
college.

Students with Special Needs Students with special needs shall communicate

that you really wanted to become a tourism enthusiast and that you
have visualized yourself as a tourism geographer.

CO Before becoming a Philippine tourism geographer, you have to
appreciate the Philippines as an archipelago, name the 17 regions
and 81 provinces in the Philippines, and appreciate the tourist
destinations in the Philippines by identifying attractions in each
province.

Let’s begin!

Big Picture

Week 4-5: Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO): At the end of the unit, you are
expected to

a. Name the 17 regions and 81 provinces in the Philippines; and


b. Appreciate the touristic value of the tourists destinations in the different
provinces and cities in the Philippines;

Big Picture in Focus: ULOa. Name the provinces and chartered


cities present in the Regions of National Capital, CALABARZON
and MIMAROPA and Bicol.

In this section, the most essential terms relevant to the study of Philippine
Tourism and to demonstrate ULOa will be operationally defined to establish a
common frame of reference as to how the texts work in your chosen field or career.
You will encounter these terms as we go through the study of Philippine Tourism.
Please refer to these definitions in case you will encounter difficulty in the in
understanding Philippine tourism concepts.

1. Access Route- means the existing roads, bridges and any infrastructure
related to transportation.
2. Administrative Region. Administrative region means segmenting the areas
geographically based on their LGU location. The President establish the
making of the Philippine regions based their economic development.
3. Culture. Culture is a set of belief passed from generation to generation such
as language, religion, food, etc.
4. Domestic Tourism. It is a form of tourism where tourist travel within the
national boundaries.

5. Interregional Tourist. Interregional type of tourist moves from one of the
regions to another.
6. Intraregional Tourist. Intraregional tourist moves from one province to
another within one specific region.
7. Local Tourist. Local type of traveler is often classified as an excursionist
because of the assumption that he or she will not need to stay beyond 24
hours in his/her province.
8. Province. Each of the Philippine regions except NCR has provinces. The
Philippines currently has 81 provinces.
9. SWOT Analysis. SWOT analysis in tourism means identifying the strength,
weakness, opportunities, and threats of the tourism destination.
10. Tourism. Tourism is an activity by a non-residents which involves the
elements of travel and stay. The intention of the activity is for leisure and not
to earn a living. Also, the tourists must stay at the destination with the
intention to go back in his place within 6 months (Cruz, 2006).

The first region to be presented in this unit is NCR. Have you been to any cities
in NCR? The National Capital Region is the seat of government and one of
three defined metropolitan areas in the Philippines.

How to get there: You can get in by air since Metro Manila is served by two airports:
the nearby Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), and the Clark International
Airport in Pampanga.

Calabarzon comprises five provinces: Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal,


and Quezon, and one highly urbanized city, Lucena.

How to get there: The cheapest way to get from Manila to CALABARZON is to train
and bus which costs ₱40 - ₱70 and takes 1h 13m.

Mimaropa. It was also formerly designated as Region IV-B until 2016. It is one of
two regions in the country having no land border with another region (the other
being Eastern Visayas).

The Bicol Region, also known simply as Bicol and historically known
as Ibalong prior to Spanish colonization, is a region of the Philippines, designated

How to get there: Before you can get to Bicol from Manila, you have to pass
through several towns in the Calabarzon region. It can take 4-6 hours just to get
away from Manila depending on the traffic. If you’re passing SLEX, it’s best to leave
Manila as early as possible (around 4 am) so you can avoid heavy traffic in areas
like Sto. Tomas in Batangas, Alaminos, San Pablo in Laguna, Candelaria and
Sariaya in Quezon.

1. Festival. A festival is a celebration or thanksgiving. In other countries they call
it gala.
2. Island. An island or isle is a piece of land surrounded by water.
3. Lighthouse. A lighthouse is a tower that sends signal to the passing ship
vessel.
4. Mountain. A mountain is a body of land that rises above the ground.
5. Museum. A museum is an institution that collects items with significance.
6. Park. A park is a place for human enjoyment. It can be natural or man--made.
7. River. A river is a flowing water. It ends to an ocean, sea, lake or
another river.
8. Wildlife Sanctuary. A wildlife sanctuary is an area where animal habitats and
their surroundings are protected from any sort of disturbance.
9. Sand Dunes. A sand dune is any accumulation of sand grains shaped into a
mound or ridge by the wind under the influence of gravity.
10. Watchtower. It is a tower used as a defense from invaders.

NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION


Name of Attraction Description
RIZAL PARK Sometimes referred to as Luneta Park,
this is a peaceful and manicured outdoor
garden located in the heart of the city.
Throughout the park. You will see statues
and monuments paying tribute to Manila's
history.

Of note is the century-old Monument of


Rizal, which houses the remains of one of
the Philippines' most celebrated heroes,
Dr. Jose Rizal.
QUIAPO CHURCH The Quiapo Church is one of the oldest
and most admired Catholic Churches in
Manila. The more formal name of the
church is the Minor Basilica of the Black
Nazarene. Depending on the time of day,
the plaza surrounding the century-old
church can be quite congested, which
makes it an interesting place to visit to
admire the devotion of the Filipino people.
INTRAMUROS You will likely pass through the
Intramuros whether you know it or not as
you explore Manila. It is the oldest section
of the city and characterized by its walled
fortress. This section of Manila was once
a walled city during Spanish Colonial
times in the 1500s to the 1800s.
MANILA OCEAN PARK The Manila Ocean Park is one of the
most unique adventures in the city and
one of the top things to do for families
visiting the city. Get interactive with
marine life with the Sharks and Rays
Encounter, Trails to Antarctica, or the fish
spa where fish clean your feet in a small
pool of water. The park easily fills several
hours depending on how many
encounters you try. In addition to the
state-of-the-art aquatic facility, you will
see exhibits of birds and other animals.
SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH AND It is a national treasure in the Philippines.
MUSEUM The Catholic Church has a unique history
that is reflected in the details of the

building. If you look closely, you will see
both Chinese and Spanish influences in
the design. The church has been rebuilt
several times after battles and natural
disasters.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE For a true exploration into the culture of
PHILIPPINES the country,it is one of the best places to
visit. The museum has four main
complexes and extensive collections and
artifacts relating to art, archaeology,
anthropology, zoology, biology, and
natural history. The museum galleries
help offer a sense of place, telling the
cultural story beyond what you will find on
your own visiting the city's many historical
attractions.
BAMBIKE ECOTOURS Manila is a pedestrian-friendly city, but if
you want to explore the culture and
history more efficiently, consider the
Bambike Ecotours. The tours provide a
unique, eco-friendly way to see urban
Manila. By taking an ecotour, you are
also supporting environmental
sustainability efforts of local businesses.
FORT SANTIAGO The site of Fort Santiago is an impressive
stop if you are visiting the city and it is
one of the most important historical sites
in Manila. The 16th-century fortress was
key in protecting the Intramuros, which is
the oldest district in Manila, known
historically as the Walled City.
DIVISORIA MARKET If you are in the mood to bargain shop,
head to the lively Divisoria Market in
Manila. It is located in the heart of
Chinatown where you will discover
overflowing vendor stalls selling
everything from fruit and spices to flip-
flops and beads.
MANILA SUPER MALL The Super Mall is easy to spot. It has a
mega globe structure on the grounds,
which makes for a great selfie spot. This
retail complex is popular with the locals,
so it can get quite crowded.

Region IV-A - Calabarzon

1. Cavite

Name of Attraction Description


AGUINALDO SHRINE Who can’t recognize the place where
Aguinaldo declared the Philippine
Independence from Spain? Aguinaldo
Shrine is located in Kawit, Cavite.

HOUSE OF GENERAL RIEGO DE The old house is made of wood with an


DIOS architecture dating back to a by gone era.
It is considered one of the country's
oldest houses in the area.

IMUS HISTORICAL MARKER Imus Historical Marker located at the


town plaza, the marker can be seen near
two vintage artillery pieces situated
across the Imus Catholic Church and
the Imus Municipal Hall. The province
also claims that is was the birthplace of
the nation, and Imus was the site of the
first successful revolution.

PEOPLE'S PARK IN THE SKY It is locacted in Tagaytay, Cavite. It has


historical significance which wa converted
into an incomplete mansion.

TAGAYTAY CITY Tagaytay is a popular holiday town south


of Manila on the Philippine island Luzon.
Known for its mild climate, it sits on a
ridge above Taal Volcano Island, an
active volcano surrounded by Taal Lake.
Overlooking the area, People’s Park in
the Sky occupies the grounds of a never-
finished presidential mansion. Picnic
Grove is a recreation area with trails and
a zip line.

2. Laguna

Name of Attraction Description


MOUNT MAKILING Mount Makiling, or Mount Maquiling, is
a dormant volcano located on the
border of Laguna province and
Batangas on the island of Luzon,
Philippines.

PAGSANJAN FALLS It is considered as one of the most


beautiful fall in the Philippines. The
three-drop waterfall is reached by a
river trip on dugout canoe, known
locally as Shooting the rapids,
originating from the municipality
of Pagsanjan.

RIZAL SHRINE The Rizal Shrine in Calamba is a


reproduction of the original two-story,
Spanish-Colonial style house in
Calamba, Laguna where José Rizal
was born.

MABITAC CHURCH/ TRAVELER ON Dedicated to St. Joseph, Baras


FOOT Church was completed in 1686. It has
an altar and lectern made of stone
which was unearthed from beneath the
church. The tiles used for the
restoration of the floor were taken from
the ruins of Intramuros.

3. Batangas

TAAL LAKE AND VOLVANO Known to be the smallest active volcano


in the world and one of Southern Luzon’s
centerpiece attractions, Taal Lake and
Volcano gives the province of Talisay a
remarkable haven for tourists both local
and foreign for its alluring and majestic
view.

APOLINARIO MABINI SHRINE Designed by National Artist Juan Nakpil,


the Mabini Shrine in Tanauan contains a
museum, library and Mabini's tomb.
Inside the museum are artifacts relating
to his life, including a painting showing
him in a hammock, being carried to
Aguinaldo's camp in Kawit, Cavite

ANILAO, BATANGAS You can experience many sports


activities in Anilao. It is perfect for
snorkeling, diving, swimming and many
more.

4. Rizal

Name of Attraction Description


HINULUGANG TAKTAK Hinulugang Taktak Protected
Landscape, also known as Hinulugan
Taktak, is a protected area located
in Rizal, Philippines. Initially assigned as
a recreation area, the waterfall area has
been designated as a national park.

HIGANTES FESTIVAL Higantes Festival, also known as the


Feast of San Clemente, is celebrated
every November 23 in the town
of Angono, Rizal.

CARABAO FESTIVAL The Carabao Festival is celebrated on


the feast day of San Isidro Labrador St.
Isidore the Worker), the farmer's patron
saint from May 15 to 16 as tribute to the
water buffalos or carabaos in the
farming town of San Isidro, Nueva Ecija,
Pulilan, Bulacan, and Angono, Rizal.
The carabao or (kalabaw) is the national
animal of the Philippines.

5. Quezon

Name of Attraction Description


LAMON BAY Lamon Bay is a large bay in the southern
part of Luzon island in the Philippines. It
is a body of water connecting the
southern part of Quezon province to
the Philippine Sea, a marginal sea of
the Pacific Ocean. It borders on the
coastal towns
of Atimonan, Gumaca, Plaridel, Lopez,
Calauag, and the islands of Alabat.

VILLA ESCUDERO Villa Escudero Plantations is 800


hectares (2,000 acres) of
working coconut plantation and hacienda
located 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south of
the city of San Pablo, Laguna Province
on the border with Quezon Province in
the Philippines.

Region IV-B- MIMAROPA

1. Occidental Mindoro
Name of Attraction Description
APO REEF NATURAL PARK Apo Reef is the largest coral atoll-like
reef in the Philippines and the second
largest contiguous coral reef in the world.
It is a sub-triangular coral atoll formation
approximately 26 kms from the north to
the south tip and 20 kms from east to
west.

CALAWAGAN MOUNTAIN RESORT The resort’s main attraction is the

Calawagan River which had won the
Cleaniest Inland body of Water for
several times.

HULAGAAN FALLS The main attraction of the island is the


Mina de Oro Beach Resort in which
boasts of a fine white-sand beach.
Fifteen minutes from the beach by boat is
a cave, the entrance to which you have
to swim through if the tide is high.

2. Oriental Mindoro

Name of Attraction Description


AGANAHAW ISLAND Anahaw Island View Resort is located
right at the outskirts of Calapan City,
Oriental Mindoro. It is situated right on
the Calapan Beach. Anahaw Island
View Resort is an ideal place for family
vacations, office outings and other
special occasions.

BALUARTE IN LUMANG BAYAN Situated in the village of Lumang Bayan,


this tower was constructed on a hill
overlooking an old harbour and the
surrounding bay. It stands as a
testimony to the constant threat of
piracy that plagued these waters well
before the colonial period.

MT. HALCON The fourth highest point in the country


rising 2,586 meters above sea level, this
mountain is a favorite among
mountaineers and other nature lovers.
Wild tamaraws still roam its forests.

PUERTO GALERA Puerto Galera is a popular destinations


among tourists. Aside from the beautiful
beaches, the town also offers a number
of tourist facilities. The waters are ideal
for scuba diving.

3. Marinduque

BATHALA CAVES These mystical caves are said to be the
repository of psychic powers emanating
from various points of the universe.

ROMBLON BAY Romblon Bay in the town of Romblon, is
an island that has fine white sand,
crushed corrals and crystal clear waters.
Romblon is known as the capital of the
province of Romblon and this is where
you can find Cobrador Island also locally
known as Nogoso.

CALAUIT ISLAND WILDLIFE This 3,700-hectare game preserve

CUYO FORT Built during the early Spanish period


to protect the Cuyunon from their
enemies, this fort is considered one of

EL NIDO El Nido is host to some of the most

1. Albay
Name of Attraction Description
HOYOP-HOYOPAN CAVE It is a natural tunnel-like structure in
Camalig. Legend says that this cave
was the primitive habitat of the natives
in the area.

MAYON VOLCANO Almost perfect volcano in the world. It


is an active stratovolcano in
the province of Albay in Bicol Region,
on the large island of Luzon in
the Philippines. A popular tourist spot, it
is renowned for its "perfect cone"
because of its symmetric conical
shape.

CAGSAWA RUINS After its construction in Cagsawa,


pirates destroyed the place. It was then
rebuilt but the eruption of Mt. Volcano
destroyed it again.

2. Camarines Norte

DAET PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL It showcases the main agriculture of the
capital. The Pinyasan or Pineapple
Festival is celebrated yearly in the town
of Daet, Camarines Norte in the Bicol
Region. The festival is celebrated from
June 15 to 24.

FEAST OF BLACK NAZARENE Held and honor the miraculous Black


Nazarene. Every year on January 9,
millions of Filipinos gather in Manila for
a procession of the Black Nazarene, or
Poong itim na Nazareno, a life-sized
statue of a suffering Jesus fallen under
the weight of the cross, along a 6.5 km
route from Rizal (Luneta) Park to the
