Jaka Tarub

Jaka Tarub was a handsome young man who lived in a small village. While he was
hunting in the forest, he came across a beautiful woman bathing in a pond. The
woman was actually an angel named Nawang Wulan, who had come down to earth
to take a bath. Jaka Tarub was immediately smitten with Nawang Wulan, and he
stole her shawl while she was bathing. When Nawang Wulan realized that her shawl
was missing, she could not return to heaven. Jaka Tarub married her and promised
that he would not ask her about her secret.

As a wife, Nawang Wulan was good at cooking and had the ability to turn a single
grain of rice into a basket of rice. Jaka Tarub never asked, but one day, while
Nawang Wulan was cooking, his curiosity led him to open the pot, and the magic
was gone. Nawang Wulan was angry, but then she discovered her shawl, which had
been hidden by Jaka Tarub, and became much angrier. She returned to heaven,
leaving Jaka Tarub and their children behind.

Moral of the story:

o Respect the natural world and the supernatural

o Curiosity can be dangerous.

Roro Jonggrang

the Pengging kingdom. One day, Prabu Boko was attacked by the powerful giant
Bandung Bondowoso and killed. Bandung Bondowoso then took Roro Jonggrang
and demanded her to marry him.

Roro Jonggrang was horrified by the thought of marrying a giant, so she devised a
plan to trick him. She told Bandung Bondowoso that she would marry him if he could
build 1000 temples in one night. Bandung Bondowoso agreed, and he began to build
the temples with the help of his magical powers.

Roro Jonggrang was worried that Bandung Bondowoso would succeed, so she
asked her maidservants to help her. The maidservants began to pound rice at
midnight, making a loud noise that sounded like the morning already came. When
Bandung Bondowoso saw that the temples were not finished and the morning
already came, he was furious. He cursed Roro Jonggrang, turning her into a statue
to complete the 1000 temples.

Moral of the story: Be clever and resourceful.

Timun Mas (Golden Cucumber)
Once upon a time, in a distant village, a widow made a desperate agreement with a
giant named Buto Ijo. The giant gave the widow a cucumber seed that could grow
into a child, but he would take her back when the child reached the age of 16. Eager
to have a child, the widow agreed and planted the seed as soon as she arrived
home. After a while, a huge golden cucumber sprouted from it, and when she cut it,
she found a beautiful baby girl inside. She named her Timun Mas, and the girl grew
up to be a sweet and lovely young lady.

As Timun Mas approached her 16th birthday, Buto Ijo came to the village to take her
back. Upon hearing of this, Timun Mas became frightened, but she was determined
to protect herself. With the help of a wise old man, Timun Mas used salt to create an
ocean, nails to form a thorny forest, and magical cucumber seeds to erect an
impenetrable wall, successfully thwarting the giant. The giant was eventually
defeated, and Timun Mas lived happily ever after with her mother.

Moral of the story: The importance of determination, resourcefulness, and bravery.

Bawang Merah Bawang Putih (Shallot and

Garlic)
Long time ago, there were two half-sisters, Bawang Merah (Shallot) and Bawang
Putih (Garlic). Bawang Merah was a lazy, greedy girl who was spoiled by her
mother, while Bawang Putih was obedient, diligent, and did all the chores without
complaint.

One day, Bawang Putih lost Bawang Merah’s scarf in the river while washing it. An
old woman found the scarf and offered to return it if Bawang Putih would cook and
clean for her. Bawang Putih agreed, and the old woman turned out to be a fairy
godmother. She gave Bawang Putih a magical pumpkin that was filled with gold and
riches.

Out of jealousy, Bawang Merah wanted the same fortune for herself. She purposely
dropped her scarf into the river, hoping to meet the old woman. When she did
encounter the old woman, she demanded a bigger reward and refused to help with
the chores. The old woman granted Bawang Merah’s request, but it turned out to be
filled with poisonous snakes instead of gold.

Moral of the story:

Prabu Baka ,and evil king .
One day, a handsome young man with super natural power named Bandung
Bondowoso defeated and killed Prabu Baka. On seeing princess Rara jonggrang’s
beauty,
Bondowoso fell in love with her and wanted to marry her.
Meanwhile, Princess Rara jonggrang felt sad due to her death father. She did not
want to marry Bandung because he had killed her father. But, she was also afraid of
Bandung. So to refuse politely, she made a condition. “I will marry you but you have
to build one thousand temples in one night as a wedding gift” requested Rara
Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso agreed with the condition. Helped by the spirit of
the demons, Bandung Bondowoso started building the temples. Approaching
midnight, the work would nearly be done. Rara Jonggrang knew and thought, “What
shall I do? Bandung Bondowoso is smarter than I thought. I would lose against
Bandung.”
Suddenly she got an idea. She woke up all the women in the palace and ordered
them to make the noisy sounds of grinding rice so that the rooster thought that it had
already been dawn. Bandung Bondowoso got frustrated because he failed
completing one, the thousandth temple.
The Princess has deceived me!” Following his anger, he cursed Roro Jonggrang,
“You have been cheated. Now, the thousandth temple is you!”
At once, the Princess turned into a statue. knowing this, Bandung Bondowoso
regretted and he went away into a farm land. From then, people called the temple,
Prambanan Temple, and the Princess statue, Rara Jonggrang statue.
‘’The moral message from the Roro Jonggrang folklore is that you should not force
your will.On the other hand, this story also teaches us a lesson that in this life we
must be ready to accept all risks due to the decisions we have made .
