Long walk to forever
The story is written by Kurt Vonnegut - American novelist and playwright. He is
known mainly for his satire and black humor, as well as science fiction. But the
story
«Long Walk to Forever» is not characteristic for him and stands out for its
romanticism and drama.
The text under analysis a lyrical narrative about relationships between people from
different social groups. The general atmosphere of the text is dramatic, because
main
characters will somehow have to sacrifice something for the sake of building their
relationships: freedom, position in society, relationships with parents. One of the
heroes agreed to a lesser sacrifice for herself, but the other disagrees with this and
tries to offer her vision.
Judging by the title we can guess that the author laid down the philosophical idea
that
the relationship of lovers is a long walk together to eternal love.
The author brings forward the problem of love and infidelity. A couple in love
begins
their journey, but parents' vision of the groom differs from reality, so they predict a
more promising future for their daughter. The girl is confused, but agrees, throwing
her hand to her failed partner, since the prospects with him seem vague and this
scares her. However their "walk" is not completed — the groom turns off the new
path of his life and returns to his beloved, risking his life at the same time to find
out
if she can go against all the difficulties and continue this long journey together.
The main characters appears before us at a turning point in their lives. They are in
love, but they are on different social levels, which prevents them from being
together.
Catherine makes a choice in favor of a simpler solution to the problem — marrying
a
promising groom. Her lover Newt knows about the decision of his beloved, but
denies it and goes awol to find out the relationship. Catherine has already come to
terms with, but Newt appears to her like a bolt from the blue, inclining her to
reconsider her decision during a walk.
Catherine was in love with Newt, but the difference in their financial positions puts
end to their possible life together as husband and wife. Heroine agrees to marriage
and abandons her love, indulging her parents' desire to provide her with a cloudless
future. But the rejected Newt isn't going to give up so easily, and under threat of a
military court, he goes AWOL to find out an honest answer — whether Catherine
will
wait for him. Newt symbolically invites her for a walk, reluctantly Catherine
agrees.
Now they have to decide for themselves whether this walk will last forever or
whether everyone will go their separate ways.
In my opinion, the text describes the futile sacrifices of a person in an attempt to
somehow correct a situation that displeases him. A person's actions are determined
by
his motivation, and if a person decides to choose another path, burning bridges
between you, you shouldn’t put yourself in danger of trying to convince him,
destroying the newly formed way of life
"Real men go camping" is a short story, the author of which I couldn’t find.
The text describes a portrait of a typical man in the past, probably this text was
created after the war or at the beginning of the 20th century, when the scouting
movement was emerging, and the theme of Indians, wild virgin forests and
survival
in them was very popular.
Based on the title we might think that text will tell us about how men test
themselves
for strength or perhaps look for any jewelry in the wild. Its also possible that the
main characters are retired officers and can take their sons to teach them survival
skills in the forest, similar to scouts.
The author puts forward the problem of fighting fears and tempering character. It is
believed that a person who has gone through many difficulties is distinguished by
his
endurance and able to overcome any obstacles, live in any limited conditions. So
our
main character decides to overcome himself and go after stronger and braver
comrades. >муррочка: Tom is the main character of the story, who is skeptical
about the popular type of
outdoor activity in his environment - camping. His relationship has roots from his
childhood: when he was little, his father took Tom camping with him, but the boy
didnt show his masculinity because he was afraid of the atmosphere of the night
forest and got lost there, and also got into a lot of trouble, for example he set fire to
the sleeve of his jacket.
Tom usually made up reasons to refuse his friends, and I think they guessed that he
was lying. However, as a last resort Tom decided to face his fear and began to pack
up for a camp. He bought a lot of seemingly unnecessary things, nevertheless in
adulthood he showed his camaraderie and not only didnt cause trouble to his
friends,
as his father did in childhood, but also immediately join their experienced team.
In my opinion, men are even more sensitive and vulnerable than women, and
failure
can unsettle them for a long time. Nevertheless, Tom has grown up and proved that
he can take responsibility for himself in difficult conditions
