Alfred Russle Wallace
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) was a British naturalist,
explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist, best known for
independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural
selection.
What were the discovery of Russel Wallace
1. Theory of Natural Selection:
● Wallace is best known for independently developing the theory of natural
selection. While Darwin had been working on the idea for years, it was Wallace’s
1858 letter outlining his own theory that spurred Darwin to publish On the Origin of
Species.
2. Biogeography and the Wallace Line :

Wallace is often considered the father of biogeography, the study of the


distribution of species across geographical areas.
His observations in the Malay Archipelago (modern-day Indonesia and
Malaysia) led to the discovery of the Wallace Line—a boundary separating
the distinct faunas of Asia and Australia.
Contributions to Zoology:

● He described thousands of species new to science during his


travels in South America and Southeast Asia, expanding
scientific knowledge of global biodiversity.
