What is Digital Printing?
Digital printing is the process of printing digital-based images
directly onto a variety of media substrates.
There is no need for a printing plate, unlike with offset printing.
Digital files such as PDFs or desktop publishing files can be sent
directly to the digital printing press to print on paper, photo
paper, canvas, fabric, synthetics, cardstock and other
substrates.
4
Applications Of Digital Printing
Digital printing can be applied on any kind of
fabrics like cotton, poly, silk etc. Home textiles - Printed 3pcs
curtains, bedding
Some examples are
given with images:
Printed Bed Sheet

Digital Printing Technologies
•Piezoelectric Ink Jet (PIJ) - uses piezoelectric actuators to
eject ink drops
•Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) - ink is squirted through nozzles at a constant
speed, drops are charged and deflected to form the image
•Drop-on-Demand Ink Jet (DOD) - drops are only ejected
when needed to form the image
•Electrophotography (EP) - uses a photoconductive drum to
attract and transfer toner to fabric
•Thermal Ink Jet (TIJ) - uses heat to vaporize ink and eject drops
6
Digital Printing Workflows
1.Pre-treatment of fabric to improve ink
adhesion and color yield
2.Printing using digital inkjet or
electrophotographic printers
3.Post-treatment like steaming, washing
and drying to fix dyes and remove excess ink
Market Size And Growth
•Digital textile printing currently has only 2% market share
compared to traditional analog processes like screen printing
•But its market penetration is growing at over
6% annually
•The global digital textile printing equipment market is
expected to reach $2.25 billion by 2028 at a CAGR of 14.9%
•The global digital textile printing ink market size
was $1.1 billion in 2019 and is projected to reach
$2.7 billion by 2027
8
Challenges and Limitations
•Lower productivity compared to traditional printing methods
•Limited color gamut and fastness properties for some
applications
•Requires expertise in color management, workflow, and fabric
pre-treatment
•Higher costs for short runs, but can be cost-effective for
customization
9
Future Trends
•Continued growth in digital textile printing adoption, especially for
fashion, home textiles and soft signage
•Advancements in inkjet technology to improve speed,
quality and cost-effectiveness
•Development of new inks and fabric pre-treatments to expand
applications
•Increasing use of digital printing for mass customization
and integrated production systems
10
Advantages of Digital Printing
•Design flexibility and ability to quickly change designs
•Short runs and mass customization capabilities
•Environmentally friendly with less water, energy and chemical usage
compared to traditional printing
•Ability to print photographic quality images and detailed designs
11
Disadvantages of Digital Printing
• Digital printing often costs more per copy than analog printing for
longer print runs
• It frequently requires specially prepared and coated
substrates
• Most digital printing technologies deposit very thin layers of ink or toner,
necessitating layering for applications requiring thicker deposits, which
results in slower operation.
• Digital inks and toners are limited in variety and tend
to be expensive.
