CHAPTER 10

1. Ricardo offer to give Lufuno’s parents a lift to work to ensure that


they arrive at work safely. Anthony on the other hand does not agree with
Ricardo. Anthony also works at the factory but he is on strike. Anthony
calls Ricardo a traitor because he wants to help the Mukwevho family.
2. She wants to ensure that Lufuno uses correct spelling and grammar,
but to no avail because Lufuno replies with abbreviated SMS
language.
3. Noki laughs at Sim because he can’t be part of the WE if he doesn’t
even work. The only we there is, is their father.
Sim uses typical language for strikes. They bombard and provoke
each other into believing that if THEY stand together they can make
anything happen. He trying to make Lufuno understand that because
her parents are not part of the WE that stands together, they must be
on the look-out.
4. The factory has arranged special taxi-transport with a police escort
for the workers who have decided to continue working during the
strike.
5. Tshilidzi is an extrovert not afraid to show her feelings to all and
sundry. Lufuno is more introverted and sensitive and internalises her
worries and fears. Tshilidzi gives vent to her feelings by crying and
laughing loudly whenever, wherever she is inclined to do so.
6. Mrs Jantjies had sold Chantelle’s mother plants without any roots
once and since the she considers her to be a thief.
7. She wants to be alone with her friends for a while and is willing to
take the risk of sending her sister out into the dangerous township
under these hazardous circumstances.
CHAPTER 11
1. The party at Zake’s Tavern on Saturday.
Sneaking out and going to the party.
The clothing they will wear to the party.
Music, wish lists of songs.
The boys that will be at the party.
Mandla.
2. No, Lufuno has had a very sheltered upbringing and she is reticent
by nature. This loud tavern filled with drunk people will be offensive to
her. The learners description of a similar location will provide the third
mark.
3. Dudu and Lufuno went to a party without consent and were caught
by the pastor’s wife. They were punished by their parents.
4. He is interested in her.
He makes her laugh a lot.
He has a sense of humour.
He makes Lufuno feel safe.
5. Lufuno blurted out, “So, why did he walk me home and…” and her
face must have given her away.
6. Tshilidzi isn’t at the spaza.
She bought sweets and a one litre.
No one has seen Tshilidzi.
Thoughts of kidnapping and rape race through Lufuno’s mind.
When Lufono gets home she find Tshilidzi there with her mother.
Her mother scolds her for leaving her sister alone in the
house.
7. Mandla has given her special attention and had been really
interested in her as a person. She loves his sense of humour and the way
he makes her laugh.
8. She wants it to be fairy tales. In those days there weren’t any
modern things like phones and a named soccer team. She wants to live
in the fantasy and now Lufuno is making it a reality.
9. Lufuno feels insecure about Mandla’s feelings for her because of the
fact that he has another girl’s image as his screensaver. And on the
other hand he kisses her and sends her messages stating he misses
her. The best way to solve this uncertainty is to openly confront Mandla
with this fact and find out exactly what is going on and how he feels
about her. Anything similar can be accepted.
CHAPTER 12
1. He has told her that he missed her and she failed to respond
because she is feeling insecure. He wrote down his emotions and she
ignored him, making him feel vulnerable.
2. He is surprised by this new feeling he has, he has never looked
forward to school before. Lufuno’s face fills his mind.
3. She has a picture of a donkey with the caption the Mukwevho’s new
car and a pile of stones with the caption the Mukwevho’s new calculator.
4. A woman scorned by a man is usually extremely hateful as a
measure of revenge. Sindi had set her sights on Mandla and he has made
it obvious that he prefers Lufuno over Sindi. She feels hurt and tries to
get to Lufuno to get back at Mandla.
5. She clicks her tongue.
Wonders why Sindi hates her so.
Tears come into her eyes.
She cannot believe it, when Mandla says that Sindi is jealous of her.
6. He demands to know who wrote the term “kwere-kwere” on the
board after he has rubbed it off the board and threw the board cleaner
onto the floor.
7. That the girl in the picture is his sister, and not his girlfriend from
the Eastern Cape.
8. She was jealous and when her face turned happy and relaxed
Mandla felt relieved.
9. Dumi got fired by Mandla’s Aunt and father and therefor he is bitter
towards Mandla. He is bitter because Lufuno shows no interest in him
and rather stands up for herself, showing him she is not scared of him.
He also dislikes her because her parents refuse to strike.
10. He is teasing and provoking Mandla into a fight. He acts as if he is
just starting with Mandla and that there are more to come after the soft
punch.
11. No, Mandla is ready to fight the whole gang to protect Lufuno. He is
honourable and strong-willed and courageous.
12. Nandi, Lufuno’s sister. She directly confronts Mandla to tell her why
he is interested in her when he has a girlfriend. She saw her on his
phone. He explains to her why his sister is on his phone.
