GUIDE QUESTIONS / PROBLEM SET 5

BES-025 Statics of Rigid Bodies

Name:

Family Name Given Name Middle Name

Instructions:
1. Write your answers on the clean folio paper for each number. Your answers/solutions
are PERSONAL. Do not copy nor share them to your classmates, to avoid significant
deductions.
Save your personal file in PDF format, as follows:
< Family Name, Given Name >_<PS5>
example: Godoy, Billy Joe G._PS 5
2. Save in only one (1) file name, regardless of the number of pages. Do not assign 1
file name each for every page. If this happens, only the first page will be
considered.
3. Send your electronic file to our google classroom on or before the set deadline. I am
very particular with deadlines. In every course requirement, deadlines will be set.
Noncompliance/adherence to the set deadlines mean corresponding (and very
significant) deductions in scores. Generally, 20-point deductions per day of delay shall
be imposed. Submissions done more than two (2) days after the deadline shall NO
LONGER BE CONSIDERED. In this case, a score of zero (0) for this particular requirement
will be given. Be punctual in your submission of course requirements in order to avoid a
“buildup” of un-accomplished assignments, because this will cause you unnecessary
stress and pressure in catching up with succeeding module requirements, not
mentioning the score deductions given for late submissions. I am aware that we are all
busy with our professional, academic, family and personal endeavors. But I am sure
that we can manage our time very well.
4. Please do not be limited by the given reference materials in your module. Feel free and
be creative to utilize other related and relevant print and non-print reference materials
that could enhance your learning in the given topic, from the University Library, and/or
the internet.
1. A water supply pipeline crossing a wide river is to be supported by a flexible wire cable
with an allowable tensile load of 20000 kg. The pipe weighs 60 kg per meter and has a
total length of 60m. (30 points)
a. Determine the minimum sag of the cable
b. Determine the tension the Lowest point of the cable
c. If the sag is to be 3m, what is the tension at the support?

2. Determine the resultant of the system of concurrent forces having the following
magnitudes and passing through the origin and the indicated points: (20 points)
P=280 lb (+10,+6,-4)
T=520 lb (-3,-4, +10)
F=270 lb (+5,-3,-6).

3. A cable is suspended between two supports at the same elevation 250m high and
500 m apart. The load is 500 kg per horizontal meter including the weight of the
cable. The sag of the cable is 50 m. calculate the total length of the cable and the
maximum Tension in the support. (20 points)

4. Determine the resultant and direction cosine of the system of concurrent forces having
the following magnitudes and passing through the origin and the indicated points: (40
points)
P=280 lb (+12,+6,-4)
T=520 lb (-3,-4, +12)
F=270 lb (+6,-3,-6).

5. Determine the angles β1,β2, β3 &β4, forces in each segment and the total length of
the cable. If y=30m (90 points)
