The syllabus of M.A. (Political Science) programme has been designed in such a way as to
enhance the literary, analytical, theoretical and research specific pedagogical skills among the students
opting to pursue their career in the subject. The Core as well as Elective courses offered have been
structured keeping in mind the coveted goal of encouraging the students to comprehend, dig deep into,
appreciate and reflect on the various sub fields of the subject. Political Science is a subject that is
Popularly chosen by candidates appearing for the UPSC examinations and this syllabus has been
designed with the requirement of various competitive examinations as well. To enable the students to
meet the requirements of the integrative system of the New Education Policy, a research element has

Course Rationale:
This paper deals with the Second World War and major events of the Cold War and their impact
on world politics so students could see and understand present world politics in proper
perspective. These Cold War events will help understand Arms race too. It critically analyses
the factors leading to the end of the Cold War and its impact on the world politics. Social,
economic, and environmental concerns have also found advocates in the relatively
underdeveloped countries of the third world. The objective of this paper is to analyse these
concems being faced prominently by developing countries and its impact on the course of
world politics and policy making initiatives both globally and within individual countries.

India’s foreign policy reflects the philosophy of India as soveréign democratic nation and
the self-image and role she conceives for herself in the global policies in Cold War as well as.

International Organization
Course Rationale:
This paper studies the evolution and the development of international organizations from its
inception till Present Times. It focuses on the problems that confront international organizations
and constraints within which they function. An in-depth study of the structure and functioning of
the United Nations needs to be undertaken and analyzed ftom perspective of weather it has lived
upto the expectations, hope and aspirations of its architects. It attempts to study WTO's effort to
ensure equity and rule based free trade in the world taking into account the need of both
developed and developing world. In addition, it tries to understand UN's role in Post-Cold War
era which has shifted more from political and security considerations to social, economic,
humanitarian and environmental concems. It focuses on UN’s post Cold War challenges demand
of its democratization.
Course Content:
Unit 1: The nature and Evolution of International Organization; International Organization
Unit 2: The League of Nations: structure, working and failure.
Unit 3: The United Nations: Structure; functions with focus on Pacific Settlement of disputes
and Enforcement Action, Economic and social development; Human Rights:
Codification and Guarantees.
Unit 4:The UN's Post Cold War Challenges, Demand of UN Democratization.
Unit 5: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World
‘Trade Organization (WTO): Structure and Functioning.
