Anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body. Anatomy is closely related
to physiology, the study of body function.

Branches of Anatomy
Anatomy is a broad field of science consisting of several branches. The main branches
are :
1- Gross anatomy :(gross =large) is the study of body structures that can be examined
by the naked eye such as the bones, lungs, and muscles….etc.
2- Microscopic anatomy: is the study of structures that are so small they can be seen
only with a microscope. These structures include cells and cell
parts; groups of cells, called tissues.

Anatomical position
In the anatomical position the person stands erectly with the feet flat on the
floor and should be parallel , the arms are at the sides and rise slightly, and the
palms , face and eyes facing forward.

Anatomical Planes
Many views of the body are based on imaginary “slices” called sections or
planes.
There are three main plans are :

1- Sagittal plane a vertical plane that runs through your body from front to back or
back to front. Extends vertically and divides the body or an organ into right and left
portions.
- The median (midsagittal) plane passes through the body and divides it into
equal right and left halves.
- parasagittal planes, divide the body into unequal right and left portions.

2- Coronal plane a vertical plane that runs through the center of your body from side
to side. This plane divides the body into front (anterior) and back
(posterior) portions.
3- Transverse plane passes across the body horizontally; it divides the body into
upper (superior) and lower (inferior) portions.
