ICT IN EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
In ancient time, the Guru used to teach the students in Ashrams.
The teaching learning process changed with the change of
society. Students started studying in the classroom instead of the
Ashrams. Textbooks, notebooks, chalk, blackboard and teaching
aids were introduced in the schools globally. Attractive and big
buildings for educational institutions have been built. School
administration system has been divided between government
and the private agencies. Private organizations started
competing in using ultra-modern techniques in teaching
learning process. Educationists have understood and started
making others understand the importance of educational
technology. At present, many researches are being conducted on
educational technology. Results of the most of the researches
favour the use of educational technology in education. On the
other side, many administrative activities are also carried out
with the help of educational technology. At present computer
and information technology is used to carry out various activities
in the school. But, in this chapter we will discuss about the use of
educational technology in teaching learning process.
APPLICATION OF ICT IN EDUCATION
ICT is used in education to accomplish various tasks related to
Teaching- learning process, administrative work and library. The
main area of application of ICT in education are as follows:

 It is being used at a large scale in distance and blended

learning systems.
 It is used in cooperative learning to make the students learn
on their own by using the means of ICT.

Page 1
 It is used in the evaluation of the students in order to make
the evaluation system more effective and unbiased.
 It is used in school administration and school library.
 ICT is used for developing computerised self-learning
material.
 ICT is used to carry teaching learning process through WBI,
CAI and CMI approach.
 It is used to develop multimedia teaching learning material.
 Various educational websites are developed through ICT.
 It helps in developing educational software.
 It helps in developing the system in which the students will
play games and learn.
 It is helpful in establishing virtual classroom.
 Concept of smart class in based on ICT only.
 It helps in using Edu Sat like satellites effectively in
teaching learning process and in education.
 It is used in providing online education.
 It is used in developing online educational resources like
NROER.
 ICT is used in developing in MOOC system of cooperative
learning.
 It is used in distance learning system at a large scale.
 It is used in conducting online examinations.
 It is used in developing E-learning system.
 ICT is used to develop learning objects, which are used in
E-learning system.

 ICT makes the E-library useful and wide spread.
 ICT helps in organising educational tele-conferencing.
 ICT can be used to create a game based learning
environment.
The above mentioned are some areas of education system, in
which ICT can be applied. But seeing the process of advancement
of ICT, we can say that in future ICT will cover more areas of
education field. Now, we will discuss about the possibilities of
ICT in education in the context of teaching-learning.
OBJECTIVES/ADVANTAGES OF ICT IN TEACHING
LEARNING PROCESS
ICT can be used to perform various activities related to teaching
learning process. Teaching learning process involves the teacher
and the students to work for realizing the instructional
objectives. ICT can be helpful to the teachers in various activities
related to his profession. Some of such activities are as follows:
1. Teacher can prepare question bank on computer.
2. He can exchange the thoughts through the means of ICT
with the teachers of other schools to enrich the question
bank.
3. He can develop educational software bank.
4. ICT will be helpful to him in preparing question paper on
computer.
5. ICT will be helpful to him in preparing result sheet/ mark
sheet on computer.
6. The teacher can analyse the result of the students with the
help of computer, in order to plan further teaching
strategy according to the analysis of the result.

7. He can prepare progress reports of the students on
computer.
8. ICT enables him to visit educational web site through
Internet.
9. Teacher can prepare educational software or the
educational presentation programme.
10. He can use educational software or presentation
programme in classroom teaching.
11. He can make the students do project work on computer.
12. He can provide on-line education to the students.
12. He can solve the problems of the students through
chatting or e-mail.
13. ICT may be helpful to the teachers in preparing computer
based self-study material.

through social networking system in order to solve their
educational problems at a time.
17. Assignment work can be given to the students through
social networking system.
18. He can give hints to the students to solve their
educational problems through social networking system.
19. Teacher can provide important notes and information to
all the students through social networking system.
20. Students also can submit their assignment through
E-mail and other social networking systems.
21. ICT makes the smart class interactive and make the
teaching effective.

22. Virtual classroom can be used to interact with the
students.
The advantages and utility of the ICT in teaching learning
process may be more than that is mentioned above, as far as
teacher's activities are concerned.
ICT may be advantageous to the students in terms of learning
process in following activities:
1. In learning through computer based self-study material,
2. To find out latest and/or detailed reference material
through Internet,
3. In preparing projects related to different subjects on
computer,
4. To participate in computer based competition,
5. To use Internet to be in constant touch with their teachers,
6. To do on-line study,
7. To study their own subjects using various educational
software,
8. To use educational video CD,
9. To participate in educational video or audio conferencing,
10. To take part in virtual class room with a view to enhancing
learning,
11. By forming the groups on social networking websites the
students can interact with one another in order to enhance
their understanding in their subjects, and
12. Students can share their ideas, notes and information
