Though this weeks travel advisory on the Coquihalla was lifted by last evening, Environment Canadas weather forecast for high winds & blowing snow is on through Thursday. While road conditions are listed as normal compact snow with slippery sections officials are asking drivers not to set out unless absolutely necessary. And commercial drivers bound for the Coquihalla must chain up. VSA is advising motorists not to expect the weather to settle down until April, and to remain vigilant at all times. Driving at 110 km/hr is unacceptable given the snow and ice, but its up to individual drivers to decide what speed is comfortable for them. The next couple of days, the forecast is for blowing snow, winds northeast 50 -70 km/hr, some flurries, and temps -14 to -17, with the wind chill putting it down to -30 & -31. By Friday temps will be on the rise, going from -15 to +3, with snow or rain. Then Saturday will see rain, with temps well above 0: low 6, high 7. And that transition time is as dangerous on the Coquihalla as any winter weather!

The Merritt Rocky Mountain Army Cadets Corps has celebrated its 90th year as a non-profit youth organization. Brian Hawkins, a big supporter of the corps, wanted to do something to help the group celebrate, and came up with a crest that could be displayed in the hall. But Brian doubted his stick men style art would do justice to the crest, and asked Susan Thompson, an artist friend, to help on this project. Merritt Army Cadets is free to join for boys & girls between the ages of 12 & 18. During the annual Chilli Sunday event, Jan. 29, 11am-2pm, NNSC members will dedicate the main shelter to the founding members at 12noon.
