MINIMALISM

June 10 2013
This post could be very long and drawn-out, but that would be ironic. Instead, I’ll
keep it simple.

Minimalism is a philosophy that I apply to every aspect of my life. For me,

minimalism means getting rid of distractions so that you can focus on what you
love. Simple, right? It takes a lot of practice.

Minimalism means owning only the things that you need.

Being friends with only the people you are willing to make time for.
Saying “no” to consumerism.
Saying “yes” to contributing to people’s lives in a meaningful way.
Rising above your distractions and making a concerted effort to better yourself
in every way possible.

It’s an ambitious philosophy, and it requires you to change in ways that seem
very uncomfortable at first. But coming from someone who has endured that
pain of change, I can say that it’s worth it.

Minimalism gives what few things you own new meaning.

Your relationships with people are stronger.
You aren’t sucked into the endless vacuum of consumerism.
You make an impact on people’s lives for the better.
You enjoy the obvious benefits of becoming a better person.

Yes, the picture above is a radical example of minimalism (on the material level),
but it is the result of years of practice. Minimalism seems less radical once you
start practicing it. It’s a constant pursuit, a desire for simplicity that brings a lot
of peace. Why don’t you give it a try? Start out simple. Start by seeing how
many pencils you really need in your pencil holder. Try to make more time for
those people in your life whom you love. Say no to the extra large popcorn at
the movie theater. Make an effort to become a better person. It’s worth it. I
promise.
