Old Clothes?
By Amy Chan

Do you just put your old clothes in the rubbish bin when you
5 don’t wear them anymore? Hong Kong people throw away 110,000
tonnes of clothes every year. It means 1,400 T-shirts going to
landfills every minute!

You can put your old clothes in

charity clothing bins. Charities donate
10 these clothes to other countries.

Another way to recycle is to

share them with other people. There
are some online platforms where
you can give away your old clothes to other people.

15    From now on, think carefully before you put your old clothes in
the rubbish bin!

And I’m playing with my white sock.
I’m waiting for recess.
Recess starts at half past ten.
5 When does the bell ring, when, oh, when?
I’m waiting for recess.
Hooray! The bell is ringing.
I feel so much like singing.
Because now it’s recess!
10 What should I do in recess today?
Go to the playground to run and play?
Now it’s time for recess.
Or go to the library for a look?
Maybe sit down and read a book?

14 Running for charity

Letter

James went on a charity run in Tai Po last Sunday. He wrote

a letter to his friend about it. Read the letter and answer the
questions on the next page.

1 2nd May 20XX

Dear Carmen,
Do you remember the charity run I told you about before?
I went on the run last Sunday. There were about 100 runners.
5 We ran three kilometres in Tai Po. The weather was hot and
humid. I felt so tired at the end of the run!
It was great to do the run and raise money to help children
in different countries. Many children are poor and cannot go
to school. Some of them even lose their homes. We can raise
10 money to help them and their families build new homes.
Thanks so much for giving $100
for this charity run, Carmen. Do you
want to run with me next time? It will
be fun if we do it together!

Subject : Shark fin soup

5 Hi Ada!

My cousin, Jack, got married yesterday. They had shark fin soup at
the restaurant. I dislike it and I was very upset. Therefore, I didn’t
eat any. That’s a big problem!

I think shark fin soup is bad because fishermen cut off the sharks’
10 fins and leave the sharks in the sea. The sharks cannot swim and
they die. That’s a big problem!

Now China’s airlines do not transport shark fins. Also, the Chinese
government does not have shark fin soup at their big dinners.

Hong Kong doesn’t stop people from eating shark fins. I think Hong
15 Kong restaurants should stop selling shark fin soup.

What do you think about shark fin soup?
