Committee for Standards, from
from 01.07.81

This Standard applies to electric circuit diagrams, and also to design

documentation that contain information on elements, devices and functional groups
of electric circuit diagrams to be performed by hand or in automated way in all
branches of industry, and establishes types of conventional alphanumerical
designations of elements, devices and functional groups, and also the rules for their
construction.
This Standard does not apply to diagrams of railway alarm signalling,
centralization and block system.
This Standard fully complies with CMEA Standard 2182–80.

1. GENERAL PROVISIONS

1.1. Conventional alphanumerical designations (hereinafter referred to as

designations) are intended:
for unequivocal abbreviated recording of information about elements, devices
or functional groups (hereinafter referred to as parts of object) in the documentation
for the object;
for references to corresponding parts of object in text documents;
for mark them immediately on an object, if it stipulated in its design.
1.2. Depending on function and character of the transmitted information, there
are the following types of designations established:
of the top level—devices (additional designation);
of the top level—functional group (additional designation);

of design arrangement—design designation (additional designation);

of element—positional designation (mandatory designation);
of electrical contact (additional designation);
of part of an object, with which the given part of object mates, or places of
location of picture or information about the given part of object (address designation)
in the document.
Depending on completeness of the transmitted information, the conventional
alphanumerical designation may have simple or complex structure, that is, a structure
in the form of designations of separate types or in the form of compound designation.
When necessary, it is allowed to use designations and their qualifying
characters, whose types are not established by this Standard. The content and way of
record for such designations shall be explained in the documentation for object (for
example, in the diagram).
The terms used in this Standard are defined in reference Appendix 2.
1.3. Use of conventional alphanumerical designations in documents is
established in rules for preparing the corresponding documents (diagrams, drawings,
text documents, etc.).

2. RULES OF DESIGNATION CONSTRUCTION

2.1. The capitals of Latin alphabet, Arabic numerals, and also symbols given in
table 1 (qualifying characters) shall be used to develop designations.

2.2. S t r u c t u r e o f d e s i g n a t i o n s
2.2.1. The conventional alphanumerical designation shall be a sequence of
characters, digits and symbols in one line with no gaps, while their quantity in the
designation is not established.
2.2.2. The adjacent groups of symbols in separate designations, which have
their own sense, shall be separated by:
alternation of characters and digits (for example, KC25, K2, 25KC, 2K);
dot, if the groups consist only of characters or only of digits (for example,
K.C.A, 2.25).
In designation, it is allowed to separate the independent semantic groups
consisting of characters and digits (for example, 01.A1.1312; 01.A.113.12) by dots.
2.2.3. It is allowed to record the digital part, which has the sense of ordinal
number, with the same amount of digits, where empty higher digits are filled with
zeroes, for example, A01, A02, ..., A25, ..., A99.
2.2.4. The compound designation shall be formed by sequential record of
designations of different types. A designation, which is a part of compound
designation, shall be recorded using the qualifying characters in accordance with
table 1.
The structure of compound conventional alphanumerical designation in
generalized form is given in figure 1.

A is the designation, which consists of one or several characters;

N is the designation, which consists of one or several digits;
NANA is any combination of digits and/or characters;
|NANA| is the additional part, which define the function more exactly.
For example, =A12≠T8 + 204–K4H : 12 (3.16 + 15 : 2).
Contact 12 of signal relay K4, which is located at position 204 in functional
group T8, which is part of device A12, is connected with contact 2, which is located
at position 15 and shown on the sixth sheet of diagram (3).

2.2.5. The compound designation shall give integrated information about the
part of object, whose designation is the last. Quantity of designations, which form the
compound designation, is not established.
--`,`,,,,,,,``,,,`,``,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

2.2.6. The designations of higher level (device or functional group) and design
designation indicate the functional or design inclusion of the given part of object in
the object parts of corresponding types. The designations of these types shall be
recorded in the order of inclusion, for example, ≠T1=A2–R5 means that resistor R5
is included in the structure of device A2, which is included in functional group T1.
The design arrangement of each functional part can be indicated by subsequent use of
design designation, for example, +5.24=A2+B4–R5 means that resistor R5 is located
in cell B4 and is included in device A2, which is located on frame 24 in rack 5.
2.2.7. Before designation of device, functional group or element, which stands
in the beginning of compound designation, it is allowed to not indicate the
corresponding qualifying character, if this will not result in misunderstanding of
designations. For example, K1:2 is the second contact of relay K1.
It is also allowed to not indicate the qualifying character in the record of
designations of simple structure, if the type of designation is unambiguously
established in the documentation. For example, in the table of connections, which
replaces the connection diagram (diagram 301), in column «Design designation», the
designations may be shown without sign «+».
2.2.8. The top level designation.
Designations of devices or functional groups shall be constructed from a
combination of letters and/or numerals.
To designate devices, the following shall be used:
designation of the device type assigned to it in the documentation, based on
which it is applied;
alphanumerical designation, which begins with character “A” assigned to the
device on the diagram of the object.
For example, =A23, =AC16.
The digital designation of functional groups is allowed; in this case, a
designation shall be recorded with qualifying character, for example, ≠27.
2.2.9. The designation of design arrangement (design designation).
This designation is intended to put diagrams or other documents in
correspondence with design of object. The designation shall be constructed so that
location of any part of object in the design can be indicated unambiguously. The
designations shall be constructed from a combination of characters and digits.

GOST 2.710–81 p. 5

2.2.10. The coordinate, positional (sequential) or coordinate–positional

(coordinate–sequential) methods shall be used to compose design designation.
With the coordinate method, the design designation shall be constructed from
several parts, where each part specifies one coordinate of part of object in the
conventional coordinate system adopted for the given design. In this case, the
designations of coordinates shall be separated in accordance with clause 2.2.2.
For example, +C24 is the location of object in the design with coordinates: row
C, column 24;
+5.24 is the location of object in the design with coordinates: row 5, column
24.
With the positional (sequential) method, the design designation is a digital or
alphabetic designation assigned to the given location (position) in the design. For
example, +204 is place No. 204.
The content and way of recording of design designations for specific objects
(the adopted system of coordinates and their designations, the sequence of inclusion
levels, etc.) shall be determined by features of specific design and shall be explained
in the documentation for the object (for example, in the assembly drawing). An
example of constructed design designation is given in figure 2 of reference Appendix
2.
2.2.11. The designation of element (positional designation).
Generalized designation of an element consists of three parts, which specify
the type of element, its number and function.
The type and number are the mandatory parts of conventional alphanumerical
designation and shall be assigned to every element or device of the object. The
function designation of element is not for identification of the element and is not
mandatory.
In the first part, one or several characters (the letter code) shall be recorded to
indicate the type of element. In the second part, one or several digits shall be
recorded to indicate the number of element of the this type. In the third, one or
several characters (the letter code) of element function shall be recorded. For
example, C41is capacitor C4 used for integration. It is allowed to supplement the
letter code of function with digits. In case of separated method of representation, it is
allowed to add the conventional number of picture of device part or element, which is
separated by dot. For example, A41.
It is allowed to specify only the first and second parts of designation (the
mandatory part) in the lists of elements in the object.

2.2.12. The letter codes of element types are given in table 1 of mandatory
Appendix 1. The parts of object (elements) are divided by types into groups, which
are designated by one character. To refine the element type, it is allowed to use two–
letter and multi–letter codes. An element of the given type may be designated with
one letter (the general code of element type) or two letters (the code of the given
element). When two–letter or multi–letter codes are used, the first letter shall
correspond to the group of types, to which the element belongs. Examples of two–
--`,`,,,,,,,``,,,`,``,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

letter codes are given in table 2 of mandatory Appendix 1.

The additional designations shall be explained in the documentation for object
(for example, in the diagram).
2.2.13. The letter codes of element functions are given in table 1 of reference
Appendix 2. These codes shall be used only for general characteristic of element
functionality, for example, the «main», the «metering», etc. To refine the
functionality, it is allowed to supplement the single letter codes specified in table 4
with subsequent characters and/or digits. In this case, appropriate explanations shall
be given in the documentation for object (for example, in the diagram).
2.2.14. The designation of electrical contact.
An electrical contact shall be generally designated by a combination of
characters and digits.
The designation of contact shall replicate the marking of contact marked on the
object or specified in the documentation for this object.
If designations are assigned to contacts when developing the object, then they
shall be designated by numbers. If contacts are structurally banked in some groups, it
is allowed to designate them by groups.
2.2.15. The address designation
The address designation generally consists of three parts:
the designation of document, with which the given document mates;
the number of sheet in the document, with which the given document sheet
mates;

GOST 2.710–81 p.7

the address of the other part of object (or its picture), with which this part of
object (or its picture) mates.
All parts of this address designation shall be recorded in the specified order
and separated from each other by dot. Character L shall be put before the sheet
number. When it is necessary to specify mating with several sheets of document,
--`,`,,,,,,,``,,,`,``,,,,,``-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

their numbers shall be separated by commas or (in case of several leafs running) dots.
For example, (3.L01,03) is diagram 3, the first and third leafs ;
(3.L01... 06) is diagram 3, sheets first through sixth;
(3.L02/15A) is diagram 3, the second sheet, zone 15A.
If designation of a component part, a design designation, etc., is used as the
third part of address designation, then this part shall be recorded with the
corresponding qualifying character.
For example, (3.L6. + 15 : 2) means the second contact is located on place
(position) 15 and is shown in diagram 3, on the sixth sheet.
ХР1 (=A3) means that the given element (the male part ХР1) is to be
connected with device A3.
In address designation, it is allowed to not specify any of its constituent parts.
2.2.16. In address designation, it is allowed to specify the place in the
document, where the picture or description of the given part of object is located. In
this case, the first character recorded inside the brackets shall be letter A separated
from the rest of address designation by dot.
For example, (A.3.L01/15A) means that the given element is located in
diagram 3, on the first sheet, in zone 15A.
