topic: Carbohydrate Counting

Insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio (ICR)

This ratio helps determine how much insulin should be injected

based on carbohydrates consumed.

Note: 1 unit of insulin is used for every 10–15 grams of carbohydrate.

500 ( for Rapid-acting insulin)
‫ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬
Insulin Carbs Ratio (ICR) =
Total Daily Dose of insulin (TDD)

example:

Patient takes Rapid acting insulin if his TDD is 45 units. What is the ICR?

Insulin Carbs Ratio (ICR) = ‫ = ــــــــــــــــــــــــ‬11

500
ICR= 1:11
45 units

means: 1 unit of rapid-acting insulin covered by 11gm of carbohydrate

topic: Carbohydrate Counting

Insulin-to-carbohydrate ratio (ICR)

Insulin-to-Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR) is a guideline that helps people with

diabetes manage their blood sugar levels when eating carbohydrates.

The ICR tells you how many grams of carbohydrates one unit of insulin

can cover or balance.

Understanding ICR: If someone has an ICR of 1:10, this means that 1

unit of insulin will cover 10 grams of carbohydrates. So, if a meal has 30

grams of carbs, they would need about 3 units of insulin (30 ÷ 10 = 3)

Personalized Ratio: The ICR can vary from person to person and may

change based on things like age, activity level, and even time of day.

Doctors help find the right ICR for each person and adjust it over time.
