CHAPTER ONE
1.O INTRODUCTION

1.1 historical background

The directorate of children service Busia is located within Busia county assembly office under
probation office building matayos subcounty children services started operating in 1987 under
the ministry of East African community labor and social protection.
Directorate of children services is mandated by the National council of children under national
government.

The department of children services is headed by the county coordinator. The director rate of
children services Busia county has seven sub-county children offices.

Mission- to provide high quality pharmaceutical services to all clients with the dignity and
professionalism and within the shortest time possible.

Vision- a society where women, men, children and person with disability enjoy equal rights
opportunities and high quality of life.

Mission- to promote, coordinate, mentor and evaluate gender equality women empowerment
social development care and protection of children person with disability and other vulnerable
groups as an integral parts of national development.

1.3 procedures

At the facility there is a person chat flow which help one to understand which office to visit and
what time and in which order.

1.4 source of finance

The facility gets its finance from NGOs , county and the national government .

Directorate of children office Busia has a various means of communication within the facility. It

Staff meeting- this is a hell to pass information to staff and inform them any change within the
facility

Phone calls-the organization make phone calls to staff internally to make inquiries

WhatsApp- group the facility has an active WhatsApp group where all staff are added where
members can talk matters concerning themselves.

The staff makes the client happy and satisfied by offering the services required with a lot of
professionalism.

The policy guided by directorate of children office are made by the government since it is a
government property..

Internally, the staff holds meeting to check on a day policies and make decisions on what is
achievable among themselves and what they can improve on.

ministry of education, registration of birth and death, the judiciary and police to ensure quality
and efficiency of all programs for children affairs in the county.

I concerned that the facility is working in line with the aim and objectives and this and sure full
achievement through saving line and improving livelihood.

The directorate of children office improved gender equality women empowerment development
and protection of children and other vulnerable groups.

I think stayed and served for 3 months I hear by recommend the directorate of children office
Busia as one of its own kind facility offering help services fully to its people.

1.18 conclusion

Directorate of children office busia was a good place to carry out my attachment. The exercise
was easy and I was able to freely interact with personnel from different department who helped
me to learn new ideas.

CHAPTER TWO
2.0 COMMUNITY SURVEY

2.1 Introduction
A community survey is described as a completion of survey questions send out to a filtered target
understand more about particular community. It is an online survey capability that enable
sending a survey to a preselected enrolled audience.

2.2 Area

Directorate of children department office is located at Busia county, Busia town in Matayos sub
county next to Law Court.

2.3 The people in the community

In Busia community, mostly are Luhyas . they are boarded by Teso and Amina Sub county.
Most of the residents mass and others are employed by the government is regardless of their
professions.

2.4 unique Customs of the people

Community have unique customs, the customs includes

Marriage

They marry from other Communities through this there is a bride price paid. Some get married
through religious wedding, traditional wedding while others just marry without considering their
Customs during marriage ceremonies the bride and the Groom must have met and know each
other therefore giving assurance.

Religion

Members of this community are Christians there are different touches such as Catholic,
apostolic, ACK, AIC.

NAMING

In this community naming is done best on The following Seasons.

Children born during Different Seasons bear definite names.

Time children born in morning female are called Akinyi while male okinyi.

Death.

Most death are caused by HIV virus, accident and malaria

2.3 social organization


The community has a common source of water that is the lake. They also lead to the main
activities of fishing thus it’s the major source of income for the members of the society. The
community is composed of different denomination of churches, women groups, youth groups,
schools for learning and healthcare services.

2.4 major occupation of the people

The menu compassion of people in the community, fishing and trade which has created
employment to the people.

There being pieces of land available for farming some families do farming for domestic
purposes while others do farming and sell the surplus.

2.5 people’s achievements

The community have achieved market latrines other achievements such as building of schools
and health centers were supported by the government.

The community collectively has achieved good infrastructure to the school. Which enable them
not to take long or they use while taking the children to school. There are hospitals, police
station and courts, this help the community members not to travel for long distance for their
services.

2.6 Services and institution available


Matayos Community Has School which help in providing learning services to the people of the
area.

Hospitals they provide services to the member of community.

A large number is living with HIV AIDS due to immoral behavior under the Shore of the lake as
fishing is the source of the income men Who go to the Lakeside take some days without coming
home to their families Marrying of the shore leading to spread of HIV AIDS with the help of
institution they are able to be tested and get enrolled to arvs

Market- the market in this community members to get income and provide for their needs daily.
They sell vegetables, fish, tomatoes and other item needed in our daily today activities.

2.7 other social development related services and institution.

The community gets some other social activities for organization and institution which are not
there achievement or government support.

2.8 need and problems

I realized that the community need a well-organized market structure with the market day.
There is need for setting up health facility at the Shore of the Lake to help in reducing HIV cases
and HIV related death. There should be more Adolescent talk so that girls are helped in
community by fighting early pregnancy.

2.9 recommendations

Building market structures and setting ideas market days

Improving on market hygiene

The community should sensitize on HIV AIDS and work or aim towards having a healthy center
at today shore to save livelihood.

2.10 conclusion

The exercise was tiresome as we had to move from one place to another but at the end it
became interesting having interacted with different people who have different belief and cultures
members of Community Shield embrace teamwork which will help them in growing together.

CHAPTER THREE
3.0 PROJECT, WORK AND MANAGEMENT
3.1 USAID MWENDO OVC PROJECT

This project serve over 16,000 orphans and vulnerable children the project name stands for

D- Disadvantaged

O- orphans and the well iun about children


The project was implemented in the Busia County on April 2018 to April 2021 4 years in Busia
West sub-county the project was cooperative agreement of USAID and catholic Relief Services
Maestral international and family aid care and education services.

The project overall goal was to improve the welfare and protection of the children affected by
HIV AIDS.

3.2 joining project through connection from OVC

I joined this project through connection from OVC staff that served me at directorate office of
children where I’m attached.

3.3 aims and objectives

To strengthen the capacity of household and communities .

To protect and care for orphans and well vulnerable children

Eradication of gender-based violence and child protection

To Eradicate the Threat of pregnancy and HIV transmission

T strengthen children welfare under protection structure system for effective response.

3.4 being part of the project

I helped the Office staff to attend health talk with the adolescent who are at school and share
their challenges. Social worker I was able to give emotional support to the girls who had
emotional breakdown. We had fun activities to review our moods.

3.5 when I joined the project

It was active and of many benefits to the community, with the help of community members and
data collection method I manage to identify two girls needed to be part of the project. The
project team is working on the admission process.

3.6 method of data collection

The most commonly used method of collecting data is interviews, questionnaires and
discussion. I used observation method to discuss strategies of water in the area. Through the
discussion I carried out with the other members we discovered that cutting of trees within the
area. As I interviewed members of the area I was able to discover insecurity in the community
has some members were given duty of questionnaire to analyze major problem affecting the
community.

As we visited the community I observed that some children and adolescent girls have dropped
out of school.

3.7 project plan

The project long-term is to build school for offense of vulnerable children within community to
improve on education matters that have been a challenge leading to School Dropout and early
pregnancy.

As a student I learn different way of involving the community

Again kill of data collection method which has helped me in getting information that we need
through involvement in this project.

As I had helped this staff to find out there are people in the society who needs this support I was
able to reach out to some girls who admissions are ongoing and the staff assured me that this
may be achieved.
The community has also been able to participate and this has been making work easier for me as
a social work student.

3.11 problem encountered

Language barriers

Some people in the community more so in the market were not able to speak in English and
Swahili hence meeting its difficult as we needed one to translate leading to omission of the main
points.

Illiteracy level

This made it hard for some to read and interpret the questionnaire

Weather

Sometime it rained interfering with field activities

Lack of funds

The project of time lacks funds to support its member and project team leading to low
achievement.
3.12 recommendation

I recommend the community to give through data to the project team during their fieldwork
activities.

The donors should check on I don’t mean s of getting income to support the project.

3.13 disengagement

As a student was involved in the project I have left the project having achieved My academic
goals . The stuff are already to embark on their duties and work towards goals and objectives
achievement.

3.14 conclusion

The exercise was fun and engaging, it required me to fully participate and follow my mentors
steps I learned how project are important at large
CHAPTER 4

4.1 GROUP WORK AND MANAGEMENT


Social group work is a method of social work which develops the ability of individual through
group activities.

This is assigned joined a group that helped me in learning how people cope in the community by
taking different activities resulting to visiable step made.

4.2 Day star group.

I joined this group through one of the community help volunteor who was helping in community
survey which is the secretary of the group. I was assigned duty of assistant secretary where I
helped the secretary in taking minutes during the meeting.

Daystar group was formed in 8th July 2006 when the woman in matayos community came
together and discuss among themselves how they can raise money as women to help in
developing of their homes.

Initially it was our women group at the start which eight members the letter so it wise to add men
as they had shown interesting to omission of women in the group initial name Day star women
group today Day star group.

The name they started was brought by one of the members during the first meeting when she said
that they want their group to achieve to shine like stars.

4.3 Data collection.

The common method of data collection use in this group is observation and group discussion.
The community people briefly give information on the group achievement that make them want
to join through the group leaders Incisted that the members are okay as at now and they do not
allow any other admission.
4.4 Aim and objectives.

To eradicate poverty in the media and community and provide food.

To provide financial flow for women and men.

To help the orphans and vulnerable children to get education.

To ensure hygiene is maintained in the community.

4.5 Group activities.

When the group was formed they only used to do table banking ask the members explain to me.
3 months later they leased aland and planted cassava which they sold to school and market.

This raised money to the group they did this together with table banking and raised money which
later used to buy chairs as at now the group as chairs which can be hired by others people but for
the group members they are given for free as their achievement. They also support building
projects for the aged in the community.

They have helped improved housing system in the community.

4.7 Student lnvolvement.

I was introduced to the group by the community helped volunteer who was helping in the
community survey was the group Secretary and when I joined I was assigned the task of assistant
secretary because assistant secretary was going away for sometime.

4.8 Plan Of The Group.

The group is planning to purchase tent and allow those who can hire to earn the income.

They are also planning to purchase more chairs I suggested the group to start chicken farming act
the area chief was calling to give them a piece of land for development activities.
4.9 Implementation Process.

For the group to the achieve the good there was delete the stop but today teach, all members
must attend group meeting any member who gets absent without apology they are fine of 100
shillings where as those absent with apology fine of 50.

All members to give 50 shillings for table banking 20 to 100 social share.

4.10 achievements.

As a student I achieved skills of table banking and how one can strictly raise funds. I also learn
that orphans and vulnerable also valued and need also to be supported. The group members
agreed with me on the plan of supporting the special school and they promised me that they will
have to support them with the profit they get.

4.11 Recommendation.

I recommended the group to find donors who can help in supporting their group program.

The group should also find a way of doing their bank transaction without traveling to the bank
even time they want to deposit or withdraw cash.

The group should look forward to work with young adoleseent mothers in giving them
education.

4.12 Conclusion.

The entire activity was fun ever though of time it became tiresome when members are not
cooperative and patient to listen.
CHAPTER 5

SOCIAL CASES WALK AND MANAGEMENT

Introduction

Social cases is a method used by certain welfare agencies to help in individual to cope with client
problem. It is used by social workers to give direct services to individuals and families affected
by the problem.

5.1.4 the teacher of the school realized a problem, the reported the case to the nearest community
help volunteer in Beverly and brought child to hospital.

5.1.5 presented problem

The client stated that his uncle this engaging her into amaze plantation and slept with a full stop
the uncle later threatened if she tell anyone about this.

5.1.6 Case History

The client stayed with her mother in Matayos Village the father is a fisherman who spend most
of his time at the lake, he only come home at 9:00 p.m. and leave at 5:00 a.m. the client is a
particular of and therefore he stays mostly alone at home when she doesn’t go to school as the
grandmother is a business lady. On a Saturday evening the drunken ankle came home only to
find the uncle shouted at her go and get the sheep from the maize plantation as she was going the
uncle dragged her tore has cut and hard sex with her. The uncle letter threatened her not to share
with anyone or else he will kill her. This brought in memories of her late mom who was killed by
the thieves on Her way from the market. The grandmother did not realize anything as the client
had bathed and change the clothes as she was instructed to do by the uncle. On a Monday
morning at school the teacher realized a change in the mood of the client as she was known to be
jovial and active pupil the teacher having known her background only to see tears.

They called CHU who was always close to the client the client had a talk with CHU as the
company each other to the facility.

5.1.7 TREATMENT PLAN

The client was taken to the health facility to check up and treatment the client was rescued from
hard temperature for a while as we realize with the help of The adherence counselor old back to
the client had hallucination.

5.1.8 PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS

The client was examined at the acceptance the doctor gave her living that the client had been
defined.

They later advised the chu to report the case the police even though the crime scene had been
cleared.

5.1.9 ACHIEVEMENT
The client was treated and left better, the father was advised to keep watch on her daughter with
the numerous hallucinations the client had she was preferred to see psychologist in Busia referral
hospital

5.1.0 PROBLEM AND ENCOUNTERED

The client father came drunk and so did not give sober ideas or making clear decisions.

5.1.11 DISENGAGEMENT

The client was offered temporary shelter by The CHU paid as she continued to get psychological
support from psychologist.

Status of the client by the time of leaving

The client was able to talk clearly and explain what happened as he was assured safety

5.1.12 RECOMMENDATION

The gland should have confidence and report anything that is going on her life they CHU should
be close to the client and offer motherly love.

5.1.13 CONCLUSION
As a social worker I failed that the case was well-handed and we should create awareness to girls
to understand the lives and all that they need I was able to provide the guidance and counseling
to client.

The client was brought to the facility by peer educator who have been following tracing him
since he stopped visiting with the facility to refill and clinic.

The problem presented was poor adherence which led to high viral load of the client

5.2.5 case history

The client is HIV positive patient and tested positive a year ago but seem to be still living in
denial. The client was brought to the facility by appear educator who have been tracing in as
efficient man who spend most of his time at the lake.

5.2.6 treatment plan

After the client problem was made known to me with the help of various counselors and HIV
testing service provider we are company the clients to The laboratory for a viral load test as we
can current him to keep taking his drugs daily the peer educated team was to visit the client at the
end of every month to ensure safety the client and that he’s taking his drugs.

5.2.8 achievement
I learned how to offer psychological support to client living under denials of their situation

5.2.9 problem encountered

The client was through associating with good companies and so he did have even next to kini or
someone to be contacted in case he was not reachable this medit hard to get him at times.

5.2.10 disengagement

I left the client in the hands of the adherence counselor who was to keep advising the client and
the peer educator who were to pay visit to him.

5.2.11 recommendations

People living with HIV and AIDS should be given first priority the facility peer educator should
address their home and have their next of kin.

5.2.12 conclusion

The client promised not to miss taking the drugs and promised to keep time. He was happy that
he got served better and learned a lot.

5.3 Case Three


5.3.1 nature of the case

5.3.3 engagement

I learned about this client during the community survey work when I visited the home and found
the lander with loris and swelling around her neck and wrist.

5.2.4 presented problem

The client was being beaten by her husband.

5.3.5 Case s history


Client A, 27 years old woman married to a client living in Matayos Village has been
experiencing this problem for the past 3 months the husband is a drunkard wu-turn violent
whenever he drinks the client has not visited any health center due to fear that his husband may
be arrested and she may not be able to provide for the children.

5.3.6 real problem

Drug abuse

5.3.7 treatment plan

I together with my supervisor we are device the client to visit the health facility for treatment we
also plan with The adherence counselor to visit the home and provide guidance and canceling to
the husband while sober .

5.3.8 problem solving process

The client come to the possible and was treated 3 days later there adherence counselor visited
their home and failed to the couple importance of good health and Peace.

5.3.9 achievement

The husband learned from this mistake and promise not to beat his wife again.
The client got relief from living in fear and battling depression connected to the client to dreams
program which was to provide capital for the clients to open up one business.

5.3.10 problem faced

The client did not want to expose her husband details with fear of him being arrested at first the
husband was violent and did not want to listen but later greed and he was able to talk .

5.3.11 disengagement

While I was coming back to school I left the client in the hand of peer educator who were
assigning if he could be any form of violence among the couple

5.3.12 recommendation

Couple should learn to understand and respect each other

They should leave peacefully and protect their children

5.3.13 conclusion

The exercise was good and so educative I learned challenges women go through and hope that
one day women will have a voice to come out of their Lord situation.
CHAPTER 6
6.0 ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

6.1 Introduction

The organization is being run by the government of Kenya, development partners and mean Time
donars, donors always support the organization by offering free food and clothings to the
children in the organization.

6.2 nature of income generating activities

The organization engaged in an income generating project which was the water project. This was
to enable the community members to have an access to clean and safe drinking water which
helped in the satisfaction of human wants and also basic needs. The water project enable them to
be healthy because it was clean and good for drinking.

6.3 aims and objectives

To improve their living standards

To create job opportunities

To improve on farming system in the community

To improve on teamwork spirit among the community.

6.4 support given by the agency

The members of the group looked for support from the county government local authorities and
evil from the local government because the project was to support or solve the problem of water
shortage in the community.

6.5 management of entrepreneurial of activities

The money given out by the government and local authorities were used to perform different
activities such as purchasing more pipes, taps and even water purifier.
6.6 monitoring of the activities

The project team manager choose few people considering gender ie male and female who had
the idea on how to work should be done and who dedicated themselves in monitoring the where
about of the ongoing project.

6.7 problem encountered

Being a water project, some problems were encountered

The land was so dry because of long-term drought hence making drilling of the well difficult

Insufficient fund among the community members

Lack of close contact between the donor and community members

Language barriers

The organization has many plans in the future

To make water available in every community


To identify and appoint competent and committed clients to the top position

Lack of top management supports towards the ongoing project

6.9 conclusion

As a social worker, I recommend and concluded the following

They should encourage teamwork among themselves

They should advocate for Peace and unity

They should seek more skills and knowledge from experts for perfection.

Chapter 7

7.0 CAPACITY BUILDING AND EMPOWERMENT


7.1 INTRODUCTION

It is a measurable improvement in an organization ability to fulfill its mission through a blend of


sound management.
The agency empowers community members by coming up with several activities that will enable
them to recruit and mental new leaders and provide opportunities for connections.

7.2 aims and objectives

To improve skills for carrying out key functions

To improve on a teamworking spirit among the team members.

To solve problem that may occur in the organization.

7.3 implementation and evaluation

Implementation is the process of putting things into action. The organization had different steps
and approaches that is followed to ensure the successful completion of the project and they
include the following:

Engaged different stakeholders who at some point funded the project

The managers who were appointed by the community members assured the project and its
activities

Members were able to implement and evaluate all the activities that were to be done for
completion of project.
7.4 recommendation

I will recommend that even though record keeping is good and strong document helps in future
reference. The project manager and their members should encourage storing data in a soft copy
to encourage the use of electronic device is to eradicate the issues of illiteracy among
themselves.

7.8 conclusion

The people of that area were enjoying the fruit of their labor in that there was enough clean and
drinking water for domestic use. They in formed a group in which discussion about the project
was carried out and by the time of living many members had joined the group.
