FEAR

FEAR.
When you were a child and you did something bad your first feeling was being afraid of your
parents. The fear of being punished made you not do bad things and taught you from wrong and
right. A child who does not receive punishment from their parents has bad behaviour problems and
has no sense of right from wrong.
Fear of God. Religion tells people that if they do bad things they will go to hell; many people
won't do anything wrong because they believe they are watched by God all of the
time.
Fear of going to Many people won't commit a crime because they are afraid of being sent to jail
jail. and only in a very desperate situation will people commit crime or if they think
they can out smart the police.
Fear of another If a person is much bigger than you then you are more likely to give that person
person. more respect because of the fear of being hurt by this person.
Fear of society. People don't like to be different from the majority of a society because of being
outcast. If most people are not wearing shoes then the rest would choose not to
wear shoes as well.
Fear of death. People's biggest fear is death and people will do anything to stay alive, if people
were given a choice to kill another person to save their own life they most likely
kill the other person.
Free will is to do whatever you want to do when you feel like doing it and saying whatever you want
to say. But if we did not fear anything from death, government and even other people how will this
effect society? In your group give your opinion if fear is what makes us good people or only good
people fear and bad people don't fear at all despite how severe the punishment is?

PROS AND CONS

Open class discussion for students to speak freely.

The town you live in has decided to build a new casino.
The pros. The cons.
Building a casino will create a lot of jobs for the People who gamble a lot will lose a lot of
town. money and create problems with their families.

Casino brings in tourism which leads to more However more tourists also means prostitution
money and jobs. and drugs.
The discussion is should the town build a casino and make the money or will it create too many
other problems?

DISCIPLINE OR ABUSE
This is a topic for open discussion about real situations in life.
New words to learn; "Spanking," "punching," "abuse," and "child abuse." Spanking is when a child
is very naughty and you want to punish him by slapping his bottom. Child abuse is when a parent
does horrible things to a child such as punching which is closing your fist and striking the child's
face or body.
A woman was walking down the street with her child and the child started to be naughty so she
gave him a spank on the bottom. While this was happening another woman witnessed this and
called the police to arrest the mother for child abuse.
The topic is: Is spanking a child for being naughty child abuse? If it is child abuse then how should
the mother punish the child?
Some parents who don't believe in spanking or hitting say they reason with the child but can you
reason with a two year old child?
The people who I know whose parents never spanked them were spoilt little brats who were out of
control and my father would take off his belt whenever I was bad. The other children who were
never spanked had serious drug problems but I never did. Is this because I was spanked and they
weren't or would there be another reason for their drug problem?
Immunization is when you give children medicine to stop them from getting terrible diseases but it
is with a needle in the arm.
Some parents are now saying that their children should not be given any immunization because
the needle hurts them. When they were asked about what would happen if they were to catch the
disease, they responded by saying "those diseases don't exist anymore."
Are these parent right and what is your opinion?

GENDER ROLES

Gender roles means that men and women have different duties at work and around the house
such as men take care of the back yard while women wash the clothes.
Equal rights means that women have the same rights as men such as they should be able to do
the same job and get paid the same amount.

Do you believe on a date a boy should pay for dinner, movie and taxi?
One reason is that for a boy to show how much he likes a girl is how much he is willing to spend on
a date.
If you believe that boys should pay then what other reasons why you think this?
OR
Do you believe both girl and boy should pay half for everything?
One reason is that girls and boys are equal so they should half the cost of everything.
If you believe that both boy and girl should pay equally then what other reasons why you think this?
Do you believe when a married couple both have jobs the wife should still do most of the house
work?
One reason is that a wife's duty is maintaining a house even though she is working a job as well.
If you believe that the wife should do all the house work then what other reasons why you think
this?
OR
Do you believe if both husband and wife have jobs then both should equally do the house work?
One reason is that both husband and wife are busy working jobs they should help each other
around the house.
If you believe that both should help each other around the house then what other reasons why you
think this?
Do you believe when a married couple have a new born baby and it's crying in the middle of the
night both parents should wake up and see what's wrong?
One reason is that because they are both working they need as much sleep as possible.
If you believe that the both parents should get up then what other reasons why you think this?
OR
Do you believe when the baby cries in the middle of the night only the mother should wake up and
see what is wrong?
One reason is that it is the mother's responsibility to look after the children.
If you believe that only the mother should wake up then what other reasons why you think this?
Do you believe if a man and a woman are both working in a factory but the men have to lift heavier
objects they should be paid equally?
One reason is that even though the men are lifting heavier objects the women still do hard work.
If you believe that they should be paid equally what other reasons why you think this?
OR
Do you believe because the men are required to lift heavier objects they should be paid more?
One reason is that the heavier object can cause damage to the body so they should be paid more
for that.
If you believe that the men should be paid more what other reasons why you think this?

Some men don't want to be married to a women if she earns more than he does and doesn't want
to marry someone older.
Some women don't want to marry a man if he is shorter than she is and younger.
Even though women are treated equally and do the same work as men but why do some things
have not changed such as age and money?

group 1
Scenario The teacher is your father/mother who is one of the world's richest people but is so sick.
He/she is going to die very soon. He is lying on his/her bed. You are his/her child and
he/she will announce his/her will to you. This will be his/her final farewell to you and you
will find out how much money he/she will leave you.
Student you and your father/mother are very close and in fact his/her favourite child. You don't
1: care about the money you will be given when he/she dies because you don't want
him/her to die. You will cry a lot and say to him/her that you don't want him/her to die.
Student you and your father/mother have never got along and have quarreled many times.
2: He/she has always criticized on your shortcomings, example he/she has always told
you that you'll never achieve anything in your life. You can't wait till he/she dies but
inside of you is quite sad and regretful.
Student you are the youngest of the children and all your life you have spent it far away from
3: your father. You've gone to schools where you have lived and when you were home
he/she was too busy to spend time with you. So you really don't know him/her and you
are more concerned of how much money he/she will give you. You are not really sad
and you're feeling nothing.
group 2
Scenario Your mother will inform you that she is pregnant, but you are a very poor family and how
you will be able to afford another child is a serious matter. Though another brother or
sister can bring a lot of joy in your sad world.
Student The news of another child in the family is wonderful, you are the eldest and you'd be
1: happy to raise this child. You have a job and be happy to help this child grow up as if it
is your own.
Student You are the second eldest and your main concern is whether it is a boy or a girl. A boy
2: can help build a better house or can get a job when he is a bit older and help the family.
If it is going to be a girl she won't be able to help the family.
Student Whether the new child is a girl or a boy, this means you won't be able to go to university.
3: The money the family has saved will now be spent on the new child and your dreams
will be shattered. It also means that your family won't benefit when you graduate and
when you'll get a good job.
group 3
Scenario You are an exploration crew on the planet Mars. The teacher is the leader who will bring
bad news that you'll be stranded on the planet indefinitely.
Student This was the risk you knew you were taking while being trained for this. You believe
1: there are ways to survive, example only eat a little bit of the food and water. You will
suggest ways to grow food and to produce water and oxygen.
Student It is no point trying to stay alive just for a little while and then die. So you believe you
2: should just take the drug which will kill you quickly and painlessly.
Student You are actually the robot who will survive but you are afraid of being all alone on this
3: planet. You are able to act and feel like a human being but you won't die like the others.
Your only fear is being left alone on the planet because everyone will eventually die.
group 4
Scenario The teacher is a person who suffers from a mental illness, he/she sees people who are
not real. You are the people who he/she sees and you only exist in his/her mind. So if
he/she takes the medicine to cure him/her, you will die.
Student You must convince him/her that you are real and he/she doesn't need to take the
1: medicine. Tell him/her that if he/she takes the medicine when he/she doesn't need to
then he/she will become sick.
Student You will say to him/her whether you are real or not, that you are his/her best friend . You
2: have been there for him all his/her life and has helped him/her to get out of trouble.
Taking the medicine may cure him/her but he/she will be lonely.
Student You are the evil one of the three, you want him to kill people and do as much evil as
3: possible. Say to him if he/she takes the medicine it will only kill the other two not you.
group 5
Scenario The teacher has been in a terrible car accident and his whole body has been crippled.
Doctors and scientists have created him a new robotic body as he moves just like a
robot.
Student You are the inventor of the robotic body and you will control him with a remote control.
1: You will show his family how it works and say he is just the same as he was before.
Student You are the teacher's wife, even though he is alive you think this is a monster. You
2: cannot bear to look at your husband and believe he should have died. Seeing him as a
monster has made you not love him anymore.
Student You are the teacher's child, unlike your mother you think your father's new robotic body
3: is fantastic. You will try to tell your mother that your father will be so much better as he

Scenario You are a music band who just became famous all over the world. Everybody will know
who you are, your faces are going to be on T-shirts and girls/boys are going to be in-
loved with you.
Student 1 You can't believe how lucky you are and how rich and famous you are going to be.
Because you are the singer of the band, you are going to be more famous than the
others.
Student 2 You are not that happy about this because your privacy will be taken away from you.
Photographers are going to try to take pictures while you are at home and they won't let
you keep your privacy.
Student 3 Because you play the drums, you won't be as known as the singer so you can still have
some privacy and yet enjoy the money you are going to make.
Teacher You are the host of a music television show and you are interviewing the band on what
it is like to be famous all of a sudden.
Group 9
Scenario There is nothing more devastating then losing your legs. One of you has been in a
terrible car accident and the doctor has just cut your legs off. You are a group of friends
giving the student support during this hard time.
Student 1 You have just woken up and to your surprise, your legs are missing. You ask your
friends and the doctor what has happened as you can't remember the accident.
Student 2 You explain to him/her that he/she has been in a car accident and her/his legs were
crushed so badly that they had to be cut off. You try to tell him/her that their life is not
over and he/she can still do many things with their life.
Student 3 You don't know how to be brave in this situation and you cry saying that it is all your
fault because you were driving the car.
Teacher You are the doctor who had to amputate the first student's legs due to the fact that the
car had crushed them. You advise him/her on how to get on in life with a wheel chair
and despite of not being able to walk, she/he can still have a good life.
Group 10
Scenario Because people want to be beautiful, they have surgery done to their faces to try to be
more attractive. Because this procedure is very expensive, the first student has gone to
a very cheap doctor and is not very good.
Student 1 You want to be beautiful but without paying so much money. Because the doctor is bad,
your face now became uglier.
Student 2 You told him/her not to have surgery because you never had trusted the doctor. You try
to give some comfort to the first student even though he/she is even uglier.
Student 3 You are the nurse and you will lie to him/her by saying that it is not that bad as they
think it is. Though, the doctor has done this many times and has always made bad
mistakes to people's faces.
Teacher You are the doctor and yet again you have totally screwed up someone's face so you
will try to convince them that they are not ugly at all. You say to them that in a few days,
it will get better but that is a lie.
