The amounts shown are the net monthly* salaries, i.e. after deductions for internal tax, social security and pension, for staff in the first step in each grade per country of work in 2024.
Allowances such as expatriation and family allowances may be added to these amounts, depending upon personal circumstances. Entitlement to these allowances is evaluated at the time of recruitment and on an annual
basis thereafter, to take into account evolving personal circumstances.
ESA salaries are exempt from national income tax and are normally adjusted once a year, taking inputs such as cost of living into account.
Where an ESA vacancy is published with the mention of a single grade, recruitment will in principle take place at this grade.
However, most ESA vacancies are published in the A2-A4 grade band (which also incorporates A1), giving ESA the possibility to offer a grade commensurate with the professional experience of the selected candidate
according to the following guidelines:
• A1: less than 4 years of experience**
• A2: 4-14 years of experience**
• A3: 15+ years of experience**
• A4: senior or managerial positions (often published at A4 grade level only)**
*ESA staff receive 12 months’ salary per calendar year.
**Years of relevant experience are counted as those following the completion of a master’s degree. Note that the completion of a PhD may also count towards the number
of years of experience.
